Lutherstadt Eisleben [ˈa͜isleːbn̩] is a medium-sized city and the second-largest city in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in the eastern Harz foothills of Saxony-Anhalt. It is known as the birthplace and final resting place of Martin Luther. In honor of the city’s most famous son, Eisleben has borne the nickname “Lutherstadt” since 1946. The Luther memorial sites in Eisleben and Wittenberg have been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.[3] Eisleben is a member of the Federation of Luther Cities. Eisleben covers an area of approximately 25 by 10 kilometers, as several surrounding municipalities have been incorporated into the city. The largest district is Helfta, home to the monastery that was revitalized in 1999.

The city center is located 30 km west of Halle (Saale) in the Mansfeld region. Geographically, Eisleben is situated on a long, narrow strip of lowland known as the Eisleben Lowlands in the southeastern part of the district. The urban area, through which the Böse Sieben River flows, is characterized by agricultural land. Between Unterrißdorf and Oberrißdorf, the landscape rises to the elevation of the Mansfeld Plateau; the city area covers the majority of this landscape. The southern part of the city is traversed by the forested Hornburger Sattel ridge; the southernmost district, Osterhausen, lies almost within the Helmetal valley.

Several streams flow through the city limits; in the city center, for example, is the Böse Sieben. It forms at the confluence of seven streams from the Vorharz region and is called “Böse” (meaning “evil”) because its floods used to be particularly devastating. The Böse Sieben flows eastward into the Süsser See. Another small stream is the Schlenze in the north; it originates in Polleben and then flows northeastward into the Saale. The Schlenze, too, can rise sharply during high water. Smaller streams worth mentioning include the Glume, which originates south of Helbra and flows into the Böse Sieben east of Eisleben, and the Laweke, which originates in the Hedersleben neighborhood and then flows eastward. The valley of the Hegebornbach, south of Volkstedt, is scenically beautiful; this stream originates west of Volkstedt, flows through the village, and then joins the Glume east of Eisleben. The most important waterway in the south is the Rohne, which begins near Bornstedt and flows through the Osterhausen district.
