AUTHENTIC ‘VILA NONA’ by NYC Interior Architect
It was created from the love that the Busanic’ & Picinic’ families had for wine & sea, a spectacular home on the island designed for friends, guests and travellers of taste, providing the best of all!
Offered for the first time for rent. Its one of the finest, understated thought-out rustic beach homes on the island encompassing design, functionality, authenticity and relaxing comfort. Stone-house w/professionally landscaped courtyard.
The courtyard, that noble architectural effort to bring the outside in, is a simple endeavor that never fails to uplift. And nowhere is its use more impressive than at Vila Nona.
INTERIOR SPACE = 270 m2. -encompassing 3 floors.
EXTERIOR SPACE = 75 m2. - includes a large professionally designed landscaped courtyard, terrace off the master BR and a balcony in the central staircase of the home.
This rustic stone house has 3 BR/1 Bth, AC, stone grill and it’s just 2 minutes from the main beach in the lower village and a 15 min walk to your own private beaches. Vila Nona has an outdoor shower, kayak, snorkel and wave boards available to all guests.
All three (3) floors of the Interior space + the private courtyard on the exterior of the Vila are private for your guest(s) use.
COME ONCE, YOU'll COME AGAIN AND AGAIN!!
Otok Susak is unique in Croatia in that it is almost entirely sandy. A mere 3km by 1.5km, the island has no roads, just silky soft trails that crisscross the island, often trimmed by sweet-smelling shrubs. It has a population of less than 200 (more on that later), yet the island has become an unlikely outpost of international art, hosting the Susak Expo among others.
Susak is a small island located in the Kvarner Bay, about 7,4 km southwest from the island of Mali Lošinj. It’s geologically different from the other Adriatic islands in that it is mostly made of sand which ancient winds deposited onto the limestone plate. A long time ago people planted reeds around their fields. In search of the water, its roots penetrated deep into the soil and preserve it from erosion. So actually thanks to farmers and their crops, the island exists to this day.
In Italian, Susak is called Sansego. What’s interesting, the name comes from the Greek word Sansegus which literally means “oregano”. As you can guess, on the island grows a lot of this aromatic herb. Another interesting fact is there are practically no trees on the island. The area is mainly covered with reeds (locals call bamboos) and vines.
There is only one village on Susak which consists of two parts: the lower and the upper one. The island is car-free, there are no roads on it and the only means of transport are wheelbarrows. ( If you like such places, be sure to read also about Gothenburg Archipelago, a hidden gem in Sweden ).
There are many beautiful beaches on the island of Susak and each one is unique. From the side of the island of Lošinj, there are sandy beaches with shallow sea, and from the side of the open sea, there are stony beaches with crystal clear water.
Bok Beach: The Sea here has a wonderful special blue color, and only the sound of waves can be heard because there are no crowds. “It was so peaceful and beautiful” as one guest said.
Today, there are fewer and fewer places like this where you can enjoy nature and feel part of it. Bok plaža in Susak, is one of the prettiest beaches in all of Croatia.
Currently, the island of Susak has a population of about 200 people. There used to be much more inhabitants here, but most of them emigrated to the USA - specifically northern New Jersey. Susak’s history is very interesting and vibrant and it’s worth reading more about this island (several books / photos provided on-site).
The inhabitants of Susak have their own dialect, which is not understandable even for Croats. This dialect, as well as specific customs and colorful costumes, have been preserved due to the isolation of the island and ongoing traditions of its people.

SUSAK... is a small island not far from Croatia's main land - This idyllic settlement - it entirely consists of the traditional houses the Croatian border is famous for - is divided into two parts: One is atop a hill, and the other one is in the valley right underneath. Hills are to be found in the whole island.
On Susak, the use of motor vehicles is prohibited. Together with the old buildings and the fact that most of the island is uninhabited, this creates the experience of a time machine for everybody coming from a big city. So it is no wonder that Susak enjoys great popularity with tourists.
There are really several kinds of travellers that make it to Susak: Some of them indeed seek a place that still has the same appearance as it did for many centuries, that's the history buffs. Others come for the peace and quiet that Susak has to offer - and the third category consists of people interested in aquatic sports - and, oh, yes, there is one more group, and that's actually the people who look for all of these factors - for them Susak is simply perfect.
In a way it is fortunate that Susak was for so long a part of communist Yugoslavia - hence the island was neglected and almost forgotten, and the result is that the hotel blocks that one would expect at such a place are simply not there.
Susak's nature has basically remained untouched - for centuries!
SUSAK has an ‘ethos' that is unmatched anywhere along the Croatian Riviera. This is why the Island is so unique for different people and contribute their passion to the island through art, music, design, etc.
One visit is worth a 1000 pictures!
