While searching for a place to stay during our trip to Antigua, I had several criteria in mind. I'd like to list them and explain how Tranquil Farm met the criteria, revealed new criteria we hadn't thought of, and exceeded our expectations.
We needed to get away from everything! The property offers seclusion without being frustratingly difficult to reach. The central location is ideal for people looking to explore the island. The driveway is really fun to traverse, just make sure you rent a vehicle with some ground clearance!
We wanted peace and a certain kind of quiet! The property is in the rainforest, so quiet nights aren't really an option. However, the noises we sought to and did in fact hear (frogs insects and birds) in the candlelight will put you in a trance while you lie in the four poster under the mosquito netting with the windows up and balancing a cold rum punch on your belly.
We wanted simplicity! Tranquil Farm is completely "off the grid" and can be as primitive as you want it to be. The cottage has lots of windows and the climate is so perfect that air con isn't necessary. There's a continer of fresh water and a charcoal brazier for cooking. There are also lots of candles and kerosene lamps. Not feeling so primitive? There's solar powered LED lighting, a fan, a radio, bedside lamps, wifi, two sinks, a real toilet, well stocked fridge (fed two for nearly a week) and very hot water in the outdoor shower.
The one thing we didn't expect was The owner herself. One of our fondest memories of the trip was getting to know her. We spent hours on our day of departure chatting and drinking delicious coffee. She met our every need as guests and more. She's extremely interesting and has a lot to offer in the way of Caribbean travel advice.
If you're going to Antigua, do yourself a favor and stay at Tranquil Farm. During the long flight home you'll enrapture your fellow passengers with the adventures you're likely to have had in choosing the type of trip travelers who'll find Tranquil Farm appealing. If you want an interesting trip, please make this your home base. The only thing you'll regret is having to leave!
