Álafoss played a major role in the wool industry in Iceland starting in 1896 and still producing wool under the name Istex . The wool factory was both economically and socially important as workers came from all over Iceland to work and that created a colourful community with dances, indoor swimming pool and outdoor theatre.

Now the old factory buildings are occupied by the Álafoss wool factory store, restaurant, Sundlaugin (swimming pool) which was converted to a Recording Studio by the well known band Sigur Rós, artists- and crafts studios.
