The Strandwood House in Gager Ferienhaus
The Idea
The boathouses along the Baltic coast were once used primarily for storing and maintaining boats and fishing gear. The traditional, simple structure, its integration into the landscape, and the honest use of materials also served as a source of inspiration for the “Strandwood House.”
The idea behind the architectural design is as simple as it is well-thought-out: plenty of light, an emphasis on sightlines, and a restrained, harmonious design. The house embodies a laid-back attitude, a sense of style, and a high level of comfort.
The use of natural building materials and clear, functional structures with many built-in features creates a sense of clarity and spaciousness. The living area spans more than 130 square meters; the spacious main room, including the kitchen and dining area, is characterized by an open gallery. The ceiling height here reaches nearly eight meters. All rooms receive light from two sides.
The custom-made Danish windows with large panes and simple slate-gray wooden frames create an interesting contrast to the white-painted maritime pine panels that clad the interior spaces. The floor on the first floor consists of sanded exposed concrete, while the upper floor features parquet made of brushed, whitewashed oak planks. The entire house is comfortably heated via underfloor heating and, with a wood-burning stove and sauna, guarantees a cozy atmosphere year-round. The furnishings consist of high-quality designer furniture; the coordinating color palette features primarily shades of white, gray, mauve, and teal.
Amenities
Living room, loft, three bedrooms (1 with a large double bed, 2 each with 2 single beds that can be arranged as desired) and two bathrooms (upstairs with a shower, toilet, and 2 sinks; downstairs, a spa-style bathroom with a rain shower and a freestanding bathtub, also with a sea view) provide space for up to 8 people. An extra bed can be added in the loft. Two large wooden decks with oak palisades providing wind protection, facing east and west, invite you to enjoy the outdoors from morning to night. The fenced-in garden features a lawn, and the house is surrounded by plants typical of the Baltic coast.
The amenities leave nothing to be desired: a wood-burning stove (you must bring your own firewood), underfloor heating, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and furnishings, espresso machine, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, two large flat-screen TVs, DVD recorder, stereo system, washing machine, dishwasher, grill, 2 sets of patio furniture, sun loungers, bike shed and racks, two parking spaces. All rooms are equipped with mosquito screens.
The Location
With water right at its doorstep, the house on the Mönchgut Peninsula at the southeastern tip of Rügen couldn’t be better located. The unobstructed view opens up toward the southwest, taking in the Hagensche Wiek all the way to the Granitz Hunting Lodge on the Tempelberg. Toward the stern, the vacation home is framed by the Zickersche Alpen. This gently rolling hilly landscape, more than 60 meters high, is part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve; it is ecologically sustainably grazed by sheep and is a paradise for hikers and walkers. Just a hundred meters from the house lies the Bodden beach, a popular spot for kitesurfers. It’s just 1,800 meters to the fine-sand beach, which gently slopes into the crystal-clear Baltic Sea over a length of five kilometers between Lobbe and the seaside resort of Thiessow—only a few minutes away on foot or by bike. The popular seaside resort of Sellin, with its numerous restaurants and traditional seaside architecture, is also very close by.
The “Strandwood House” is a smoke-free property. Dogs are also welcome upon prior notice and for a fee.
