  • A Great Vacation

"We had a lovely and relaxing stay at this beautiful home. It was the perfect staging point for day trips to Acadia, Deer Island and Schoodic. We enjoyed sightseeing in Castine, particularly the historic landmarks pertaining to the Penobscot Expedition. The Castine Visitor Center was a wealth of information and the person I spoke with was very knowledgeable about the area. The Plein Air Festival was in progress while we were there, an opportunity for invited artists to paint local scenery for 3 days, culminating in a juried art exhibit, A fundraiser for the local arts organization. We also visited and swam Wadsworth Cove , a local swim beach and were delighted to watch someone parasailing. You can walk, bike or kayak to most everything in Castine. There is a Windmill Hill gardens and grocery by the golf course, where you can get tasty ingredients for an impromptu meal or the local market a 2 minute walk from the house. The house is cozy and welcoming, kitchen is well appointed to cook in, a great library of literary fiction, history , classic and contemporary fiction. We had ongoing games of Cribbage and Monopoly. We felt really special and lucky to stay in a beautiful place as Castine in such a cool house."

  • Outstanding!

"Ms. Tonry's house is a wonderful and warm representation of the old homes in Castine. It's charm surrounds you, created by beautiful antique furniture and rugs. At just one block off Main Street and one block off the water, the location is perfect, especially for our two boys who jumped on their bikes and rode everywhere. We had everything we could possibly need in the the kitchen for cooking family meals as well as everything we needed in the house for our two week stay. I highly recommend this property."

  • Amenities, location, and waterfront view couldn't be better!

"Peregrine Cottage was totally satisfying in every way. The house is comfortably and attractively furnished with everything we could have possibly needed, and there's a water view from every room on the three floors. Additionally, the ground floor patio, fire pit and yard seating, deck, and lovely sunroom allow guests to take full advantage of the beautiful view. and the sunsets are incredible! We stopped for a few rolls of toilet paper on the way from the airport, just to get us by before we could shop the next day for other basic supplies--salt and pepper, paper towels, plastic wrap, soap, etc. We needn't have worried---the kitchen, pantry, bathrooms, and laundry room were well stocked to meet all our needs. Of course we supplied our own food, but the cupboard had salt and pepper, herbs and spices, and other items we were invited to use, as well as cereal and milk as an emergency stopgap before shopping. While a small and pricy market is in nearby Castine, a full supermarket is thirty minutes away, encouraging careful planning ahead. The location is ideal for short day trips to neighboring villages, islands, and Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. Lots of really pretty countryside scenery--well-kept farms and residences, small towns, wooded areas, and water in one form or another everywhere. We visited Fort Hood, the Blue HIll County Fair, and other varied attractions, but the town of Castine turned out to be our favorite town; it's really pretty with lots of historical sites to explore. Just one note in case it matters: bedrooms are on ground and third floor, meaning it's necessary to use stairs either up or down. (Living and dining areas and kitchen are on first floor, between the two floors with bedrooms.) This wasn't an issue for us, but could be to some. There's a full bath on each of three floors. We were two couples, and each couple had a bedroom with a full bath (and more beds than the four of us needed). We have only praise for Peregrine Cottage and its most hospitable and gracious owner, who wanted to verify that we had everything we needed. Our stay was just great, and we appreciate Mary Lou's sharing her family's lovely waterfront cottage!"
