The Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve lies directly on the former inner-German border. A circular hike across the Strangen peninsula and along the Kirchensee (Church Lake) impressively demonstrates how formerly populated areas and border fortifications have been and continue to be reclaimed by nature. The approximately 40-kilometer bike tour around the Schaalsee is also highly recommended.
