Historic Manor House on Beautiful Eastern Shore Estate

THORNTON Estate, established in 1664, is a quintessential Eastern Shore estate. The magnificent manor house anchors the 325 acre preserved farm outside of Chestertown Maryland.Ā 
Lord Baltimore granted the original patent for Thornton from colonial lands he received from King Charles I of England in the early 17th century.Ā  Conveyed to Philip Hopkins in 1693 the estate is still owned by his direct descendants. The current manor house ā€” Ā built in 1815 ā€” was fully renovated in 2008.

Four generations of my family, aged 8 to 80, spent Christmas week here. There was something for everyone in the house and on the property. The antebellum mansion has been beautifully restored, with the addition of modern bathrooms and a gorgeous modern kitchen. Itā€™s a beautiful, comfortable space for a family celebration.
Exterior with greenhouse, which was full of blooming geraniums.
My grandson fire-roasted a rack of lamb on the fire pit for our Christmas Eve dinner.
Library with gas fireplace and a good collection of books and games.

The home is really impressive. 200 year old manor house with updates to satisfy the needs of our group of 12. The pool was very nice. Plenty of sleeping, cooking and eating areas.

We had a great time. We showed up with our stuff, and everything was ready to go. We were impressed with the number of items in the kitchen that we could use to prep our meals. The place is gigantic inside and out, and the property is beautifully maintained. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are thinking it may be a required revisit next Summer!

Great place to stay!

Our group had a great experience staying at Thornton. We had a large group in town for a wedding and it was the perfect place to spend time with friends. The house was gorgeous, the communication with the team was timely and efficient, and everything was clean and well-equipped. Weā€™d definitely stay here again.

Annual Family Vacation

Perfect property for our annual vacation with all the kids and grand kids! Loved the property and the secluded location - but still close enough to town. Beautiful, well-kept manor with everything you need. Loved the pool and the spacious grounds! Absolutely gorgeous!

Last minute getaway

Three of us rented this property for a long weekend and it was absolutely magnificent! The property managers were outstanding, we had complete privacy, and the house did not disappoint! We look forward to returning!

Family vacation

We had the best vacation in this historical beautiful home. Everyone in our family had awesome time. House was very comfortable and clean. Loved the pool area. I only wish they had more shaded area by the pool. Property manager Mathew was very friendly and helpful in making sure that all our needs were met. Definitely recommend this home. Love to come back.

Great place for a big family trip

We loved this property! We visited with our large family (8 adults and 4 kids ages 3-6) for a long weekend and had a nice and relaxing stay. Very spacious inside, with lots of room to explore outside. Great kitchen, and tons of comfortable seating everywhere. We loved the pool too. Groceries and downtown Chestertown are just a short drive away. We would definitely recommend and return.

Tribe Trip

The property is so beautiful with lots of room to spread out both inside and out. The kitchen is well equipped. It was clean. The pool was lovely. And Matt, the property manager, was extremely nice and helpful. Itā€™s perfect for groups and we will definitely be back!!

Eastern Shore Paradise

Our extended family and friends gathered at Thornton Estate to celebrate being together after 15 months of isolation from the pandemic. Our ages ran from 4 months to 95 years. We had a truly wonderful time. Many thanks to Phil for his responsiveness, Sarah for care and Matt for being there whenever we needed him. We canā€™t wait to return to paradise!

Beautiful spot!

We celebrated Thanksgiving with our extended family and 91 yo mother. Living spaces were spacious to accommodate all. It is an old house so 3rd floor bedrooms were not meant for tall folk with sloping ceilings. Dining room table extended to seat 14 for all meals. Kitchen has every thing you could need plus plenty of space to have multiple cooks in the kitchen! We sampled some of the ā€œestateā€ wine from the vineyard outside and walked the beautiful drive many times to work of our turkey dinner! Would absolutely stay here again The property is beautiful

Priceless memories made at Thornton

We had an absolute memorable stay at Thornton. The estate has a rich history and every room has a distinct, charming character. Could easily spend the entire afternoon in the Library, playing games with the family. And yet the best part, is that there are so many wonderful spaces to explore and enjoy outdoors. Our family enjoyed walking down the long path to the creek and pond, and we made use of the pool every morning, afternoon and evening. We really enjoyed watching sunrises and sunsets from the outdoor patio, and looking up at the stars from the garden at night. Oh, and the staff was very friendly and responsive. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a private, adventurous escape with your family. My family and I will certainly be back!

Chesapeake Country Getaway

We grew up going to our family's Bay house in the Summer and loved it. I wanted a similar experience for when my sister and her family were here in town from Hawaii. This was amazingly perfect. The tree lined gravel driveway was picturesque. The blowing wheat fields in the background of this home were like a painting. The home itself was so well maintained and updated. We had plenty of space and each person could have their own room not allowing for fights with the teens. The kitchen was updated and we enjoyed cooking and eating take out in the spacious area. We played soothing music in the cozy family room while we played cards together. The pool was just the right temperature on a hot sunny day. My morning runs around the property on the trails made the start of my day enjoyable. Nights catching fireflys brought us back to our childhood. The proximity to downtown Chestertown and Rock Hall was great to enjoy shopping and dining out. I will definitely be back!!

Fabulous!

We had a family gathering which included several toddlers. All enjoyed the pool, the fire pit, walking the property and eating al fresco. The dormers in the bedroom above the kitchen make it a bit tricky for adults so be careful. Also, shower/bath water temperatures should be warmer. Nonetheless, we leave the property with huge smiles on our faces and hope to return in 2023.

Eastern Shore idyll

Our family gets together every summer for a week of lengthy meals, games, and time together. We haven't been able to do that since the summer of 2019. This was a lovely place. All of us had a marvelous time. Thank you!
