Jack was a lovely guest: very respectful and treated the house kindly. We didn't have a lot of contact during his stay: just when he reached out after not being able to figure out how to work an air conditioner, and our property manager was on site to help within the hour. So after his positive comments in the reivew, I was really surprised to see the three-star rating. So I promptly reached out to him directly to ask for feedback: what could we have done better, to improve his stay? (We only rent in the summer, so have just have about 10 guest-groups per year and realize that they've paid good money and looked far ahead to that week of vacation, and deserve a lovely and carefree time.) Unfortunately, I didn't get a reply to either of my emails. I hope that maybe the three stars was a mis-click, after the positive description. But if it wasn't, we are always open to feedback about how to make a stay better for our guests.

Thanks for your review, Meg! I'm so glad that you and your family had a wonderful time. We originally had 2 kayaks: a single as well as an ocean tandem. Somehow (and this remains a mystery to me) the single disappeared and a canoe appeared in its place--perhaps a previous guest felt bad about losing the kayak and replaced it with a canoe by mistake?--and this has now been updated on our listing. The tandem is a low-lying ocean kayak so is meant to float above the water rather than keep all water out, and I personally confirmed that it's fully ship shape.

Julie was a lovely guest, and I'm so glad she and her family had a great time. I also deeply appreciate the feedback, which I immediately passed along to our cleaning team. She's 100% right: at this price point, guests have every right to expect a super-clean house. And what might look like mildew in the master shower is actually discoloration from the original tiles, which is why we already scheduled a full renovation of that bathroom during the offseason to make sure it gleams for next summer.

I was saddened to read John's review. When he first inquired about renting the house, I explained that this is not an investment property; it is our "forever home," which we return to for a couple of weeks each summer and plan to retire to, when work no longer keeps us in another state. As such, we try very hard to be good neighbors, which includes not having loud parties or large events. I explained that if he was looking to host a large gathering, ours was not the place to do it, and he agreed. (And kept his word.) He is correct that the pool was not in optimal condition when he arrived, and that is our fault (which I promptly addressed with our pool maintenance team). Not only did our pool team come out daily to address this problem--the first time we've had it in seven years on VRBO--but it was fixed by the second day of his stay, and I refunded one day's rental fee to express my regret. Similarly, the lawn was mowed on the second day of his stay. As for the description of the house and grounds, I would encourage potential guests to look back on every previous review. Our home is not only fully booked throughout each summer; it is fully reserved usually by the first of the year, often with return guests. I do hope that John was able to celebrate his son's graduation. He was kind to leave a thank you note as well as a bouquet of flowers, and to message me that "The house and the views are stunning."
