If we could give ten stars, we would! This is hands down the best B&B we have ever stayed at. The house itself is stunning—beautifully designed, thoughtfully decorated, and impeccably maintained. Every detail has been considered, making it feel both luxurious and welcoming.The hosts are exceptional—attentive without being intrusive, genuinely thoughtful, and always ready to help with anything you might need. Their warmth and care made us feel more like treasured guests than just visitors.We will never stay anywhere else when visiting Chicago. This place has completely set the standard for what a B&B should be. Highly, highly recommended!

The best ever!

We have stayed in vacation rentals all over the world and John was simply the best host ever. He's an interior designer so the spacious apartment was spectacular in every way. Comfy beds, gorgeous lights on dimmers, 3 types of coffee makers, luxurious towels and furnishings, a super relaxing, secluded backyard, free parking and everything you could possibly need. If something went wrong, he was on it immediately. And so many extra touches - a bottle of wine, fully stocked kitchen, free tickets to a comedy club, even a welcome sign with our names. The location was perfect - away from the frenzy of downtown, but on an elegant, tree-lined street, walking distance to beach and restaurants; Whole Foods and vintage shops, and a short drive to city center and just about everywhere. We did have one issue that was completely out of his control and he was heroic in resolving it. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. If you are lucky enough to find this home available -- grab it! We, for sure, will be back!

Clean and Convenient!!

We stayed at John’s property for five nights at the end of June and I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a nicer rental property. Everything was extremely clean and top quality from the amenities in the bathroom to the comfort of the beds. As with most Chicago apartments, there was only one bathroom, but it was so nice that we didn’t care! There are three bedrooms with very comfortable queen size beds, two large screen TVs and a well stocked game cabinet. In addition, after our host heard about the mess up with our plane flights, causing us to arrive later than planned, not only didn’t he mind but he took requests for what we’d like to eat and drink when we got there. That was so above and beyond and very much appreciated. After traveling way longer than we anticipated, it was so nice to come to a place as comfortable as home. I have zero complaints about this beautiful rental property in an extremely convenient neighborhood of Edgewater (and if you know you know, it’s very hard to find anything in Edgewater). We will be back!

Far Exceeded Expectations

Greatest place ever!!! I’m sorry to write this, because it would be better for me to keep this rental for myself ; ) This place was as luxurious and comfortable as what you see in the photos, and then some. Every detail of the decor was impeccable and spotlessly clean. Really clean. Our hosts provided tons of pillows, towels, dishes, cookware, etc. The linens were much softer than hotels provide, and blankets and duvets were warm and cozy, and not at all flimsy. The beds are very comfortable. We had the whole floor to ourselves, and it is big. Obviously, no expense was spared with artworks, lighting, and living and dining furniture. The radiators were quiet, and it wasn’t cold in spite of the weather outside. The water pressure was great, and the tub, showerhead, and fixtures were all top-notch. We had access to laundry machines. The TVs had Xfinity, and the Wi-Fi was reliable. It was truly our home away from home! Our hosts live in another part of the building. They were fantastic!!! They were friendly and eager to make our stay as comfortable as possible, without ever seeming intrusive. Thanks to them, our visit in Chicago was low stress! They have 3 beautiful large dogs, so it’s best if you don’t mind that. Also, it’s on the second floor, so you have to be able to manage the stairs. The weather wasn’t warm enough to enjoy the yard and patio, but it certainly contributed to the feeling of luxury. I can’t imagine any better place to stay in North Chicago. A zillion stars!!!

Perfect Thanksgiving Home Away From Home

With my condo under renovation just a few blocks away, my siblings from LA and DC and I (5 adults total) rented John's unit to celebrate Thanksgiving together. It was perfect! The large dining room and living room provided great spaces for us to spend time together, and the front and rear nooks provided areas for us to have our own space when needed. The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking meals of all sizes, including a Thanksgiving feast! The bedrooms are well-designed to maximize the space. John was a great host and super responsive. Highly recommend!

Staying in Chicago in style

Beautiful location, loved the neighborhood. The pictures of the apartment don't do it justice...it's what you see and so much more. The hosts were absolutely fabulous, I'm sorry I didn't get to see them more. I want to go back for sure! It's a gem...and what to say about Chicago...one of the most beautiful cities I've visited. Would do it again in a heartbeat! Thank You!!!

A Great Chicago Stay in Edgewater

If you are looking for an immaculately clean, quiet accommodation with comfortable beds, and tastefully decorated, this is the place for you. John oriented us to the house and great restaurants in the area. We plan to return for a longer visit. John was a great host, attentive and quickly answered all our questions.

Best VRBO stay ever

I couldn't say enough good things about this property and owners. They thought of EVERYTHING to make your stay more comfortable and easy. I stayed with my two boys and they both raved about it too. Such a better choice than a hotel and convenient to where we wanted to be. Thank you John!! Can't wait to come back.

John Gray's Edgewater - Cool, calm, collected.

The four adults who lived at John's (4 nights) were all very happy w/ our choice. John is a gracious host who has fitted the apt. out in pleasing manner. The beds were very comfortable as was the furniture. Great neighborhood to walk in w/ public transport close by. Another review mentioned a squeaky floorboard? Hmmm - charming sound of beautiful old wood floors to me! All of us would give both John and this apartment a gold star rating.

Best Chicago Weekend!

We were 5 college gal pals in town for marathon and almost 50th bdays. Earlier reviews say it all; John is the BEST❤️You will leave Chicago with a new friend! Prepare to love the pretty street, luxe feel, tasteful designer furnishings, closeness to train...winner, winner, chicken dinner. Drink at Stone Fox, eat at Uncommon Ground and Tweet. If you are the person booking, claim the middle bedroom! Bed is amazing. We kept it secret from other gals😜

Cool Clean and Comfortable

John has thought of everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. Fresh Flowers and a bottle of wine welcomed us. Hooks on the bedroom and closet doors kept the bathroom clear of towels. Plenty of hangers and drawers made unpacking easy. The property was very comfortable for two couples and hanging out with our daughter who lives in the neighborhood.

Excellent Home, Excellent Host!

This was the perfect home for our family's recent trip to Chicago to celebrate our son's college graduation. This home was in a wonderful location--there were several restaurants, etc within walking distance. Downtown was a short car ride away, as were several other Chicago neighborhoods that were fun to explore. The home was wonderful! Everything was beautifully decorated and and well stocked with just about anything we would have needed to make our stay as convenient as being in our own home. The beds were very comfortable. The entire property was spotless. It was apparent that John, the owner, took great care to provide a wonderful experience for his guests. The home itself tells only part of the story of this fantastic property--John, the owner, was so welcoming and accommodating. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with fresh flowers and a bottle of wine. John took the time to come and personally welcome us to Chicago. He spent time showing us around the unit and gave us information regarding the surrounding neighborhood, giving us great restaurant recommendations, etc. He texted each day to see how things were going and if we needed anything or had any questions. There were six of us staying in the home and we were all impressed with every aspect of our stay and enjoyed meeting John and getting to know him. We will definitely stay here again, during our next Chicago visit!

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property in Edgewater. The unit was very well taken care of and clean! My wife and I are both fitness junkies and it was great that there were many cross fit gyms very close by as well as a LA Fitness just down the street. Our host John was incredible and contacted us every day to make sure we didn't need anything. He also recommended some incredible restaurants such as: "lady gregory's" in Andersonville which was AWESOME! I will definitely recommend this property to my friends/family and next time I'm in the area this is where I'll be staying.

The best VRBO stay we have ever had. The most caring hospitality and attentive hosts.

This was an amazing stay. The apartment is beautiful. The hosts are the best we have ever had. John Gray has been attentive and caring. Friendly and with great sense of humor. We were worried about parking but it turned out to be no problem at all. Street parking was always available. This would be a place we would come back to. We don’t have even the smallest complaint.

Beautiful Clean Comfortable Urban Retreat

Our host made sure we were greeted upon arrival and anything we requested was delivered quickly. We felt safe walking to Aldi, CVS, and the local diner in the upscale neighborhood. The first floor apartment is up a short flight of stairs. We enjoyed the beautifully decorated and comfortable living room and dining room. We had everything we needed to cook breakfast and make snacks and light meals in the very modern kitchen. The bathroom was stocked with hair dryer and any toiletries we forgot. Our beds were very comfortable. The bed in the master bedroom had electronic controls to raise the head or foot. The entire place was spotless. We stay in the area often when we visit our daughter and are very happy to have found this urban retreat for an excellent value.

Beautiful Stay

We had a fantastic long weekend. The place was immaculate and had all of the amenities of a home away from home. Comfortable and cozy and the right amount of distance from the downtown area. John is over the top gracious and friendly; always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. He directed us to eating, entertainment and more. Having never rented a vrbo in the past, I can’t compare to any other experiences. I will say that the bar is set extremely high now. We look forward to a return trip!

Perfect stay for marathión runners

We were three marathon runners from Europe. John welcomed us very warmly and looked after us perfectly. The apartment is very tastefully decorated, the kitchen very well-equipped, the whole apartment very comfortable. There are food shops and restaurants in the area. It is just one mile away from the lake side with a sand beach. We had a great time - Thank you, John!

Outstanding--it was better than we had hoped for.

Our host was flexible about checking us in and out plus lots of goodies and willingness to help. We used the bus and train with only needing an occasional lift ride. The neighborhood was quiet, beautiful, and walking distance to coffee and the lake. Our family was going all different directions and it provided a great place to rest and recharge. Thanks for the best visit to Chicago yet!!!!

Wonderful apartment, great location

Came with 2 other couples.... what a beautiful place to stay, with everything we could possibly have needed. Very easy to work with John... we were met when we arrived in town... place is just gorgeous! Walked to some local places... felt very safe in the area.... and a short Uber/Lyft ride anywhere else. Would definitely stay again!!

I am awn established interior designer in Chicago and owner of Campbell Gray Design. I started hosting in 2016 as a trial and fell in love with it. I treat my guests the way I would want to be treated if I were traveling and they were hosting.
I like our guests to feel wanted, anticipated and comfortable.. I like not be accessible and available for questions and recommendations of places to eat and things to do....
I love doing it so much I am turning our second floor into another rental. We live on the 3rd floor so were close to meet and greet our guest and should they need anything just text or call.
