Enjoy semi-seclusion on the beautiful Suwannee River

The area received heavy thunderstorms due to the offshoots of the named storm in the Gulf. The power went out due to a main line being knocked down near the Town of White Springs, FL. 479 Duke Energy customers had no power. Within a short time of power going out the guest demanded a "full refund of their trip" and claimed they had lost "$200 worth of food". I advised him the power company gave an estimate for restoral but the day before it had been much quicker. The wonderful Linemen had the power back on in less than 4 hours. We provided a 20% refund of the net amount we received (less the cleaning costs). VRBO gave the guest a 16% refund ($42) of the amount they received. I asked them why they did not get trip insurance that would possibly cover inconveniences like this, we always recommend trip insurance for just such occasions, but they just ranted about why they were entitled to pass all of the costs on to us. A short outage like this is not something that merits a full refund and VRBO agreed as they only gave a refund of the guest fee. Unfortunately, we do not control the weather (or power company) and on occasion in Florida, especially rural Florida the power does go out. It has gone out at this property 4 times in the last 7 months (2 of those being this weekend). An outage is a great time to sit on the swing in the screened in porch and enjoy what you came for a beautiful view of the river and the wild, wonderful outdoors. After speaking to my neighbor, he said perhaps the guest misunderstood the conversation as from time-to-time hurricanes and floods leave the area without power which is part of the tradeoff for living in such a wonderful location right on the beautiful Suwannee River. He said he offered to run a power cord over for the guests to use and they declined. There are candles and a lighter, as well as a flashlight, in the property but in this case not needed as the guests informed me that they were leaving before sunset. There is one thing I agree with the guest on: Anytime you visit a rural scenic location you are "staying at your own risk". Rivers rise and fall sometimes suddenly; storms come and go sometimes suddenly. Part of what makes a vacation magic is the experiences that come with unplanned events. It is also why you should spend a few extra dollars and purchase trip insurance for unplanned and unexpected events.

Thanks for letting us know about the dust on top of the fridge so we can address it after the fact. So sorry it had such a huge negative impact on your stay. We would have addressed it immediately had you let us know during your stay of this issue. I did go myself and clean it off as soon as we read this after realizing that our cleaner probably is not tall enough to see the top of the fridge from her vantage point.
