Unique Private Sandy Beach and Bay

Welcome to Breakwater Bay ready for your next week getaway to sun, sand, the sound of waves and spectacular sunsets.

Situated on 5.5 acres of the north shore of Lake Huron, property is truly unique with an expansive beach for sunning, swimming, water sports or just relaxing. Amazingly, this gorgeous bay is completely private yet only 2 km from the quaint town of Thessalon for any necessities. Thessalon main street offers a well stocked grocery store, hardware store, pizza parlour, LCBO and very popular gift shop. Should you be interested in a workout instead of a playing on the beach, there is even a terrific town run fitness centre which offers really reasonable $5/day passes. 4 kayaks, 1 paddle board, many floaties, a badminton/volleyball net all available on the beach to keep your afternoons busy. Should you enjoy campfires firewood is provided.

Well maintained and equipped A-frame cottage has 3 bedrooms suitable for 6 adults and an additional sleeping space on indoor deck with twin single futon sleepers. These futons work well for children or teens as additional beds and/or for catching up on work or for games. Dining table seats 8 comfortably for family meals or enjoy the south west facing deck with picnic table. WiFi and a dedicated small work space with an incredible view. Stone and propane BBQ's for grilling. A second cottage (ours also) sits on the far west edge of the bay 140 metres but is not visible from Breakwater. Breakwater has access to the full beach and is very private as it is at the end of a short cottage road.

Washer and dryer available is available for your use in accessible room at back of second cottage.

We love furry friends and with all this space you can let your furry friends wander without worry.

New in 2026 - While the breeze off of Lake Huron generally keeps the cottage cool, we have added three portable AC units for the bedrooms useful on very warm days.

New in 2021 - If you are keen on your Timmy's - a Tim Horton's and gas station with convenience store were recently added at the west edge of Thessalon a 1 km walk away. Many guests have told us they enjoy this new addition to the town.

Breakwater Guest Tips booklet is shared two weeks prior to your stay to ensure you have all the details for a terrific visit. Another copy of this booklet plus a small appreciation gift will be found on the dining table when you arrive. No need to connect with anyone, the key will be left in a secure place for your arrival. Just return it there please upon departure with our thanks.

A jem of a place. Well supplied for cooking and soaps, towel, and paper products. The beach is outstanding and private. We used the kayaks and paddle board and toys. The front deck is huge, great for star gazing. Lots if front windows for the view. One downside i think felt by all who were there. Around 4 to 7 with the sun and humidity the place was a furnace Bedrooms needed a fan full blast at night.

End of summer vacay

It was everything I had hoped for…private, lots of mature trees, sound of the waves. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. It was a lovely cottage experience and I would be happy to return.

Loved our stay at the Breakwater cottage on Huron Shores. A lovely property with private beach, jus.

We loved the property. It was as described in the VRBO lising, and then further exceeded our expectations. The cottage was spacious and clean with a large lakeside view deck. Beach is amazing. We highly recommend.

Fantastic beautiful stay

Was a pleasure to be here and enjoy the cabin and scenery.We enjoyed it to wake up to a beautiful lake front and go to bed with waves sounding on the beach. Great sand beach for the children and awesome fishing had about 10 fish right off the rocks. Definitely would recommend to anyone and have already.

Great family cottage!

The cottage and property were perfect for our family of 6 with lots of extra room. The cottage was very clean and stocked with everything we needed. The private beach was beautiful with lots of activities and the large deck looked over a beautiful view of the bay. We look forward to returning.

Beautiful cottage and beach

Our family (2 adults, 4 kids) really enjoyed our stay at Breakwater. The cottage has lots of space both inside and out and has a very warm and inviting atmosphere. It has everything you need ( incl. good wifi for teenagers!) The beach is the best part though. Huge, beautiful sand and a shady spot to sit no matter the time of day. Judi is a wonderful host. We had a minor issue while we were there and she had it fixed quickly and efficiently. Everyone had a fantastic time. Thanks for a wonderful week!

Breakwater is beautiful!

Our family had a wonderful week at this fantastic cottage! We spent our days on the private sandy beach, swimming in the clear water and enjoying our meals on the spacious deck. Amenities such as groceries, gas and ice cream are not far. We will be returning!

Private and Peaceful

Lovely 50s A-frame cabin with all amenities, reminiscent of trips to cottage country as a kid. Perfect for traveling with our dog. Cabin is on very private road and in close proximity to grocery store for any necessities. Spent much time on the deck and on the beach taking in the views of Lake Huron. So very relaxing. We hope to return again!

Amazing

We had an amazing time, just what we needed take time off busy lives and breaking the routine. Peaceful and quite with great view. The cottage was just perfect cozy and right on the beach. Definitely need to do it again in the summer time.

Breakwater is a family oasis

My family enjoyed a perfect cottage getaway at this unique and beautiful vacation home. The cottage was well-appointed and had everything needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The private, sandy beach and clearwater bay (equipped with a fantastic assortment of beach and water toys) provided an idyllic summer playground for the whole family. We are exceedingly grateful to Judi for sharing with us this very special property.

Excellent cottage; private beach is best

Terrific property. Excellent, responsive host. If you want a relaxing vacation with water sports, this beach is a unique feature. The cove is private with clear water and a sandy bottom. Our only slightly negative comment is there seems to be a lack of local attractions to visit. For us, anyway.

Magical lake retreat

I can’t say enough about this wonderful house and it’s magical location. We had the best time exploring, relaxing and just enjoying everything. The beach and water are amazing. Perfect,protected bay. We enjoyed the kayaks and paddle boards and explored all the areas around us. We went strawberry picking and hiking and sat on the deck each night grilling out. The house is very well equipped and appreciate our hosts and all the info they provided.

Treasured getaway

Unique waterfront location, extremely private. Great sandy beach with all you need to have a great time in the sun. Stunning sunsets and beautiful A-frame cottage with deck overlooking the lake and beach. Had the privilege of meeting the owners upon our arrival; very welcoming and easy going people. We enjoyed our stay as a family. The local shops have everything you need and more. Thank you for sharing such a great gem with our family!

Beautiful Retreat

We had a wonderful time during our week at the cottage. The view of the lake is amazing, and we spent a lot of time on the sandy beach playing badminton and enjoying the kayaks and SUP. Tim Horton’s is only a few minutes drive, and we stocked up on produce and homemade baked goods at Desbarats Country Produce which was about a 20 minute drive. Judy was very helpful and quick to respond when we had questions. We enjoyed our stay. Thanks, Judy!

Great trip!

Our family of 5 (kiddos ages 1, 4, and 6) plus our canine companion had a wonderful stay. The weather was fantastic, and the location and property were just what we were looking for in this experience. Judi was always quick and friendly in all communication and we appreciate the thought put into so many features at this cottage. We especially loved over looking the beach at the end of the day with the warm sun shining in as we prepared dinner. There was something for everyone here. Beach, hikes around the property, close to town, kind neighbors, and a beach easily shared with the other cottage on the property. Thank you Judi!

Getaway on Lake Huron's North Shore

The views over the north shore of Lake Huron were spectacular, and there is no better sound than the sound of waves lapping onshore. Darcy gave the Red Squirrels a hard time (we had never seen Red Squirrels before) - very entertaining. We saw Mergansers, and there were 2 Ravens who flew over the rock every morning. And the Hummingbird visited. The cottage was exactly as described, and Judi was very responsive when I emailed her. Thanks for the great stay!

Amazing cottage!

Breakwater was an amazing find and place to be with my family. The house was very clean and stylish and the kitchen had all of the amenities needed to make great food. The views off the deck towards Lake Huron AND the cottage's own private beach were breath taking. The private beach had a volleyball net (which we played badminton with), a SUP and two kayaks which we enjoyed everyday. I would absolutely recommend this private get away. Judi, the owner of the house was very proactive and responsive to all of our communication. The cottage was build by her grandfather and you can tell this home has a lot of family love built right into it!

Beautiful property

We had a fantastic time here. The property is lovely, and the cottage was spotless when we arrived. Because the beach has several large rocks, I recommend bringing water shoes. Furthermore, because the property owners own the cottage next door, the beach is shared with them rather than private. They did, however, always respect our space when we were on the beach. Thessalon is a charming town where everyone is friendly. We were also relieved to discover that Tim Horton's was only a 2-minute drive away. The fact that our pets were welcome was our favourite part!!

Hidden Gem

This property is a true hidden gem. In our search for summer solitude, we have stayed at many properties on the Great Lakes over the years. This has been the best so far. The big selling point is obviously the private beach. You will likely be spending much of your time there, boating in the cove, or on the big deck overlooking it. It was perfect setting for our dogs to run around leash free. The house is cozy and well appointed with everything you need. The beds were comfortable, which was a big relief. The internet was fast enough for Zoom calls. There was plenty of hot water. The host checked in a couple of times through VRBO, but we did not need anything further. We hiked the Coastal Trail in Thessalon. The Rock Candy Lookout Trail and Aubrey Falls are a drive to the north on 129. There is also a short trail in Bruce Mines. The Soo is only an hour drive away if you are craving more city fare. This is the perfect stay to slow down and rejuvenate.

Property was purchased in the early 70's when my mother was the camp nurse for Camp McDougall adjacent to this bay. She of course fell in love with its beauty and set about finding who owned the land. As my father was a forester by profession he completed the inside and some of the furniture from pine trees he cut on the property and prepared for the cottage. The land is stunning and unique with a south west facing private bay surrounded by Canadian Shield rock points. This provides the bay's name Breakwater as the points regularly keep the bay calm and protected even on windy days on Lake Huron. The two rocks points are also ideal for campfires and views.

My parents liked nothing better than seeing families and friends enjoy this beautiful property. We are always so pleased when guests tell us how special they found their Breakwater stay.
