Our week in the adorable and spacious cottage at Lower Willsworthy Farm was one of our top vacations yet. The farm — home to a variety of happy, well-kept animals — is the tidiest, most beautiful such place I have ever seen, a reflection of the handsomely restored stone house we stayed in. Owners Mike and Sophie — lovely folks who are perfectly-suited for their lifestyle — gave us a warm welcome (as well as ducks’ eggs and homemade cake) and took us on a tour the second day, which was vital as the property is extensive and comprises innumerable gorgeous natural features. One such treasure is the small brook close to the cottage, where our 3 kids, aged 9-12, had loads of fun playing. Farther out there are places to access the crystal clear River Tavy, and on a hot sunny day, that’s just what we did. We also enjoyed walks and greeting the ponies, hens, and a friendly black cat. One afternoon we arranged a short introductory riding lesson with Sophie. A kinder, more patient and positive instructor you won’t find. It’s evident that Sophie really loves working with her animals and her guests. The kids enjoyed it immensely and went riding farther afield later that week at another local stable. Other highlights of the week include visits to Lydford Gorge, Launceston castle, Cotehele, Tavistock, and Plymouth and the Mayflower museum. This region is full of family- friend attractions. The cottage and farm are almost mythically beautiful, and we will certainly return if we can!
