Makalani (Heavenly View) Cottage is a delightfully romantic cottage surrounded by a tropical garden in South Kona's coffee-belt with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. For the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty and serenity, you can spend your whole vacation here gazing out over the endless ocean and its incredible sunsets. In the winter, you can spot whales breaching from your outdoor lanai or listen to them singing at night. Awaken to the music of colorful birdsong from papaya, mango and banana trees.

With a perfect year-round climate, perched at 1200 ft. above the sea on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is authentic Hawai'i unspoiled by crowds and resorts. A great location that gives you many options for experiencing The Big Island's natural diversity. From your cottage you are just 4-minutes from the closest beach and 15-minutes to Ho'okena Beach State Park for sunbathing and swimming with dolphins. A 20-minute drive brings you to the famous Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historic Park and Kealakekua Bay where you can kayak to Captain Cook's monument and snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. And best of all, you're only 65-minutes from Madame Pele's live action at Volcanos National Park.

Your cottage is tastefully appointed with Indonesian teak furniture providing a romantic comfort reminiscent of Colonial British tropics. Your large open-room (studio) cottage sleeps two luxuriously with a romantic king-size canopy-bed with a memory-foam mattress fit for royalty. There is also a convertible couch-futon which can comfortably sleep two additional guests. You'll have a fully-equipped kitchen as well as dining area for four. A large outdoor lanai with barbeque gives you garden seating with a stunning ocean view. Your detached private bathroom with semi- outdoor shower will provide a refreshing Hawaiian experience with nature.

There is also a detached guestroom/meditation room available which is set in a grove of mango trees overlooking the ocean, called the 'Mango Grove Lookout'. It has a sofa-futon which can comfortably sleep one or two people. Serene and magical, this special extra-room provides daytime privacy as well as an intimate camp-like Hawaiian sleeping experience.

My family had a wonderful time at Oceanview cottage! Everything was perfect at the cottage and my son (4) loved the geckos greeting us from the ceiling! We loved the location, out of town and yet easy to get everywhere on the west side of the island up to the volcano. Its really close to Ho'okena beach, which ended up being one of our favorite beaches for playing at and snorkeling (very easy for kids). The cottage had everything we needed and Harry was very kind and even provided us with a pack and play for our baby.

Fun Jungle Stay

Beautiful tropical plants and flowers, comfortable living area, roomy outdoor bathroom, shower head nice and tall with good pressure and plenty of hot water. Wonderful million dollar views. Far enough south to make it a short drive (about an hour and 20 minutes)to the volcano.

Perfect getaway

The cabin is perfect and the property is beautiful. Harry was a great host. The cabin is stocked with condiments and spices as well as coolers, beach chairs and boogie boards. Itā€™s a bit of a drive from Kona but itā€™s a beautiful drive that passes by beaches, coffee shops, restaurants and fruit stands. We loved everything about our stay here.

Captain Cook Home

The home overlooks the ocean and it is a comfortable elevation so it just about ideal temperatures. We enjoyed the separation from the hustle of downtown and the country feel of Captain Cook area. Property was beautiful and comfortable, host was warm and friendly. This was a great stay, we enjoyed our time here thoroughly.

Wonderful experience! If you are looking for peace and quiet this is perfect. Our favorite was the outdoor shower and the view! Lots of amenities provided made our stay nice also. The book with recommendations was also very helpful!

Magical retreat

What a lovely cottage with a magnificent view of the ocean! Super clean and beautifully decorated. The pictures are very accurate; this is a beautiful place to stay. Harry is the best host, so generous with tips about everything local. The cottage is furnished with lots of beach items which made our visits to the beaches just perfect. We loved the curious geckos and the charming chickens. Best stay ever!the

A relaxed piece of paradise.

This is a great little cottage. We enjoyed exploring big Hawaii from this base. We drove around the entire island and this was the perfect spot to come back to. The extra flippers, cooler, beach mat and beach umbrella were perfect for day trips. Would highly recommend it.

Exactly as Harry describes it on VRBO. Especially peaceful. If youā€™re more comfortable being surrounded by a lot of neighbors instead of in a peaceful rainforest, then itā€™s possible you wouldnā€™t be so comfortable here. We liked driving off to things and then coming back to this little Haven for the evenings. We were also both under the weather, unfortunately, for most of our time on the big island, so this was a perfect place to recuperate!

Tropical Paradise

Very private tropical location, all the amenities plus extras for borrowing while being away from the property. Drive to town takes a while but being close to town not important to us. Owner friendly and helpful with suggestions. Enjoyed the view, privacy, instant hot water for shower, and geckos :).

Perfect for our small family

The house was even more amazing than I had expected! It was tucked away in a tropical garden where we were surrounded by beautiful sounds of the rainforest. Harry provided everything we could have needed, including tips on places to go and try. My kids are 8 and 10 and they loved exploring around the house and having their own place to sleep in. I would highly recommend this place!

Perfect cottage!

I could go on and on about how beautiful the location is, how great the owner is and how great the cottage is but one of my favorite features was the beach stuff provided! Coolers, chairs, umbrellas, towels, snorkel gear - all available. What a game changer! We packed charcuterie and searched out remote beaches for quiet picnics and snorkeling. Having beach gear was a huge plus!

Private jungle cottage

Beautiful landscape with unobstructed ocean view. Feral pigs , asian pheasants and Hawaiian chickens were entertaining. We snorkelled almost every day in February when it was raining everywhere but Kona. Harry, the owner/host, was very helpful and accomodating.

Hawaiian tropical paradise

Thanks Harry for an amazing stay in your jungle retreat. My husband and I were amazed at the truly incredible sunsets and gorgeous views outside every window. To be immersed in nature so totally was rejuvenating. Even the drive down to the cabin was absolutely stunning. Thanks for your suggestions on local beaches and use of snorkeling/beach equipment, so handy! You were an amazing host. Much Mahalo!

Captain Cook Retreat

Many thanks to Harry for the gracious hospitality. The location was scenic, quiet and off grid but with good accommodations. On site laundry facilities and more efficient internet Wi-Fi would have been ideal. Driving 18 miles to do laundry was not in the property description when first considering the property. Overall the stay was great. Many thanks again!

I love the ocean and the secluded beaches nearby with the wonderful trails leading to them. It feels like 'Old Hawaiiana'. The sounds of the birds, wildlife and whales singing at night in the winter makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors. The tropical garden and romantically furnished interior provide a unique comfort. Lots of wonderful wildlife to encounter.
