Enjoy fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere at Bear Tree Cabin! Cute as a button, it's nestled on the edge of a forest and gets its nickname from an unusual natural formation on a tree in the yard that looks like a bear is hugging it.

Our zip code is Sugar Grove, but the cabin is just 3 miles from the historic Mast General Store in Valle Crucis and is situated in a rural farming neighborhood just off of the Watauga River Road. Fishing, canoeing or swimming in the Watauga River is 2 miles away. Bring your mountain bike and enjoy the gentle grade of the Watauga River Road ... or for a little more adventure, let our resident mountain bike expert recommend a nearby trail that fits your abilities ...

A 4x4 or AWD vehicle is helpful for the short but somewhat steep gravel driveway.

Free-standing air conditioning units are located in the bedrooms for those occasional warm days in July & August. The cabin has ceiling fans in each bedroom and in both living areas. Warm blankets are also there for the cool summer nights!

Private setting, yet a very convenient location to Boone, Banner Elk and most area restaurants & attractions.

Shopping at the historic Mast General Store is only 3 miles away. Restaurants of all types are in Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock.
Zip-lining and snow tubing at Hawksnest is 25 minutes away. An Alpine Coaster ride is located in Banner Elk, across the road from Sugar Mountain Resort.

Pets not allowed.

During the winter months ... Three ski resorts are within a 25 to 40 minute drive. Snow tubing is an option for the non-skier at some resorts nearby. At the end of the day, come 'home' to a relaxing well-maintained hot tub. Four-wheel or All-wheel drive is needed for the gravel driveway if it snows and helpful even without snow.

We also own a Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farm nearby that is open mid-November through early December. It's called Bear Wallow Choose & Cut Farm.

During most times of the year, we require a 2-night stay but it doesn't hurt to ask about a 1-night stay!

Perfect romantic getaway. Communication with the hosts was top notch and provided all we needed for an efficient check in and out. The cabin was secluded but easy to find. We loved the privacy of the hot tub. Everything was perfect.

Hot tub and grounds were beautiful. Quick ride to all the ski resorts. Next time I would have went into downtown Boone for some shopping and a meal, I didnā€™t realize how cute and close till headed out of town. It was a great family trip. Host was so responsive and had everything we needed on site.

The entire experience was amazing! From great communication, to the cabin itself; every part of this weekend was perfect! My husband and I had such a relaxing time, the bed was perfect, the place was cozy and peaceful, and the watching the snow fall just topped it! We will definitely come back

Took my whole family on a ski trip for my 50th birthday, 6 adults, two kids, and it couldnā€™t have been any better of a trip starting with this wonderful gem we came across! Absolutely beautiful on the inside, plenty of room, and oh so cozy! Felt comfortable we made a great choice. Sooo quiet ! Had everything we needed to cook meals as far as utensils and pots/pans, silverware, etc. And the jacuzzi was the cherry on top! Especially since this 50 year old still snowboards. I definitely recommend staying here, and will hopefully stay here again. 10/10

This house was just what our family needed during our restful mountain get away. It was secluded for great privacy but not too far away for amenities. It was just a gorgeous drive. I would recommend 4wd or AWD for the driveway, but it wasn't too bad! We can't wait to come back again!

We stayed two nights in the beautiful cabin. My husband and I came to the mountains to just relax and do nothing. It was perfect. We enjoyed star gazing at night and reading and chilling during the day. We did go visit Mast General, which is just a short drive away. It is very clean and comfortable.

A resident of Watauga county for most of his life, owner Jim Henson has traveled around the world climbing mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, and Mt. Ranier. He is an avid mountain biker and enjoys playing tennis. He grows Christmas trees on part of his farm, but the vast majority of his 250 acres is woodlands and he has donated a conservation easement on more than half of his land to the Blue Ridge Conservancy. When you inquire about the cabin, you will be corresponding with Jim's assistant, Angela.
