The sheep's retreat farmstay

Beautiful views to Mount Ruapehu. Staying on a working farm looking over paddocks full of sheep or cattle is something very special that you will write home about. Happy if you are travelling alone, as a couple, or a family with children. We are very child friendly but discourage pets for the protection of our animals. You will be amidst sheep in every room. If you have an additional group or a smaller group we also have the Cattle Stop Farmstay just down the road.

Farm-didn't stay

Unfortunately the listing instructions gave us an address to go to and when we got there we couldn't find anyone, with no mobile reception we decided to drive up the road. We then found someone at the next house who told us the accommodation was further up. Got to the house and we found it unclean. All floors were unclean, kitchen benches, dining table, dining chairs, couches in the lounge all had crumbs on them. Fridge hadn't been wiped, same with stove tiles (we're like oily smear) kitchen sink had a bit of food in it. Bathroom had some hairs. The BBQ is not like the one in the photo, this one was grease laden with all the 'fat absorbing granules' all over the ground with more grease. The son arrived to deliver towels, we tried to bring it up with him but he said the previous people were really messy. He then gave a wee vacuum. He was not very helpful and he obviously didn't know what to do. We messaged Julie who responded straight away and promised they had cleaned for 4 hours... I don't believe that we are fussy guests, we've stayed in multiple accommodations over the years, you just expect somewhere to be clean. Julie gave us a partial refund and we didn't stay (we then went to Palmerston North to try to find somewhere to house 8 of us).

The views from the property were incredible! The house itself was spacious with lots of old world charm. The deck has amazing views and a great spot to eat and hang out both family while taking in the views. The kitchen window had an incredible view of Mt Ruapehu! There is a swing set for kids and space to go exploring. There are books and toys and activities.We found it lacking in care, maintenance and cleanliness. The toilet/bathroom/bed linen were hygienically clean. However, the floors and ceilings had cobwebs, the backs of the cupboards had insect droppings, the carpets and the lounge needed a good clean and had a musty smell. The BBQ had not been cleaned and was super grimy. The rubbish from the previous guests had not been emptied and the bins were full - so we brought our rubbish back with us. The entranceway is covered in cobwebs and bird droppings. The bathroom tap sprays everywhere - so not a good idea to use the tap once you're dressed to go out! We didn't receive any welcome communication just before our trip and so had to find a number and follow up as our messages via the app weren't being answered. Once phone communication was established our text messages were responded to. Having never stayed at a farmstay before, we were unsure if this standard was what to expect. It was a bit daunting when we arrived and through the first day and it took some getting used to. Some care and maintenance would transform guest experience at the property.

Our stay at the Sheeps Retreat

Marvellous setting. Better than we expected. Home very rustic on keeping with the location. We had a great time watching the Kererus and even a kingfisher. Listening to the peacocks . Took a walk in McPhersons Bush needs a bit of work but quite pleasant. Thank you

Awesome sensation of a real farm!

If you're after a spacious place in the middle of farmlands with a view over hundreds (or more) of sheep and cows, don't look further! The place was clean and tidy and the host (although not met in person) was also friendly and helpful. A lot of sheep symbols are presented all over the place. Just bear in mind that if you use Google Map, it'll take you to another property down the road. Once you're there, drive up further until you get to the place on the left, which can't be missed.

Excellent place, Excellent gateway

Julie was amazing as well as the place. Prompt responses from her + the place was very convenient as basic utensils to bbq equipments - all the main necessities we needed were available. Plus point for us were the freedom to play some loud music & spend a quality night (most of the places we searched online did not have that flexibility). Planning a longer stay in there soon! Keep up the good work all. Only negative aspect was the bbq machine was a bit dirty, but no worries! We had a good stay!

Kiwi farm stay

We really loved coming to this farmhouse, enjoying the views of hills and farm animals. The house was plenty big enough for our family to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Thanks Julie for helping to make our time together so lovely.

Great accommodation and hostess

9 of us stayed at the house with ages ranging from 3 years to 83 years. The house was spacious and clean, the beds very comfortable. The view was lovely, my son spent time using his binoculars to watch deer on the hills a little way away. The section was fenced so the 3 younger children were able to play outside and when it rained, were able to play on the deck. The toy selection left for them to play with was great. The only thing that could have been improved was the shower head which kept flopping down and had to be hand held. Our 7 year old granddaughter rated it 100 out of 100. We would happily stay here again. About half an hour drive to Whanganui to the parks and shops. Thanks for all your help Julie and for letting us see the highland babies.

This quiet rural location is perfect place if you are working in the Rangitikei or in Wanganui. Great half way meeting place from Wellington and Auckland situated in the middle of the country. We also have another property just down the road to host more of your friends for a bigger meeting.

There is a bush walk up the road. The deck provides shelter to get outside if it is raining and also a perfect place to relax with a cuppa or a nice glass of something cold.
