Large, rustic, & luxurious are words seldom used together, but accurately describes Spirit Dancer Lodge. A luxurious, energizing, rejuvenating, and romantic get-away far removed from the stresses of city life. We're on 60 private acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Shenandoah Valley. Upon your arrival, you will receive four free wine tastings at a nearby winery. We offer 4000 square feet of living space with queen beds in two of the four, spacious bedrooms with a soaking tub and shower in the master bedroom and two twins in the other bedroom on the main floor. A large, closed-in loft area has four twin beds. All rooms have large windows to let the outside in.

The great room has a huge stone fireplace, dining room and kitchen, all open together and has floor to ceiling windows with prowl front and Brazilian cherry hardwood floors. The deck includes a gas grill and an outdoor chiminea great for s'mores and dinner! Downstairs, you'll find our sauna room (5 person) with a futon, 18 foot stone bar, game room, 62 inch TV and a smaller private den with a queen and additional futon for more guests comfort. ****The house sleeps 12, but can hold up to 14/15 comfortably if using the futon areas as well.

The interior house is specially designed in southwest decor.

We're located in Etlan, VA, just off Virginia's Route 231, one of America's ten most outstanding scenic byways (Great for biking!). We back up to Shenandoah National Park & Old Rag Mountain, which offer numerous scenic hiking trails. We have a stocked pond for 'catch & release' only, however, there's recreational trout fishing nearby on the Rose, Hughes and Rapidan Rivers. Visit many, outstanding wineries, cheese factories, historic sites, civil war battlefields, Luray caverns, historic Monticello and the lovely town of Charlottesville. Antique shop, bike, hike or just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery and numerous wildlife.

The Lodge is ideal for family gatherings, small family weddings, corporate retreats, reunions, birthdays, girls/guys weekends or a romantic getaway.

There are many scheduled events, festivals, and activities throughout the year. There are world class to down-home restaurants within 10-30 miles (Most notable, Inn of Little Washington). So come and relax. You won't want to leave.

Amenities: huge stone fireplace, air conditioning, 62' TV plus three standard size TV's, VCR, DVD, clock radios in each bedroom, stereo, CD, dvd player, VHS player, full stocked kitchen, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, cooking utensils provided, linens provided, washer, dryer, sauna, 18' bar, gas grill, den with queen bedroom and futon, game room with foosball and air hockey, & outside chiminea.

WE JUST HAD WIFI INSTALLED. IT IS SLOW BUT SLOWLY IMPROVING!! we highly encourage getting off the grid…

Wonderful Stay

Our entire group of eleven had a wonderful stay. The entire property is great and the communication with the owners/manager was great (we had difficulty with the sauna and got a call from the owner walking us through it all). Would very much recommend the property and would happily stay again!

Beautiful Setting and Comfortable House

We loved everything about the house and the area. It was perfect. However, it would have been nice to know that supplies were limited -- no paper towels or other essentials. Please remind visitors about what they should bring.

Beautiful location and property, accommodating host!

The acreage on this property was just the best. We stayed here over our wedding weekend, and between this cabin and the Sun Dancer, our entire families were able to stay near each other AND the venue. Couldn’t ask for a better location and the host was so accommodating. The grounds are beautiful, and walking between the two lodges amongst the fireflies was pretty magical. The trails, the catch and release pond and new pavilion were also very much utilized- it was just the right amount of space for a large group to spend time together AND spread out if they wanted/needed to.

Our family had a wonderful time at Spirit Dancer. The facilities are wonderful, to say the least. The kids loved the game room, naturally enough, and we all enjoyed the view from the main floor, deck and spa. The biking in the nearby area is enjoyable. We spent many mornings roaming the lightly traveled, if a bit hilly country roads. The hiking in in the nearby Shenandoah National Park is beautiful as well(particuarly the Canyon/Waterfall hike). Can't say enough really....

Great for groups

The location is hard to beat being so close to hiking trails (some of my favorite in the DMV), wineries/breweries, and even world class restaurants. The house has huge common areas and made for great places to hang out and play games. Plenty of twin beds so there wasn't very much sharing needed. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need. There are now over 1000 coffee filters in a drawer as of April 2023.

Absolutely horrible

The place was misrepresented, the property was absolutely filthy, and I wound up with a terrible rash from the place. The property house was somewhat hard to deal with and resolving my issue. I will never stay in that dump again.

First and foremost, it is fair to say were not shocked by this review, given how the weekend transpired. Disappointed is a better word. Despite staying the entire weekend in such a “horrible” place; despite us coming onsite to discuss the concerns, despite us working with you during and after your stay, despite the opportunity to leave at any point, you chose to stay. We have multiple 5-star reviews, even one in the LAST MONTH, that contradicts your opinion or experience, and we hope others will look past this one. Prior to this review, our overall reviews were above satisfactory, on average as > 4.7. This review is devastating to our small business and company, and we are saddened by the circumstances causing the issues. I think it is fair to say we cannot please everyone. I suspect no matter what we did, or how the place looked, you would have found something to complain about to game the system looking for a refund. Even the Costco laundry dryer sheets used were unacceptable. Sure, there are a few reviews the place needs more cleaning in certain areas, we acknowledge and validate each one, and continue to work on bettering our property for our renters – this is a family run small business and we truly love sharing the lodge with others, but also admit, it is not for everyone. Due to the location of the property, backed into and built on the side of a forest filled, rocky mountain, there will be rustic features that MOST enjoy, not all. We accept that. Another member of your party commented on what a beautiful house it was. You stated that you “suffer from allergies and are super sensitive to dust of any kind”. Given this condition and that you stated you were out of the lodge all day Saturday, we believe other conditions contributed to your rash. We have NEVER had anyone suggest an accusation that the lodge is so filthy a rash developed. We are not denying your rash, and sorry it complicated the weekend, but we doubt the lodge was responsible for your rash particularly given you were actually there plus the mechanics we experienced of your overall complaints. the few hours you were actually there and the mechanics we experienced of your overall complaints. Please know this your review has gutted us and we have taken the feedback incredibly to heart. We put a plan of action in place as we are ALWAYS striving to improve. We are always willing to listen to negative comment/feedback regarding our property and do our best to make sure it never happens again. Our renters are important to us and are our livelihood. We hope prospective renters reading Spirit Dancer reviews will understand this interaction and communications was a unique experience, and being the first one like this in over 15 years of renting. We hope that you will continue to consider Spirit Dancer and give us a chance for your vacation needs.

Great place overall

Overall we really enjoyed our time here. Gorgeous property, great kitchen, and comfortable living room. Fairly easy to access the activities in the region, and close enough to what Sperryville has to offer. The place was extremely easy to access and the host was responsive. There were quite a few electrical issues in the house -- lamps didn't turn on, and the air hockey table didn't work. We had 8 adults and it would have been tricky to fit more. Updating the house rules etc would probably minimize additional questions, since there were a few that have changed to better benefit guests.

A little slice of heaven near the mountains!

This is our second stay at Spirit Dancer and I can't recommend it enough! We come up for the hiking (old Rag, White Oak Canyon) and the mountains but we're also finding it hard to leave the property!! The setting feels so private and remote though you're just not far from restaurants and other activities. It has a lovely rustic feel BUT is very luxurious! We loved the foosball and air hockey, coffee on the back deck, dinner prep in the large and well stocked kitchen and the comfy beds. The ease of communication from our host Darden also makes this a favorite place for us. We enjoyed a spectacular storm with a very brief area wide power outage, and Darden, kept us well informed on the status from the power company! We look forward to continuing this family tradition and coming back in 2024!

Nice house but could use some improvements/upgrades

Rented Spirit Dancer for a long weekend of hiking in SNP. There were 14 adults and while the house had sleeping arrangements for that many people, we needed more linens. Property is beautiful with spectacular views, nice hiking around the property, close proximity to SNP and we saw a bear daily as we looked out the front window. There are also many things to do in the area in addition to hiking. The kitchen and dining area easily accommodated our large group with enough dishes, silverware, pots & pans, etc... The oven only had 1 rack ( not the customary 2) so that was a bit of a problem, but we managed. The hot tub was wonderful after a long day of hiking. Nice entertainment options with a large screen TV downstairs and stereo/ CD player upstairs. Darden provides clear instructions on how to operate them as well. Not real happy that we needed to wash, dry and fold all the linens prior to our departure or pay a $150 laundry fee as most rentals I have used before do the laundry for you and that is included in the fees. I'd rate it 3.5 stars given that and the needed upgrades.

Spectacular Indeed!

Returned home yesterday after a fantastic week at Spirit Dancer. The house is absolutely gorgeous, architecture-wise, decor-wise and location-wise. We were 9 adults and 2 tweens. Plenty of space for all of us to hang out together and have quiet time alone when wanted. ("Sleeps 15" says the site, and that's totally doable, but our group of 11 maxed out the private sleeping spaces, so 4 extra would mean doubling up in the downstairs bedroom or sauna/futon room or sleeping on couches, which would be totally fine for a family or group of friends that doesn't need some "alone space" like my family does). The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans and a couple of drip coffee makers. I don't know if it's always the case, but we had fundamentals (salt & pepper and various spices, paper towels, toilet paper, a few garbage bags, washing machine tablets, dish soap, laundry detergent and coffee filters) waiting for us when we arrived. We stopped at the Walmart in Culpeper on the way to stock the fridge which was a good idea because, although the Little Country Store in Etlan - 5 min down the road - has ALL the basics (and great deli sandwiches for such a small place!), they close at 7:30 p.m. and we arrived later. From the house within short drives we explored the Luray Caverns, Monticello & the Frontier Museum in Staunton and drove part of Skyline Drive (part of our group got very close up to bears!). We were there for VA record high heat and humidity which wasn't the house's fault, so our outdoor time was impacted b/c we were sweating to death, but on the + side, the AC in the house was perfect! Some of us braved the heat and did a few hikes and enjoyed the hot tub and our tweens enjoyed "catch and release" of small frogs (toads?) and tadpoles they found on the trails and in pools around the house. We also completed 2 complex (monochrome! 550 and 1000 piece) puzzles as a group on the coffee table in the living room, 1 we brought and 1 we found in the extensive board game/puzzle room in the basement. On July 4th we grilled burgers on the gas grill and made s'mores on the wood grill and enjoyed watching the fireworks display from neighboring farms. As others have said, there is no WIFI and no cell signal, so if you want a luxurious but down-to-earth place to spend some well-deserved time disconnecting from your emails and Facebook and don't mind driving a few miles to place a call, I highly recommend the Spirit Dancer Lodge!!

Beautiful Setting & Convenient to SNP

The house was great accommodations for our extended family: 6 adults & 4 young children. It’s a beautiful mountain house in an isolated, beautiful rural setting ; yet a very convenient 20 to 30 minute drive to Shenandoah National Park. The house has everything you need for a family stay (just need to bring your own coffee & paper towels; & matches if you want to make a fire in the fireplace - we left these 3 items for the next guests’ convenience). Everything was clean & worked well. The only issue we had was that the downstairs bathroom had a foul odor, like a decaying animal perhaps stuck in the walls. We called the owner about this; left a voicemail message but never heard back from her. Otherwise it was a great family retreat which we highly recommend.

Great cabin!

We had a great time at Darden’s place!! I booked the cabin for my sisters bachelorette weekend, and it was everything we wanted! While it rained the entire weekend, it was so cozy and we were more than happy to spend the day sitting by the fire. Everyone had such a great time and we would love to come back for another trip.

Wonderful great room. Kids loved the air hockey table in basement , and firepit.outside. My grandson caught 4 bass in the pond. Only negative is that the recommended nature hike path from house was overgrown and not usable for us.

Great Place!

This house is amazing, huge and very remote which is great for a quiet get away. The home had plenty of activity options as well. The only drawback was the WiFi was slow when we were all using it and it didn’t work throughout the entire house that well but I suspect the WiFi will improve soon! Highly recommend this home and we wished we could’ve stayed longer!

Beautiful setting, dated description, subpar upkeep

The location was breathtakingly beautiful, from inside through massive windows and outside from the large deck. This home was clearly well loved in the past, but not so much now. Lacking in attention to detail (propane tank ran out quickly; no extra tank, big tv screen was disconnected and remotes had no batteries, no umbrella for patio table, a bathroom sink was clogged, hiking trail was overgrown so inaccessible). Very dim lighting in all rooms, one of which had no windows or ventilation. Cushions would have made the metal outdoor chairs more comfortable. Maybe not the best choice if you have toddlers as there are large cactuses and a beautiful jagged stone table to beware of.

Perfect retreat for Shenandoah access

My 4 adult kids and I came to the mountains for some hiking! We chose Spirit-Dancer Lodge for its location and beautiful great room. The pictures don’t do it justice! It’s close enough for easy access to nearby towns and restaurants but set far enough in that you leave all that behind. We had plenty of space, comfortable beds, and a wonderful Sauna after Old Rag Hike!!! The outdoor deck was a wonderful surprise - bigger than expected and a great place to listen to night sounds from the surrounding trees or have morning coffee. Check in was easy and communication with Darden quick! We will be back!!!

Wine Tour weekend

We had 2 other couples join us for a 4 day weekend wine trip. The cabin we rented was perfectly located for this trip. We traveled south one day north another and spent another day at a small town event featuring wine tasting. The cabin has an open floor plan for everyone to be together and enjoy lots of conversation and fun times. Very private setting in the mountain lots of room for hiking or just kicking back on the large deck and relaxing. Will definitely do it again.

Fun & Fabulous 30th Birthday Weekend Get Together

The Spirit Dancer cabin was the perfect weekend getaway for my 30th birthday celebration with all my closest friends (and their partners) from my middle/high school and college days 😃 I highly recommend this property to those who want to do an intimate gathering with your loved ones for the weekend (or longer 🤓)! Thanks again to Darden for being an awesome property manager and answering my numerous questions as I was planning my birthday bash. I can’t wait to stay here again one day in the future for another big milestone celebration 🎉

We will built this property with our bare hands over some years, mostly just weekends, while traveling back to the DC area for work during the week. The rocks that are displayed, especially on the incredible fireplace, are all from the property! This is a lodge with a lot of love, sweat and some tears put into it and we are so excited to share it with you!
