Property Summary Old Malthouse in Monksilver (Somerset) sleeps up to 5 guests; it's situated in this idyllic village on the edge of Exmoor National Park and only 3 miles from the coast. Old Malthouse self-catering holiday cottage provides the perfect base from which to explore Exmoor and surrounding areas.
Main Description The Old Malthouse sits in the heart of the village, within a few moments walk of the highly rated Notley Arms public house which serves freshly prepared and locally sourced foods, along with a selection of Somerset’s finest ales, beers and ciders. There are a number of designated footpaths close to the property including the famous Coleridge Way. In 1583 Sir Francis Drake was married in the village church which is now a Grade 1 listed building.
Sleeps up to 5 guests in three bedrooms Two double beds and one single bedroom Sitting room with large inglenook fireplace and wood-burner Modern kitchen with dining table Courtyard with chairs just outside the kitchen door Private garden (not enclosed) situated across the quiet road Off road parking area for two cars Easy walking distance to local pub with restaurant Fabulous area for walking, the Coleridge Way passes through the village Dogs welcome (2 max) for £15 supplement per dog Wifi, heating and electricity included Towels and bed linen provided Arrival from 4 pm Depart by 10 am
On record as early as 1737 as a working malt house supplying malt to the local area, the property is full of character whilst benefiting from recent refurbishment. The focal point of the sitting room must be the inglenook fireplace and log burner for extra warmth after a busy day exploring. In warmer weather, guests can spend their evenings outside in the private courtyard garden or on the small lawn adjacent to the private gravelled parking area across the quiet road. There are three bedrooms, two double (with built-in wardrobes) and one single, ensuring that the cottage sleeps up to 5 guests in comfort. The bathroom upstairs has a bath, powerful “rainfall†shower, toilet, hand basin, large heated towel rail and illuminated mirror.
Private off-road parking is available for two vehicles on the gravelled area opposite the side entrance to the property (across the quiet single-track road).
The Old Malthouse is strictly non-smoking.
Local amenities The centre of Williton is a 3 mile drive from Old Malthouse. As well as hosting the Bakelite Museum and one of the stations on the West Somerset Steam Railway, this small town also boasts a cafe, two supermarkets, a number of public houses, a library, hairdressers, fish and chip shop, pizzeria, petrol station and Post Office amongst other businesses. Minehead is the main town in West Somerset, and sits around 10 miles from the Old Malthouse. Here you will find the larger supermarkets and petrol stations (Tesco and Morrisons are both on the outskirts of the town), most major high street banks with cash machines, plus a range of other shops.
Arrival and departure The Old Malthouse is available for week-long bookings and short breaks. The cottage will be ready from 4 pm on the day you arrive. Please depart by 10 am on the last day of your stay. Please leave the property clean and tidy so that we can guarantee it will be ready on time for our next guests.
Indoor Description The kitchen/dining room is fitted with a halogen hob, electric oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, microwave, kettle, and toaster. There is a full complement of saucepans, kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery and glasses. In the sitting-room guests can enjoy a 32†LED TV with built in DVD and Freeview channels. Wireless broadband is available throughout the cottage. A high chair can be made available, please request this at time of booking. There is ample space in the main bedroom for guests to put up a travel cot if required (cot is not provided). There is no stair gate in place at this property and the stairs are characteristically uneven, we suggest that if a child is unable to hold on to banister then The Old Malthouse would not be suitable for them - sorry.
Electricity and heating costs are included in the price of your accommodation. The Old Malthouse has electric storage heating, with individually adjustable radiators. There is also a log burner in the sitting room and a complimentary supply of logs, kindling and firelighters to get you started. Further logs can be purchased locally if required.
Bed linen, duvets, blankets and towels are provided, but please bring your own beach towels if you require them for day trips.
You will find tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper, toilet rolls, kitchen paper and cleaning materials in the cottage. Also a bottle of wine to prove your holiday has begun.
Outdoor Description There is a lawned garden opposite the cottage (across a small quiet road), the garden is not enclosed.
The village of Monksilver sits on the edge of the Brendon Hills and the Exmoor National Park and is also close to the coast. There is plenty to do for walkers, tourists and families alike.
Why not visit Cleeve Abbey (2.7 miles), the historic house of Coombe Sydenham (0.25 miles), or Dunster Castle and its historic village (7.9 miles). You could plan a ride on the West Somerset Steam Railway ….. or visit Europe’s first International dark sky reserve at the Stargazing Dark Sky Reserve.
With such a wonderful natural environment this is also a great place for enjoying the great outdoors!
There are many beaches in the area where visitors may enjoy swimming, kite flying, windsurfing, or simply relaxing with a bucket and spade. Exmoor National Park also hosts the Exmoor Cycle Route and Exmoor Forest which is a former royal hunting ground, where horse riders can experience some of the best riding in the country.
Parking The private off-road parking area is on the left side of the road in the entrance to the garden area, opposite the side entrance to the property. Please do not park in the parking area beside the cottage, as this is the neighbour’s drive.
Pets Description Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement (maximum of 2) for a supplementary fee of £15 per dog. Please do not allow your dogs on the furniture or upstairs and do not leave them alone in the property at any time. Bookings with 3 dogs will be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the size/breeds of the dogs and the duration of your stay, please get in touch to ask and we can check with the owner for you. The region
Monksilver is a quiet village on the eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, tucked between the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills in West Somerset.
Despite its name, the silver has nothing to do with precious metal -- it comes from the Latin 'silva', meaning woodland, so the village is really 'Monk's Wood'.
The village has its own welcoming pub, The Notley Arms Inn, which serves award-winning food and local ales. The neighbouring village of Stogumber is two miles away and has a community-run shop and Post Office, while the town of Williton is three miles away with two small supermarkets, a petrol station, cash machines, restaurants, a butcher, pharmacy, and hardware store.
Minehead is approximately ten miles away and has larger supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons, high street banks, and a broader range of shops. Taunton, the county town of Somerset, is roughly 14 miles south and offers a full range of supermarkets and amenities. Both Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver grocery shopping to this area.
Monksilver sits within Exmoor's International Dark Sky Reserve -- the first in Europe -- making it an outstanding location for stargazing on clear nights. The Brendon Hills, Quantock Hills, and the Somerset coast are all within easy reach by car.

Really enjoyed our stay,so peaceful and relaxing. We were out every day and the weather was really kind to us considering it was January. The notley arms pub was literally a 30 second walk away which served great food, and Caroline and Simon were great hosts. On the whole was a lovely location and cottage. Would love to know a bit more history about the cottage and village.
