We stayed in the 4 bedroom lodge in early August. Nothing
Do you remember when you were a kid in the summer, and your mom gave you some breakfast, handed you a sandwich for lunch, and told you to play outside until dinner? If you have kids from age 8 to 18 or so, you can totally pull that off here. Just acres and acres of wilderness and creeks to explore. The area just downriver from the cabins has very little undergrowth, just a lot of pine needles and leaves, and served as the 40 acre or so play area for our kids.
The three cabins sit on a hill about 30 yards from the river down a steepish hill. The river is dammed up there with a nice 8 foot waterfall on each side of an extremely refreshing swimming hole. The water is very cool.
There is another 20 foot waterfall about 100 yards downriver. Neat place to hang out for a picnic.
The rest of the stream is mostly small falls and ankle deep pools. Fun to explore, and very pretty land.
About the 4 bedroom lodge:
1) The kitchen is small, but very well equipped. Lots of pots / pans / coffee / spices, etc. If you get warm, don't miss the exhaust fan above the sink. Behind that cast iron door is a great fan to keep the kitchen cooler.
2) The main room is very spacious, and comfortably holds 8 people to hang out, eat, play games, etc.
3) Only one bathroom, so you have to plan ahead for showers with 8 people. However, two bedrooms have a sink for brushing teeth / etc.
4) The porch is lovely. While my kids were off in the woods, I spent almost all my time on that porch reading, relaxing, and listening to the waterfall below.
5) The bed linens were clean, fresh, high quality, great wool blankets to keep warm, lots of towels for the shower and the river.
Finally, staff / owner were fantastic. Helpful, friendly, cheerful.
Overall, this place was excellent for us. When we booked, we had planned to go into Milford to explore; it's a short hop, less than a 10 minute drive, so this would be a good base for a weekend exploring Milford. But, we fell in love with the property, we wound up hiking and playing in the brook all day during our 5 day trip. If you have a relatively outdoorsy family that likes to hike / explore / swim, this place is amazing.
One very small negative: a lot of trees are still down in the stream due to the big winter storm. It didn't really hinder any activities or access to any of the property, but the place likely will look better after those trees are gone.
