The Space:
The Hunn House stands as a quiet tribute to vision and time - A mid-century modern sanctuary carved into the bluffs of Pier Cove, where Lake Michigan unfurls endlessly at your feet, and every line, window, and material invites you to slow down and stay a while. Named for Florence Ely Hunn, the pioneering architect who first imagined this space, the home has been lovingly restored - Not as a replica of the past, but as a living extension of her bold and graceful aesthetic. Here, history is not preserved under glass. It breathes in rhythm with the lake, offering a space where design, nature, and connection exist in perfect harmony.
Up to 14 guests can unwind and reconnect across a collection of beautifully curated spaces, each one designed to evoke comfort, ease, and a deep sense of place.
At the heart of the home, the main living area stretches wide and sunlit, anchored by nine towering windows that frame Lake Michigan like a series of ever-changing murals. From dawn to dusk, light pours across the clean mid-century lines and soft modern finishes. Early risers will find quiet joy perched at the kitchen island, fingers curled around a warm mug, as the waves below whisper the day awake. The kitchen itself is both sleek and inviting, with generous counter space for preparing meals and gathering with a glass of wine as dinner comes together.
Just steps from the kitchen, the dining area becomes much more than a place to gather for meals - It’s where the day unfolds and memories are made. Begin with slow, easy breakfasts featuring berries from the Douglas market and coffee still steaming in hand. In the afternoons, it transforms into a hub for card games and shared stories after a long day on the beach. As evening sets in, it’s the backdrop for celebratory toasts, candlelit dinners, and conversations that carry well into the night.
The adjacent living room is all ease and atmosphere - A breezy, open space where soft seating invites you to sink in and the lake remains a constant, calming presence just beyond the glass. With doors wide open, fresh air flows freely, carrying with it the scent of water and pine. It’s a space equally suited for slow afternoons lost in a book as it is for movie nights, complete with popcorn, blankets, and the familiar rhythm of laughter and shared comfort. Whether you're gathering together or enjoying a moment alone, the room offers a quiet kind of welcome - Unhurried, unfussy, and always within view of the water.
Each bedroom at the Hunn House offers its own sense of retreat, thoughtfully designed for rest, comfort, and a touch of character. On the main level, three peaceful suites invite you to unwind with leafy views and soft natural tones that reflect the quiet beauty just beyond the windows. Downstairs, a lakeview queen bedroom offers a cozy place to land after a day spent on the sand or wandering nearby orchards. And for younger guests, a whimsical bunk-style room captures the spirit of summer sleepovers - Complete with flashlight whispers, well-loved stuffed animals, and the kind of memories that stay with you long after the trip ends.
Downstairs, a second lounge offers a space all its own - Relaxed, welcoming, and ready to meet the rhythm of your group. It’s a favorite hideout for teens, where they can unwind with games or stream their favorite shows, while parents steal a quiet moment with a book or a glass of wine in hand. Little ones find room to spread out, turning cushions into castles and corners into imaginary worlds.
The lower-level lounge opens effortlessly to the outdoors, where glass doors lead straight to the lakefront patio - A space where fresh air, open sky, and the sound of waves set the tone for unhurried days. This sun-kissed patio becomes a natural extension of the home, perfect for slow mornings with coffee in hand, shaded lunches between beach breaks, and barefoot afternoons spent watching the light dance across the water. Set up a board game in the breeze, share snacks as kids come and go from the shoreline, or simply settle in and let the rhythm of the lake guide the day. As evening drifts in, this same space transforms - Ideal for sunset dinners and late-night conversations under the stars, wrapped in blankets and laughter.
Just steps away, 167 feet of private shoreline await. Newly built stairs provide easy access down the bluff to the sand, where stone skipping, shoreline strolls, and spontaneous swims are always within reach. Whether you're reading in a beach chair, exploring the water’s edge, or soaking in the stillness, the lake is never just a view - It’s woven into every moment, grounding your stay in something timeless and true.
Though it feels like a world apart, the Hunn House places you just minutes from the best of Southwest Michigan. Spend an afternoon exploring the art galleries and boutiques of Saugatuck, take in a wine flight at Fenn Valley, or sip cider beneath the orchard trees at Virtue. Visit Blue Star Farms to pick your own blueberries or head to Crane’s Orchards for apple picking, lunch at the Pie Pantry, and a dozen warm cider donuts to bring back home.
And for those drawn to the home’s deeper story, the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society holds Florence Ely Hunn’s original designs, writings, and photo scrapbooks - A window into the woman whose vision still frames every corner of this remarkable home.
At the Hunn House, time doesn’t just pass - It expands. The lake shimmers with possibility, and every room, every view, every breeze reminds you what it feels like to truly get away.
