Rustic 2nd Story Apartment w/small kitchen

Welcome to Lava Ranch — a working horse ranch and farm-stay retreat tucked into the rolling, golden landscape of the Palouse, 60 minutes from Pullman and a short scenic drive to Palouse Falls State Park. At 821 Old State Route, Hooper, WA, Lava Ranch blends authentic horsemanship, hands-on farm life, and low-key, nature-first accommodations: tent campsites and a cozy apartment for groups or families. Whether you’re a horseback rider, a photographer chasing light across wheat hills, a family looking for a meaningful outdoor escape, or a traveler after quiet country nights under the stars, Lava Ranch was designed to give guests real access to rural life with welcoming hospitality and thoughtful amenities.

The Property
Lava Ranch sits on a working horse training property surrounded by sweeping Palouse vistas, pastureland, and quiet lanes. The ranch is organized to separate guest spaces from core training areas for safety and privacy while preserving the feel of being “on the ranch.” You’ll find tent sites tucked into natural settings with fire rings and picnic tables, RV hook-ups with full services, and a private apartment with kitchen facilities for families or longer stays.

- Apartment: A fully outfitted apartment with a small kitchen (heat plate, fridge, microwave, coffee maker), dining area, private bathroom, queen bed plus sofa bed, and farm views. Suitable for families, longer stays, or guests who want the comfort of a home base while enjoying ranch activities. We have cots that can be added to the space.

What to Expect On Arrival
Check-in is by arrangement; please communicate estimated arrival time. Guests are given a short orientation to the property, the location of facilities, safety briefing around animals and equipment, and a quick guide to trails and amenities. Parking is available on site; larger trailers or horse trailers should notify the host in advance for best placement.

Safety & Animal Etiquette
Lava Ranch is a working farm with animals and equipment. Please observe posted signage and follow host instructions.

- Respect the animals: Do not approach paddocks or horses without a host or staff member present. Horses can be unpredictable; proper approach and handling will be taught for visitors participating in activities.
- Children must be supervised at all times, especially near animals, water containers, or fire pits.
- Helmets are required for all mounted activities (we provide helmets or you may bring your own).
- Guests with allergies or sensitivities should let hosts know prior to arrival.
- Quiet hours are observed from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM to respect neighboring properties and the animals.

Accessibility & Family Friendliness
The ranch operates on rural terrain. Some sites and facilities have level access; others have natural, uneven ground. The apartment and at least one glamping unit have easier access for guests with limited mobility—please ask for specifics when booking. Families are welcome; we offer child-friendly activities and prioritize safety during farm tours.

Nearby Attractions & Day Trips
Lava Ranch is an excellent base for exploring the Palouse region:

- Palouse Falls State Park (approx. 30–40 minutes): A dramatic waterfall and canyon — a must-see for photographers and hikers.
- Pullman (60 min): Home to Washington State University — local coffee shops, farmers’ markets, and cultural events.
- Steptoe Butte State Park (~35–50 minutes depending on route): Panoramic Palouse views; spectacular at sunrise and sunset.
- Local Wineries & Breweries: Several nearby valley and rolling-hills wineries and craft breweries for a leisurely afternoon.
- Regional Hiking & Photography Spots: Your host will provide curated suggestions based on season and weather.
- Community Events: During college season, check Pullman and local calendars for fairs, farmers’ markets, and university events.

Practical Info & What to Bring
- Bedding & Towels: Provided in apartment; tent campers should bring sleeping bags, pads, and personal linens.
- Toiletries: Basic soap provided in apartment; tent campers should bring personal toiletries. Composting toilets are on-site; we provide instructions.
- Food & Cooking: Campfire cooking encouraged. Apartment has kitchen facilities. Guests are welcome to use communal propane grills where available. Basic supplies available for purchase in an on-site farmstand (eggs, seasonal produce); nearest full grocery store in Colfax.
- Water: Potable water is available; bring refillable containers for the campsite.
- Clothing & Gear: Weather is variable—layers recommended. Sun protection, sturdy footwear for trails, and rain gear if forecasted. For horseback riding, long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
- Pets: Pets are welcome by arrangement; rules apply to protect wildlife and livestock. Please keep dogs on leash and clean up after them. No aggressive breeds unless disclosed and approved prior to booking.
- Phone & Connectivity: Cell coverage is variable; limited complimentary Wi‑Fi near the apartment. Consider bringing offline maps if you rely on GPS.
- Payment & Booking: Bookings through Hipcamp are preferred. Add-on experiences (rides, meals) can be reserved ahead or on arrival if space allows.

Sustainability & Stewardship
We operate with a small-farm, low-impact philosophy: composting toilets, thoughtful water use, and a small organic garden that supplies seasonal produce. Guests are encouraged to pack out what they pack in, minimize single-use plastics, and follow Leave No Trace principles. We also work with local suppliers and partners for food and activities to support the regional economy.

Host Profile & Hospitality
Owner and host, Randy & Robyn Lavasseur, plus their children Bryce, Enzo and Lilliana run Lava Ranch. Randy brings years of horsemanship and ranch management experience and a commitment to sharing equestrian life respectfully with visitors. Hosts are available to answer questions, lead activities, and ensure safety and a warm, personalized guest experience. Expect friendly, hands-on hospitality with clear boundaries for safety and respect for farm operations.

Rules & Policies
- Check-in/out times are listed on the booking page; please respect them.
- No smoking inside enclosed structures. Smoking is allowed in designated outdoor areas; please dispose of butts responsibly.
- Quiet hours 10:00 PM–7:00 AM.
- Fire safety: Fires only in provided fire rings; follow posted guidelines. No unattended fires.
- Respect training schedules and restricted areas; some paddocks and training facilities are off-limits.
- Liability: Guests participate in activities such as riding and farm chores at their own risk. All riders must sign a waiver prior to riding.
- Cancellation & Weather: We make reasonable accommodations for severe weather but recommend travel insurance for longer stays. Specific cancellation terms are posted with the booking.

Wildlife & Natural Features
The Palouse region supports abundant birdlife and small mammals; it’s an excellent place for birdwatching in spring and migration seasons. You may see deer, rabbits, and seasonal raptors. Please observe wildlife from a distance and avoid feeding wild animals.

Photography & Creative Retreats
The ranch’s landscapes are a draw for photographers and artists. We can tailor recommendations for light and location, suggest transportable gear needs for driving to nearby overlooks, and, by request, arrange guided photo walks timed for golden hour. Workshops and mentorship sessions can be offered seasonally.

Why Choose Lava Ranch
- Authentic rural and equestrian experience blended with comfortable accommodations.
- Variety of lodging options: from basic tent sites to furnished glamping and an apartment.
- Hands-on activities and structured lessons for multiple skill levels.
- Proximity to Palouse Falls and other iconic regional landscapes yet quiet and private.
- Host-driven hospitality with deep local knowledge and a focus on sustainable practices.

Booking Notes & Tips
- Reserve riding and farm-activity slots in advance, especially during peak season and weekends.
- Review the activity add-ons when booking—trail rides and breakfasts often have limited spots.
- For RV guests with large trailers or livestock trailers, contact the host so we can arrange ideal site placement.
- If you’re photographing sunrise or sunset scenes at off-ranch locations, ask the host for directions and parking tips (some viewpoints are reachable via gravel county roads).

Closing Invitation
Lava Ranch is more than a place to sleep — it’s a living, breathing ranch where guests can touch the rhythms of country life, learn horsemanship skills, and let the wide skies and rolling Palouse hills reset the pace of daily life. Whether you arrive for a single night under the stars, a week of riding and learning, or a family weekend that becomes a yearly tradition, we’ll do our best to make your stay safe, welcoming, and rich with the quiet pleasures of rural hospitality.

We look forward to hosting you at Lava Ranch — bring curiosity, respect for animals and land, and a sense of adventure. If you have special requests (large groups, accessibility needs, private lessons, or pets), please contact us ahead of booking so we can prepare and ensure the best possible visit.
