A comfortable studio with a surprising view over the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can enjoy the best our beautiful island has to offer, without any rush. Lying in bed or even resting in the hammock, while the sun sets on an endless ocean, it’s a complete peace of mind to be savoured. Take a deep breath and enjoy this relaxing moments at our cottage Tenda.
Cottage Tenda belongs to Calhau Grande, a group of 8 typical self-catering cottages in Arco da Calheta with breath-taking panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. It is a simple and genuine haven for those looking for a quiet escape and a real experience of Madeira Island’s lifestyle.
Deployed on private terraces, the rustic oceanfront cottages, which have been carefully and eco-friendly restored with love and care by our Family Gouveia, suit the natural environment and are surrounded by tropical gardens. You can feel the smell of the flowers, relax by the swimming pool, enjoy wonderful sunsets and discover our agricultural land with fruit trees, vegetables and aromatic herbs. It is a familiar, romantic and peaceful place away from the stressful city living!
If you like exploring nature but also relaxing after a day of great adventure, then you are invited to stay in our Cottage Tenda. It is a comfortable and typical studio with private entrance, living space, kitchenette, bathroom and a large balcony. The cottage has great floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors towards an unbelievable view. Here you can enjoy surprising sunsets while drinking a glass of wine or simply watch dolphins or whales jumping in the ocean. The sleeping area can accommodate two persons in a double size bed (1,50m x 2,00m).
The house benefits from an excellent south-facing sun exposure. In the exterior area, there is a private garden with table and chairs for the exclusive use of the house. Inside the property, there is a swimming pool, shared by the 8 cottages.
Calhau Grande is the sharing result of our rural experience in Madeira. You are warmly invited to live it with us!

Hi, we're Família Gouveia. Some years ago we were looking for a calm location to spend holidays in countryside. We found Calhau Grande: a wild place with big rocks, terraces and superb ocean views. We immediately felt in love and decided to restore the ruins, step by step, to create our shelter. It later became our family tourism project. Since 2004, we started our journey welcoming guests & friends in Madeira. We will be glad to receive you too!

Calhau Grande and its Cottage Tenda are located in Arco da Calheta, a friendly and quiet village, bay-shaped and facing the ocean, on the Western area of Madeira, considered the sunniest part of the island. In this place, 250m high from the ocean level, it looks like Spring all year round, as it take advantage of surprisingly balmy weather! In summer, the temperatures range from 24ºC to 27ºC, and in the Winter from 17ºC to 20ºC. You may expect to find a typical and picturesque village, surrounded by green areas, banana plantations and tropical gardens.
Calhau Grande is around 15 minutes by car from the top of Calheta Mountains (Paúl da Serra) with its breath taking natural landscapes and wonderful Levada walks. You can reach the ocean level and the beach within 5 minutes driving. Funchal is 30km away and it takes about 25/30 minutes by car to arrive there. You can easily find facilities in the vicinity within walking distance in Arco da Calheta and Loreto: restaurants, supermarket, local mini-markets and snack-bars.
When traveling to Madeira Islands, you may expect to discover: local traditions, beautiful hikes with spectacular scenarios, the Laurissilva Forest classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, great variety of regional dishes and wines, unmissable touristic events and amazing adventures.
