Heron's Hideaway - Davis Canal fishing dock & kayak launch - dog friendly

Nestled on a private waterfront lot, Heronā€™s Hideaway has three bedroom, two baths and a backyard that in the evenings lights up like a movie set. This family friendly home is located just a quick bike ride away from the beautiful beaches of Oak Island, restaurants, shopping and groceries. It features a fenced-in yard large enough to keep any pup happy and entertained. Watch the sunset from the fishing pier as you listen to the shrimp jump and the sounds of the tide flowing in and out. Launch kayaks from the floating dock and explore the quiet, serene, wildlife-filled Davis Canal where the blue herons fly overhead. Use the crab pot or cast out a few fishing lines to catch your own dinner - and donā€™t forget to ring the bell when you make your big catch. Enjoy yourself under the shady oaks of the large backyard. Put an umbrella in your drink and grab a book as you relax on the back deck. Rest on the swing hanging on the crooked oak tree - it is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of hot coffee in the morning as you look out over the canal or stargaze with the fireflies in the evening. Roasting marshmallows over the built in bonfire pit is the perfect end to a relaxing day spent exploring Oak Island. With plenty of room to spread out or get together for a family dinner, this house is truly a great home away from home. Heron's Hideaway is waiting for you!

Special note for boat owners: The dock and floating Roll and Ride shown in the photos can certainly support canoes, kayaks, John-boats and small fishing boats up to 14ft long/8ft wide/2k lbs that can be used in shallow water. Please be advised at low tide the canal can get as shallow as 2-3 feet.
Having said this, there is ample space in the 100ft long driveway to park your boat trailer and drive to one of the many boat launches all over the island. You can quickly be out on the ICW (inter coastal waterway) which gives you water access to the Atlantic Ocean, Lockwood Folly River, Southport or Baldhead Island.

NOTE: As of 4/1/23 from Apr-Sept Oak Island has implemented parking fees, similar to our neighboring beaches, from 9 am-5 pm for all beach parking.

My husband and I loved the house! It was extremely clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. The fenced yard for the dogs is why we chose this home, and it was perfect. The owners are very responsive.Ā  I am very picky, and would definitely book this home again.

First of all the house was so comfortable, it was so easy to make ourselves feel ā€œat homeā€! Even our dog who injured her leg the week prior was able to relax and feel comfortable! The Art in the house (decor) was so cool we spent the whole week talking about different pieces, paintings and pictures. It wasnā€™t your regular beach themed rental, it was likely a really good book, you just donā€™t want it to be over and find yourself thinking about the experience! We fished, rode bikes, read books on the tree swing (with wind chimes) walked through the canal and sat on the beach! It was all the things you want a vacation to be. This location was tucked away just enough to feel peaceful and the master bed was heavenly we slept so good! Our teen boys had a blast and we all left with full happy hearts and memories! Iā€™m so glad we stayed at Herons Hideaway!

Wonderful Vacation!

We had a fantastic stay! The home was extremely clean and comfortable. The backyard area is beautiful and our boys enjoying fishing in the canal. It's an easy 15 minute walk to the beach via either SE 31st or 20th St. We liked the 20th St location best as it seemed to be less crowded during our stay.

Amazing!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This was perfect! And we loved that we could bring the dogs. My mother-in-law is 85 and sometimes has trouble with some places we stay. Not here. She said "Book it again!" We fished off the dock every day. It was so relaxing and better than we even imagined. We will definitely try to visit again.

Comfortable home both inside and outside. Everything you need to have a wonderful stay. The quiet neighborhood added to the ambience. If I had one complaint, it would be that the overhead lighting in the bedroom could be a little brighter. The TV and the operator had issues, but we overcame that.

We loved Heron's Hideaway!

We had a wonderful week at Heron's Hideaway. The house is wonderful and the location can't be beat! We enjoyed the beauty of Davis Canal and the closeness of the beach. We canoed the canal, crabbed from the dock, and star gazed around the fire pit. We will definitely come back!

Perfect spot

We love this house. It allows us to be able to do everything we enjoy bike to the beach, paddle board and fish in the canal. Itā€™s a great location tucked away in a quiet spot. The house is clean and kitchen is well stocked to allow us to cook every day. This is our favorite house we have ever stayed at on Oak Island.

The Herons Hideway property is A-mazing. If youā€™re thinking of booking just do it. Something for everyone, even better if you have a pup! Just too long to list all the great and thoughtful amenities on the property. The walk to the beach through the marshā€¦wonderful. Book it.

The backyard looks like it was created for a movie set with multiple fire pits, lots of comfortable seating, long walkway to the dock lit up with lights. It is truly magical and sure to provide you with a space to enjoy every bit of your vacation here at Oak Island.

Kitchen is fully equipped for a big family dinner and the house has several outside features and water activity--like a grill, an outdoor surfboard shower, seasonal flower garden, kayaks and a canoe at no additional cost, and, of course, a shed full of lots of beach equipment. It also has a fantastic wrap around fence so you can bring your pups along to enjoy the scenery. Seasonal gas fireplace is available inside and multiple firepits complete the outside space.
