A Mt. Hood Chalet in the Heart of Government Camp — Steps from the Slopes, Close to Everything
Government Camp sits at 3,900 feet at the base of Mt. Hood, and there aren't many places in Oregon where the mountain feels this close. This two-level chalet is positioned right in the village — Summit Ski Area is walkable, Timberline Lodge is a short drive up the hill, and Mt. Hood Meadows is within easy reach on the other side of the mountain. In winter, you can be on snow within minutes of waking up. In summer, the same roads that are packed with ski traffic open up to some of the best hiking, lake access, and mountain biking in the Pacific Northwest. This is a home that earns its keep in every season.
The Home The layout across two levels gives the group room to spread out without the space feeling disconnected. The main level centers on a comfortable dining and living area — the natural place to reconvene after a day outside, share a meal, and wind down before doing it again tomorrow. The fully equipped kitchen handles everything from a quick breakfast before first chair to a full dinner after a long day on the trails. There's no need to build every meal around whatever's open in the village.
Upstairs, a second living area gives the group a separate space for movies, games, and late evenings. The entertainment setup here is genuinely good — TV, DVD player, Wii system, stereo, a library of board games and movies, and a book collection for the mornings when the plan is to do absolutely nothing. WiFi is available when you want it, easy to ignore when you don't. A washer and dryer round out the practical side of things, which matters on longer trips or when ski clothes need a refresh before the next morning.
The bedroom is positioned off the upstairs living area behind its own door, giving it real separation and privacy from the rest of the group. A private balcony off the bedroom is the right place for morning coffee with mountain air and no particular agenda.
Outside The spacious yard shifts with the seasons — summer means lawn games, picnics, and a backyard that's warm enough to use. Winter means sledding and snowball fights and the particular satisfaction of being outside in fresh snow when you don't have anywhere to be. Government Camp gets real snowfall, and the yard captures it well.

A Few Things to Know This home is available to guests 21 and older. The bedroom is separated from the upstairs living area by its own door. There is no air conditioning — standard for mountain homes at this elevation, and rarely needed given Government Camp's climate. Summers here are cool and comfortable; a light layer in the evenings is the norm even in July.
