It was originally called the Kiskörei Reservoir, created by the dam of the Kiskörei water stage. The lake encompasses the Tisza River, which flows along the border between Heves and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties, and is characterized by flood control dams. Before the regulation of the Tisza in the first half of the 19th century, this area was a true whitewater region. In the second half of the 19th century, the regulation of the Tisza began; it was initiated by Count István Széchenyi and designed by Pál Vásárhelyi, the most prominent hydraulic engineer of the Reform Era. The lake features beaches, canoeing and boating opportunities, and various sports facilities in several towns.
