From the moment I found Colliston Castle through HomeAway, I knew it was my dream come true. My family consumes anything historical- not just names and dates but the stories. We found it all here! It’s a place most of us can only dream about, but for 10 days, it was real. When we arrived, John and Sue greeted us personally, made us feel welcome and John gave a tour of the home. Complete, easy instructions were provided as well as a history of the castle. To live for a short while within the walls containing hundreds of years of history was surreal. While reading through the history of the castle, we enjoyed the delicious homemade tea cake Sue baked for us. The grounds are exceptional, peaceful and serene. I found myself drawn to them, just to absorb the peace and tranquility they offered. We all found ourselves strolling around at different times, rain or shine.
Inside, the furnishings are beautiful and so appropriate that we felt at home. All 12-14 of us loved the kitchen, taking turns cooking. We loved the AGA!
The many and varied books in the libraries throughout the castle are a treasure. We turned on the tele only once for a few minutes. Instead, we found ourselves drawn to the libraries.
One rainy night, we sat near the fireplace and shared stories. The sensitive sensor lights in the hallways only added to the ambience of the place. The bedrooms are perfectly furnished and the beds extremely comfortable. They were most welcoming after days of exploring and visiting nearby sites. The castle is in a perfect setting, yet perfect for day trips to almost anywhere!
A perfect holiday, thanks to our hosts. They were nearby only if needed. The only thing I noticed as we left, we all wished their dog had come to visit more often!
