This is a cute and cozy house with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. The setting is beautiful and the house has everything you need. The Christmas decorations were a nice touch!

The house and property are gorgeous, comfortable, and clean. However the outside hot tub jets did not work. The check in time is 3 pm but we were not allowed to check in until 4. Despite these two issues, our stay was wonderful and we do intend on booking another vacation here.

- AC units in neither of the downstairs bedrooms worked properly - No indication that the property was so close to a major highway, in fact the pictures gave the feeling of being more out in the country - The hot-tub had dead leaves on the bottom. Not sure if they were left from the previous tenants or someone local had used it.

Peaceful Retreat

Had an absolutely wonderful stay, home was clean and quaint with a peaceful setting. So much room and the rooms were perfect and 3.5 baths was a blessing! Walmart, Starbucks, and gas stations right up the road without any feeling of being in town. Loved drinking coffee on the porch in the morning and finishing the day with a dip in the hot tub at night. We brought our dogs as well and they loved playing in the creek and exploring with us. Would definitely stay again!!

Lots of Potential

Charming old farm house that is decorated nicely with a warm homey feeling. This home has no Mountain View, but does sit along a creek. If you don’t mind a view of the highway and wind blown trash along the creek. The hot tub was not working correctly, it had piles of dirt inside. The owner did send a repair man out, but it still had dirt in it the next day. A new cleaning crew is advised, dirty floors, bedding with dog hair, and dusty decor. The home has one working shower otherwise baths with hand held shower heads. The heating systems are challenging. Lighting the two old gas fireplaces were dangerous and difficult. We never did get one of the fireplaces working. This home has a lot of potential, but pricey for what you get. A big plus was its proximity to West Jefferson’s cute downtown and the local grocery store.

Cute but dirty

This is a very quaint, old house in need of a new cleaning crew. Vacuumed up several critters, dust bunnies and cobwebs myself, before I could put kids to bed. Table top, fans and window AC units were filthy. Both the owners and management company were aware of our cleanliness complaint, but chose to ignore it and stand by their cleaning company instead. Just because they had time stamps from when they cleaned the house does not mean they cleaned the house well! Owners would do themselves a favor by walking through...one look at the walls and ceilings, and they wouldn't be able to miss the dust. Grounds were beautiful and kids loved exploring outside. 4 bathrooms but only 1 stand-up shower. More like camping than vrbo-ing.

Location was great lots to do in the area

The pictures advertised were deceiving The living room was very small. The chairs in living room needs to be updated, the stove needs to be updated, all the bed mattresses need to be updated, all the beds very uncomfortable.

Excellent location with charming house

We stayed for a quick weekend getaway and celebration of my youngest’s thirteenth birthday. We had my parents, my husband and I, and three kids ages 17, 17, and 13. We loved the town and area. The house was charming for sure and would be lovely for when the weather allows for spending time outside. The house is not great for those with mobility issues as the stairs outside don’t have railings and the bathrooms require stepping into high tubs and using a handheld shower upstairs. The beds upstairs were pretty hard. And it took a while to get the house warmed up thanks to the unexpected cold snap. But once we found all the thermostats and figured out how to turn on the fireplace, it eventually warmed up. Great place for young families.

Awesome Place to Unwind

Took our son to tour App State and stayed here for the weekend. Great place to stay and unwind from busy world. Sitting on the porch listening to the creek roll by, relaxing in the hot tub, roasting s’mores at night, catching trout in the creek, or just hiking make this the perfect place. The only problem we had was not wanting to leave. We will definitely be back for a longer stay.

Weigh the Pros and Cons

Our overall weekend was great and our experience at the property itself was okay, but it came with a few pros and cons that we think are important to know: PROS: -The hot tub was awesome and felt very new. -The house is full of character and the owners clearly put a lot of time and effort to make it cozy/comfortable -The fire pit -There was a lot of space indoor and outside. We were a group of 2 couples and 2 children, and there was more than enough space. We could have had another family join us and still wouldn't have felt cramped. -The beds were comfortable -The house was well-stocked with kitchenware -The washer and dryer (also very new) were nice given that we did a lot of hiking -Close to grocery stores and places to eat -Not a bad distance from Boone, Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, etc. CONS: -The house was cold. Granted, we visited on a cold weekend in the winter, but the house is very old and difficult to heat. The owners did a lot to help (there are space heaters or gas heaters in most spaces), but staying warm was still a challenge at times. We were unprepared for this and would have brought slippers, long sleeves, hoodies, and sweatpants for loungewear had we known. -The house was old, which the owners are very upfront about. It's not a good rental if you're looking for a more modern feel. Creaky floors, some doorknobs that didn't work and therefore doors couldn't shut tightly, etc. -Not great for views. It overlooks a stream, which is nice, but it also looks right out onto a busy highway, a couple of businesses off that highway, and power lines. Overall it wasn't a bad weekend at all. We had a great time, but we recommend you weigh the pros and cons before booking.

Really nice stay

The house was great! It was perfect for our family of four adults and four children. The kitchen is large and well equipped. The kids enjoyed running around the property and exploring the old barns. Most of all they loved the hot tub. And of course our two dogs loved their freedom to roam. We had a wonderful visit!!

Beautifully secluded location yet minutes away from adventures.

My family really enjoyed the features our rental offered. We enjoyed evenings around the fire pit as well as the hot tub. Rocking on the front porch and relaxing with all my family.

Rustic Farm House

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was clean. I was more than happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our family of 12, 6 adults and 6 children stayed in this rustic country house over the July 4th weekend. This property was available 2 weeks prior to our stay and thankfully there was plenty of room for all of us. It was wonderful sitting out on the porch in the evenings, once the children were in bed, and watched the lightning bugs in the fields and enjoying the peace of the night. This home is quite old and could use some restoring but its charm makes up for the creeks of the floorboards and the old wood smell. It is very close to West Jefferson which has shopping, and restaurants and is also close to canoeing and kayaking on the New River. One word of warning, if you are sensitive to musty smell you might want to think twice. The children had a wonderful time playing in the stream. Although we never used the hot tub, it looked very clean. There are 2 wall units AC upstairs that kept that area cool and downstairs it was cool enough at night. There are fans available if needed.

Reviewer Comments: The Lil' Red Hen is a cute restored farmhouse located just down the road from downtown West Jefferson and close to a number of hiking spots. The place has tons of room with 4 spacious bedrooms and 3.5 baths. The house itself featured a number of nice touches for a family including baby gates for the stairs and a wide selection of games. Weather permitting (we visited during the winter), there is a top notch porch sitting opportunity with Beaver Creek flowing by just in front of the house. It has everything you need for your family (including your DOGS!) to enjoy your stay. The town itself is very cute and has a number of nice restaurants (we esp enjoyed Boondocks & Sweet and Savory), very nice downtown movie theater (great prices and comfortable seats), a number of unique shops, and multiple hiking options nearby (Cascades Trail was beautiful and good for kids). We would definitely recommend the town and the Lil' Red Hen for your getaway into the mountains.
