The Neighborhood:

Located on the edge of the Lake District National Park, Penrith is a charming Cumbrian market town that blends traditional character with easy access to some of England’s most breathtaking scenery. With its attractive sandstone buildings, independent shops, cosy cafés and welcoming pubs, it offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere — perfect for a holiday base.

The town centre revolves around its historic market square, where you’ll find a mix of local retailers, eateries and handy amenities. History lovers can explore the impressive ruins of Penrith Castle, once associated with Richard III, while the surrounding countryside provides endless opportunities for walking, cycling and outdoor adventure.

The property is ideally positioned between Penrith and the popular Lake District town of Keswick, giving guests the best of both worlds. While Penrith provides excellent transport links, shops and services, Keswick offers a lively Lake District atmosphere with outdoor gear shops, traditional pubs, cafés and a vibrant market. Nestled on the shores of Derwentwater and surrounded by dramatic fells such as Skiddaw and Catbells, Keswick is a favourite base for walkers, climbers and nature lovers.

Penrith is perfectly placed for exploring the northern Lake District, with beautiful lakes, rolling fells and scenic drives all within easy reach. The majestic Blencathra dominates the skyline nearby, offering spectacular hiking routes and unforgettable views, while Ullswater — often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the region — is just a short drive away.

With excellent road and rail links, plenty of local amenities, and easy access to both Penrith and Keswick, the area offers the perfect balance of convenience, outdoor adventure and countryside charm — an ideal destination for a relaxing Lake District getaway.

Getting Around:

Penrith benefits from excellent road and rail connections, making it easy to reach from across the UK and providing good access to the wider Lake District. The town lies just off Junction 40 of the M6 motorway, with the A66, A6 and A686 meeting here — giving direct road links east and west towards Keswick, Carlisle, Kendal and beyond, and making self-drive travel throughout Cumbria straightforward and scenic.

For rail travellers, Penrith North Lakes railway station is located close to the town centre on the West Coast Main Line. It is served by Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services, offering direct routes to major destinations including London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Regular trains make Penrith an easy stop for visitors arriving by public transport and provide a comfortable base from which to explore the Lake District.

Local bus services connect Penrith with surrounding towns and villages. Stagecoach operate regular routes linking Penrith with Keswick, Carlisle, Ullswater and other destinations, including scenic routes such as the 508 via Glenridding and Ullswater. A town service and several regional buses from Penrith Bus Station and stops near the railway station provide options for day trips without needing a car.

Keswick, located around 20 minutes west via the A66, is also a key transport hub for the northern Lake District and is easily reached from the property. The town has a busy central bus station where Stagecoach operates frequent services to popular destinations including Borrowdale, Buttermere, Cockermouth, Workington, Ambleside and Windermere. Seasonal and scenic routes run through some of the Lake District’s most beautiful valleys, making Keswick an excellent starting point for exploring the area without driving.

Although Keswick does not have its own railway station, it is well connected to Penrith by regular bus services, allowing visitors arriving by train to easily continue their journey into the heart of the Lake District. The A66 provides a fast and scenic road link between the two towns, making travel between them simple whether by car, bus or taxi.

Taxis and local hire services are readily available in both Penrith and Keswick, with ranks at Penrith railway station and within the town centres. These are particularly useful for transfers to nearby holiday villages, walking routes or attractions not directly served by bus.

Positioned conveniently between Penrith and Keswick, the property benefits from the transport links and amenities of both towns — making it easy for guests to arrive, explore the surrounding fells and lakes, and travel throughout the Lake District with ease.
