The city of Athens mirrored the growth of the University of Georgia which was chartered in 1785. It was an industrial town with a focus on Cotton Mills and the Railroad. With this history in mind, the decor of our apartment is antique and rustic with touches of UGA. The entire apartment is cozy and welcoming, and the location is incredibly convenient to campus and downtown.
There are two private bedrooms and bathrooms (tub/shower) and a shared open floor-plan kitchen, dining & living area along with an outside patio. It is a ground level apartment. It can sleep up to six with a queen bed, twin day bed, and twin trundle in one room and a king bed in the other. There is a secretary desk in the king bedroom.
** Please note that our apartment is located in a complex that was built in the 1980s. If you are looking for a modern and sleek place for your stay, this isn’t it. Clean? Absolutely. Comfortable? 100%. Top of the line polished? Not at all. This is our second home. We lived in this complex while in college and love visiting Athens as alumni, so we purchased this apartment a couple of years after we graduated. It’s filled with family antiques, my mom’s art on the kitchen wall, my husband’s childhood UGA memorabilia, and fun oddities. It has chalk paint on the bedroom doors for our children (and yours) to draw and play on. We’ve largely refreshed and kept a handful of the original features because we like them. Other things are on our one-day to do list. And still other things such as the ceiling patches from where our upstairs neighbor’s plumbing has leaked in the past or the dim lighting on the back patio or the sounds sometimes heard from neighbors, we are at the mercy of how the complex was built. Again, this is not a hotel. It’s our home away from home, and the decor reflects that.
We open our second home up to others because 1. It helps it not become stagnant when we can’t get up to Athens often. Houses/apartments are meant to be lived in. 2. Because it helps cover the cost of owning it. We are more than happy to share it with those who will appreciate it. If you are not one of those people, we understand. Everyone has their own tastes!
THINGS TO NOTE PRIOR TO BOOKING:
1. NEIGHBORS: The apartment is located in an apartment complex that was built in the 1980s. The neighbors may have noises. We DO NOT have any control over our neighbors and the noises they make. Sleep sound machines are provided in the bedrooms to drown out any outside noise you may hear, but please be mindful that this is an apartment complex that shares walls and ceilings and is in a college town. Many of its neighbors are long-term rentals that change residents every year. We do not personally know our neighbors, but we ask that you please be respectful, polite, and kind to them all.
2. PARKING: Parking is free on the premises, but the apartment complex's management company provided us only two parking passes for our guests. You will need to place the parking pass in your cars' dashboard during your stay and return to the apartment upon check-out! (There is a $80 replacement fee per pass.) They are threatening to tow cars if the parking pass if it is not visible in your windshield.
3. HURRICANES: If you book during hurricane season (June-November) and a hurricane looks like it’s going to hit South Georgia (where we live) during the time of your stay, we unfortunately will have to cancel your reservation so that we can safely evacuate our family to Athens. We apologize in advance if this occurs.
4. DESIGN: Please be aware that the apartment complex is over 30 years old. Our apartment has a combination of stained concrete floors and vinyl plank floors. This is for two reasons. 1. We like the look of them. 2. If there is ever any flooding from the plumbing above, as there has been in the past, the floors are not damaged. They are durable and very easy to clean. Simple as that. Similarly, the tubs in the bathrooms are original. They have been reglazed, but we appreciate that they are cast iron and will last forever. Even with the reglazing, there are still slight rust marks around the drain. We of course hope you enjoy the aesthetics of the apartment, but please carefully look through the pictures BEFORE you come to determine whether or not you can accept or appreciate the design choices that were made among other things like the price and location. Since this is our second home, not a hotel, it is filled with passed down family antiques, artwork, and UGA memorabilia. There’s always room for improvement, and we do hope to make more updates in the future when our budget allows, specifically the windows and back doors, but we trust that if you look through the photos, read the description, and decide to stay with us that you will be respectful and appreciative of our home away from home.
5. PRICING: Some of the above statements may seem redundant or unnecessary. However, with the rising cost of fees and taxes applied (that we unfortunately have no control over), we have noticed that guests expectations are increasingly reaching an unattainable reality. This is not a pristine & polished 5 star modern hotel. This is our clean, comfortable, and convenient second home. Our pricing has the same base rate we had in 2016 and is set to smart pricing for VRBO to determine the fair market rental price for what it is and for the appropriate times of year (such as game and event weekends). We are in total agreement that the fees and taxes on short term rental platforms have become outrageous. However, the beauty of this system is still the amount of space you can get versus a hotel, the number of people it can comfortably fit, and the other amenities such as a stocked and ready kitchen and free parking close to campus and downtown.
Thank you for reading through our property’s description. If you decide to stay with us, we hope you enjoy our apartment and Athens as much as we do!
