The San Juan Backcountry Lodge is an off-grid mountain retreat designed for guests who value access to the backcountry, privacy, and amazing views. Set deep in the San Juan Mountains near Silverton on Kendall Mountain, this lodge offers ski-in/ski-out backcountry access in winter and direct 4WD access to the Alpine Loop in summer and fall.

This is not a “remote-feeling” Lodge—it is truly off grid, intentionally secluded, and engineered for serious mountain use. The property itself is 10 acres, however the vast majority of the land around us is public BLM land, so you can wander at will. The nearest house is over a mile away.

Access & Seasonal Requirements (Please Read Carefully)

Summer & Fall:
High-clearance 4WD is required to access the property.
Winter:
Access is by snowmobile, backcountry skis, tracked vehicle, or helicopter only.
Because the access road crosses avalanche paths, San Juan County requires winter guests to be guided to the lodge by a qualified backcountry guide.
Mud Season:
The lodge is not accessible in May.

This property is best suited for guests experienced with mountain travel and remote environments.

Important Notes

* This is a **remote, off-grid property**. Guests should be prepared for mountain conditions, rapidly changing weather, and limited emergency access.
* Wildlife is present in the area.
* Winter access requires coordination with a qualified backcountry guide as required by the county.

*The lodge will open June 1st. This is the third backcountry vacation rental that the owners/operators/builders Adam and Spencer Rex are completing. The others are escalantecliffhouse.com and Birchcreekhouse.com. We have always opened on time and will do so again.

*UTV ACCESS TO THE ALPINE LOOP: Access to the Alpine Loop from the lodge requires guests to drive through the outskirts of Silverton, but through Silverton city limits for about 1/4 mile. If you get caught driving a UTV through Silverton, it's a $300 fine. To be perfectly legal you'd have to trailer your UTV through town and unload it on the other side. It's not possible to leave from anywhere in Silverton in a UTV and access the Alpine Loop without the risk of a $300 ticket.

We’re Adam and Spencer—brothers, business partners, and lifelong outdoor enthusiasts. We build and operate vacation homes in places we genuinely love exploring: remote, beautiful landscapes that reward a sense of adventure and self-sufficiency.

Our properties are designed as true basecamps for exploration—whether that means backcountry skiing, off-roading, hiking, hunting, or simply unplugging and enjoying wide-open space and incredible views. We focus on durable construction, thoughtful layouts, and reliable systems so guests can be comfortable while being far from crowds and distractions.

We’re hands-on owners who know our properties inside and out, and we’re happy to share local knowledge, access tips, and planning guidance to help you get the most out of your stay. At the same time, we respect our guests’ independence and privacy—once you arrive, the space is yours to enjoy.

Our goal is to provide a luxury experience that supports adventure, connection, and unforgettable experiences in the outdoors.

The San Juan Backcountry Lodge is currently under construction and is owned by Spencer and Adam Rex. We built, own and operate the Escalante Cliff House Escalantecliffhouse.com and Birch Creek House Birchcreekhouse.com in Escalante Utah. The San Juan Mountain House will be completed in 2026 and we plan on taking reservations as soon as we know when we’ll be finished.

The Lodge will operate as a vacation rental from June 1st thru October 31st every year. In the winter months, a qualified backcountry guide that has adequate experience and training in avalanche safety will guide guests to the property. There are numerous areas around the house that have high avalanche potential, so the backcountry guide will determine whether accessing the lodge is safe and what terrain near the house is safe to access. Popular winter sports that are accessible a short distance from the lodge are cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snow cat skiing, heli skiing, etc… We currently have a partnership with San Juan Expeditions to guide cross country skiing and snowboarding from the house, if you would like to partner with us and provide guide services to our guests, we’d love to partner with you.

The home is fully off-grid yet intentionally engineered for reliability and comfort. Solar power with battery storage, a backup generator, propane heat and hot water, and dependable water systems allow you to enjoy modern amenities while remaining completely disconnected from utilities. Starlink internet provides the option to stay connected when needed, without detracting from the remote experience.

Designed for groups, families, and small private gatherings, the layout balances shared spaces with private bedrooms, making it ideal for extended stays and multi-day adventures. Large windows, wood stoves, and expansive views reinforce the connection to the surrounding landscape in every season.
