5 min. to Apsley
Officially, the body of water immediately south of Apsley, Ontario, is named Jack Lake. However, older and long-term lake residents and their families refer to it possessively as Jack’s Lake. This distinctive name has roots in the local Native chief "Handsome Jack," who passed away in 1835. Interestingly, his English name might have been a somewhat sarcastic reference to his possible less-than-pleasing appearance.
Spanning approximately 3013 acres with a maximum depth of 140 feet, Jack Lake is nestled within the Peterborough Game Preserve. This preserve stands as one of the last bastions of protected, untouched land in the cottage country, providing an ideal habitat for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking tranquility in a picturesque Canadian Shield environment adorned with towering pines and granite outcrops.
Jack Lake is particularly renowned for its diverse fishing opportunities, boasting catches of muskie, bass, walleye, trout, and black crappie. The lake's allure extends beyond its angling appeal, inviting nature lovers to revel in the abundance of deer and the unspoiled beauty that characterizes this pristine region.
