We enjoyed our stay at "Left Bank," a well-used, family summer home built in the late 1800s. Its best feature is the amazing, spacious veranda overlooking Blue Hill Harbor where seals, osprey, comorants and bald eagles share the space with some spectacular yachts and boats. With good weather, you'll likely spend much of your time there. The owner's photos make the property look a bit more luxurious than it is, but the home is cozy, with clean, comfortable bedrooms and a well-equipped kitchen and bar area with two refrigerators. We especially enjoyed the large fireplaces and candlelit dining room, which was the perfect setting for our murder mystery dinner! Smoke from the living-room fireplace did tend to make the third floor smokey, so we avoided using it. The house uses cisterns for water, which is not potable and used for bathing, toilets, dishwashing, etc; drinking water was provided via large water cooler/carboy type bottles. Water conservation is important here and something guests should be aware of. Our group of 11 plus two dogs never felt cramped. We swam, skin-dived, paddleboarded and kayaked, and loved stargazing from the dock. There's ample parking, which is not shown in photos. Blue Hill is only 5 minutes away, with restaurants, coffee shop, groceries and seafood. Acadia and Bar Harbor are about 55 minutes away, making day trips easy. Left Bank isn't a luxury rental, but it's a charming, comfortable old Maine summer home in a beautiful waterfront setting.
