Beautiful Private Lake Michigan Beach House

This is a unique 4,250 sq ft 1940's cottage on a low bluff that has been completely updated, expanded and renovated to maintain the feel of the original
property. It is 'on the beach' with 160 feet of lakefront - three times the size of most of the properties in this beautiful enclave of Manistee. Located 4 miles from downtown Manistee, this cottage is it's own slice of heaven.....very private and lovely.

There is a gourmet kitchen, beautiful original stone fireplace that is used year round, and the grounds are spectacular. Large front (Lakeside) patio is perfect for a late evening bbque and sunset. The back (street side) patio is perfect for coffee while the sun comes up. There are hiking trails within walking distance. Great biking routes and you can even bike into town. Currently, because of the high water levels, we have sandy cove instead of endless walkable beachand we have a massive seawall which has a very large sandy area with a firepit and seating. This is a private seawall for our property. There is easy accessibility to our private beach cove. And there are large beaches at both of the public beaches in town with playgrounds. This is the perfect getaway for a family.

This is a private home - It is smoke free and pets free. We do
not accept large groups who just want to have a party house - we
are respectful of our neighbors and we request our renters to
maintain a peaceful decorum. Please no fireworks and ensure that the beach fire is completly out before leaving the beach.

Annual Family get together

Loved the location on the beach. There are plenty of gathering spaces in the house. We painted rocks, went for walks on the beach.

This is by far the most wonderful place we have ever stayed. Very spacious. It has vestiges of old lake cottage charm with modern amenities especially in the newer addition of the home. The home has a wonderful view of lake Michigan, while the shade trees protect you from the sun if you remain close to the house. A very charming vacation place.

Annual Manistee vacation

The property was amazing, it was spacious, yet cozy. There was a lot of room for everyone to spread out, and then gather in the large dining/family room making it perfect for family time. The beach was wonderful as well. We were blessed to have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights one night we were there. It was an ideal vacation, can't wait until next year.

Perfect week!

My family and I had the most amazing time at this property. I have been traveling and staying at rental units for 15 years and this was by far the most enjoyable stay. The property had everything we needed and then some, communication with the host was excellent and we felt at home from the moment we arrived. Highly recommended!!

Amazing experience!

The house was so well suited to our family. The beach, right outside the back door, was amazing! We enjoyed swimming in Lake Michigan, watching beautiful sunsets, and bonfires on the beach. It was a wonderful family vacation, and we’ve booked it again for next year! Jill Sperling was very friendly, and attentive to our needs.

Well beyond my expectations

There is so much here that they couldn't fit it in the description. The owner is open and giving of her time, and guidance/tips on the area. I didn't want to leave.

Lots of room for all

We had a great week with an extended family of 8 people. We had plenty of room to have puzzles games and reading spaces. The kitchen is really well equipped for people who like to cook and bake. While there is no beach now there are lots of outdoor spaces to enjoy the lake views, and plenty of lawn for outdoor games. Everyone loved the homey feel of the house. The owners were very responsive before and during our visit.

Fantastic Stay!!

Our stay was phenomenal! The house was large enough to accommodate 6 adults and 3 kids with plenty of room to spare. There were plenty of bathrooms and the kitchen was fully stocked with whatever you’d need to prepare a meal. The outside was perfect for yard games and the large, private beach was just steps away. You can’t get any closer to the beach! We spent our vacation climbing dunes, another rafting and a couple afternoons downtown Manistee for shopping and dinner. The rest of the time was swimming and enjoying the beach. Jill was so great to work with and so, so very kind. I would highly recommend this place! As a matter of fact, we requested to come back again next year!

great family vacation

We would suggest more paper supplies. We ran out of toilet paper and paper towels. Also, increase the number of washcloths provided. Jill was very accommodating with our every concern. Took prompt action on the ant issue and the dryer, too. Access to the beach was very tricky for senior citizens and small children. I believe new steps are being installed with a new breakwall. Great place for a family vacation.

Hi Alice Thanks for your review. We took note on an increase in paper products. Also - yes, ants have been a problem this year and I'm glad our exterminator was able to address it quickly for you. Mother Nature is a bit crazy this year so the beach is hit and miss. Glad you were able to enjoy the house, the property and Manistee.

Absolutely perfect family vacation

Adorable home with plenty of space for our large family of 12. There are 2 large family rooms, and huge dining room table for everyone to eat together. The photos are a little tough to determine the layout but it was perfect for extended families. Everyone had their own space. The home is older, with lots of charm. Beds were incredibly comfortable. The absolute GEM is the property!! Huge well taken care of yard, sandy beaches just about 9 steps down. We rented a kayak, spent lots of time outside. Very very sad our trip was over because this place is MAGIC. One side note that would absolutely not deter our stay, the water in showers and sink, laundry is brownish in color and odor. Well water perhaps? Just make sure to stock up on bottled water and dont bring lightly colored nice clothing or towels. Thank you Jill fir sharing your home with us!!! Memories made!

Thank you so much for your review Sara. We have a water softner that uses salt to eliminate the tanins in the water and it either wasn't full enough with salt or wasn't working properly. Housekeeping sent me some pics of the discolored shower and sink and I have addressed this. Thanks for pointing it out. This is the first year since we put in the softner that this has happend and it will be resolved. Looking forward to you visiting us in the future. Warm regards, Jill

A little slice of heaven on the lake

Like a lot of VRBO properties I've rented, the pictures have a hard time doing this property justice. I've rented a lot of properties with private beaches over the years, but this one is only 8-steps right off the backyard! Perfect for kids and nice for adults to casually move back and forth between the house and beach. The house sits right on the lake making for spectacular views inside and out. The sunsets are incredible and were an important part of our nightly routine. The lawn is ample with beautiful landscaping. Because the house was added on-to over time, it makes for a nice split if you have multiple families and quiet spaces for little ones. Even with 3 families, it never felt crowded The house is lived in by the owners and that really makes a huge different for providing a comfortable stay. Ample outdoor beach seating, a fully stocked kitchen with proper cooking tools, cleaning supplies, laundry equipment supplies are all just a few example of why this is a difference-maker compared to houses that only host renters. The area offers access to some great activities like hikes in Arcadia/Sleeping Bear, Portage and Bear Lakes, a blueberry farm and Alpaca farm for the little ones closer to Ludington.

Gorgeous Lake Michigan home

The best place we’ve stayed at in all of our vacations! Although access to the lake was such that you wouldn’t swim there on a wavy day, the private beach, property and home were wonderful! Also a short trip to downtown and other beaches. Very nice owner, too!

beautiful house in a beautiful spot

This house overlooking lake Michigan is comfortable, gorgeous and fun. This is the perfect spot for two families- bedrooms on opposite sides of the house and wonderful kitchen and living room/dining room to gather during the day.

Wonderful Lakefront Property

We escaped the Covid craziness with a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable family stay at Jill's lakefront cottage with our two adult daughters and their husbands. Jill is a wonderful host and she was accessible and accommodating. The cottage itself is charming and well maintained. Everything you need is there, from a well-stocked kitchen to cozy furnishings to beautiful sunsets and cooling breezes. The location is ideal - just north of Manistee. So close enough for shopping, and golf but far enough to feel removed and quiet. Thank you Jill for letting us enjoy your place, the family time together was cathartic and just what we all needed.

The best family vacation ever!!

We rented this lovely lake cottage for a family vacation to celebrate my husband's and my 50th wedding anniversary. It was a fabulous week from swimming and paddle boarding in front of the cottage, trips to the 1st street beach, tether ball tournaments, canoe trips on the Manistee and all out great fun!! I cannot say enough good things about the owner, Jill Sperling. She went out of her way to make us feel welcome and gave us numerous tips on the best beaches, bike trails and how best to navigate the newly constructed sea wall in front of the house. She is just an all out wonderful person!! We will be talking about this vacation for many years. Just sad that it is over and that the time went way too fast!!! We plan to return sometime in the future. The whole family is enamored with the Great Lakes!!!

wonderful all around

This was a perfect place for our two families to spend a fun week. The property is spacious and lovely, with many things to do. The house is charming, well-equipped, and offers many different sleeping options. The location is ideal--peaceful and on the lake but close to public beaches and shopping. Jill, the owner, was incredibly responsive and helpful. She went out of her way to make the week special for our kids and all of us.

We felt complete at home on the lake

We would go back again and for longer than the seven nights we stayed. The house and yard were comfortable and supported our love of cooking. We had two families with kids from 3-13. There were great spaces for us all to be together, for kid zones, and to still find quiet nooks. Loved the games available in the house too. Even better than we expected from the listing.

This home is more beautiful than the photos. The house is right on the lake, is beautiful and very large. It has everything you could possibly need for a family - and more. We are grateful to have had such a wonderful place to stay.

We all love Michigan - Jill grew up in Manistee and then moved to NY in 1985 and then with her husband Skip, to Los Angeles in 1989. Buying this home in 2001 has allowed us to give our children unique summer experiences as Jill had growing up in this beautiful Victorian town. We have been able to spend summers on the shore of Lake Michigan since purchasing this home

The Cottage was built in 1947 and the original space remains the same with a few renovations. As our family grew, and friends started to visit, we enlarged the space to include additional bedrooms and bathrooms. This not only created extra space but special private areas for reading, resting and playing games.

We hope you will enjoy The Cottage and give your families the same summer experiences and form memories as we have.

Jill grew up in Manistee and loved being on Lake Michigan and enjoyed the beaches all summer long. We wanted a place to get our family out of the city and be close to family and friends during the summer. This is a unique property with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the fresh air, beautiful sunsets and family.

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

Relaxation, beautiful sunsets, great friends and family near by. The city of Manistee is charming with lovely Victorian storefronts, good food and a beautiful river walk. We love to venture into town, however, we hardly leave the property because we have all we need to keep us relaxed and occupied. There is a swingset, tetherball, and basketball court on the property. Plus lots of wildlife, including deer, eagles, raccoons, lots of birds and sometimes fox. We always have a pet toad and frog show up to catch the knats.
