Stunning Views, close to Wineries, Primland & Parkway - beautifully appointed
Tsuga on the Ridge offers the classic mountain vacation escape… Beautiful, expansive views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Rock Castle Gorge below are enjoyed from this well-appointed, secluded mountain top vacation home on seven acres. The home borders National Forest land providing plenty of privacy and and has a large 3 acre open mowed yard area, perfect for kids and dogs to run and play.
Tsuga on the Ridge is the only home directly adjoining the forested and protected Rocky Knob Recreation Area and on Rock Castle Gorge, rewarding guests with pristine, undeveloped views of Rock Castle Gorge, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Rocky Knob from the home, yard or deck overlooking the gorge. Tsuga on the Ridge is the perfect home base to explore the network of Rocky Knob Recreation Area hiking trails.
Tsuga on the Ridge was the summer home of Burke Davis – an award-winning southern journalist, novelist, and nonfiction writer. He was best known for his popular war histories and biographies. He and his lovely wife Juliet Burnett Davis “re-claimed” two 1800s vintage log cabins, using them as bedroom wings of the modern central home. The kitchen, living and dining areas, one guest bedroom and bathrooms are located in the new construction which joins the two cabins.
As you step inside your eyes are immediately drawn to the wall of sliding glass doors. Sweeping mountain views take your breath away. The stars at night are incredible. The wide plank heart pine flooring and vaulted ceiling create an inviting space for family and friends to enjoy watching TV with surround sound or playing board games late into the night. There is a well-equipped galley kitchen, and numerous cookbooks to read. The Master bedroom in the Master cabin overlooks the Blue Ridge Parkway. The room is furnished with family antiques and a king sized bed covered in lovely linens. The hand hewn logs of the cabin add to the ambiance. A guest bedroom with a queen size bed is located off the hallway which joins the guest cabin to the central living area. The guest cabin has a downstairs bedroom with twin beds. A hidden stair case leads to the fourth bedroom, perfect for kids and located on the second floor of the guest cabin. This bedroom is appointed with twin beds, antiques and art from a renowned regional artist.
The beauty of the Blue Ridge may be appreciated from anywhere on this mountain top escape. Guests may also enjoy picking blueberries, hiking to the top of the High Hill (at 3400 feet the highest point in Patrick County) or fishing at nearby Three Ponds. (All are owned by the Tsuga on the Ridge owners.) A lower deck provides a spectacular setting for an al fresco dinner overlooking Rock Castle Gorge.
Offsite activities include breakfast at Mabry Mill, hiking the numerous trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting Rocky Knob, dining at Chateau Morsette, sipping wine at Villa Appalaccia Winery, zip lining at Buffalo Mountain Ziplines, gazing at Lover’s Leap or indulging at Nancy’s Candy Factory. Sobre o anfitrião
Anfitrião: Clara Miles

Tsuga on the Ridge is owned by Brian and Clara Miles of Niceville, Florida. The mountain property has been in Brian’s family since 1956 when Brian’s Grandfather, the late Oscar W. Burnett of Greensboro, North Carolina bought the land to build a cabin for weekend retreats with his family. His criteria for the summer retreat was that the property be above 3000 feet elevation, with natural creek or springs to support the construction of one or more ponds and within a two hour drive from his Greensboro home. Oscar Burnett died in 1970 and Judy remarried Burke Davis, an award winning author of over 40 books, in 1982. Burke’s love of the outdoors led to an almost immediate desire to live part of the year with Judy in the mountains. Noting that the cozy 540 square foot weekend cabin at Three Ponds wasn’t big enough for extended living, Burke and Judy set about designing and building a new mountain top home. Burke wanted the design to reflect the marriage of old and new, and the home reflects that. After significant searching, Burke found and purchased three 1800’s vintage log cabins in North Carolina, had them disassembled, parts numbered and carefully reassembled and re-chinked on the mountain top as bedroom wings of the central modern living space of Tsuga on the Ridge. While in college, Brian and Clara visited Three Ponds and Tsuga on the Ridge numerous times. Judy and Burke lived at Tsuga most summers where Burke wrote several books. After Burke’s death in 2006 Judy continued to enjoy Tsuga on the Ridge with family and friends. After Judy’s death in 2011 at age 97, her son Tim cared for the property until Brian and Clara bought it in December 2013. We are committed to preserving this beautiful home and its grounds for our families and are very pleased to share it with others. We hope that you have a wonderful experience at Tsuga on the Ridge and come to love it as we do! Check out: https://youtu.be/gSZsY4JB4C4?si=GriIH87T-r3zMpkB
Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade
Tsuga on the Ridge is special for many reasons. The property has been in our family since the 1950s, and it backs up to land owned by the United States Forest Service. The main living and dining areas of the home look due North towards Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Parkway – simply stunning views. Burke’s and Judy’s vision to take two vintage log cabins and use them as the “anchors” for the house combine the best of two worlds – authentic cabin feel with modern amenities. Set on 7 secluded acres you feel like the world is a million miles away, yet just a short drive away to shopping and dining. See how beautiful and private the property is
O que faz essa propriedade ser única?
Mixes authentic log cabins with the latest comfort and conveniences on a large, very private lot with killer views!
