We absolutely loved our month in the beautiful hills of Mompeo. The location of the house was at the top of one of the hills, overlooking the Roman valley and the views were just breathtaking at every hour of the day. We spent plenty of time drinking coffee or sipping wine on the front deck area (equipped with two lounge chairs and an umbrella to block the hot summer Italian sun) and really loved the views and scenery. The home is quiet and solitary - we didn't see many (if any) other people but had the opportunity to eat a delicious, home cooked Italian meal at a neighbor's home (the arrangement was organized by the property owner).
We took advantage of the short distance (1.5 hour scenic drive) to Rome and spent several days driving into Italy's capital for some sight-seeing, eating, shopping and general wandering. Rome is close enough to make for a fun little day excursion. There are also a number of nearby towns situated on the top of hills in the vicinity to explore with great restaurants, cafes and old city centers. However, with a one year old we spent most of the time at the house and enjoyed our evenings outside in the stillness of the olive grove.
Only downside was the unbelievable heat during the month we were there - it was obscenely hot and there was no real escape from the heat (no AC in the house so we bought our own fans). We wished we were closer to the beach or a lake or something where we could refresh ourselves and cool off. However, heat like that is an anomaly in Italy (we were told) and at any other time of the year I think the location would be just about perfect.
Overall, this was a wonderful way to experience rural Italy. The property owners are gracious, knowledgeable, helpful and unbelievably kind and responsive. We couldn't have asked for more.
