  • Bucolic Interlude

"We were looking for a place to meet with friends for a 3 day excursion and happened upon this beautiful 1820 farmhouse near Lexington, Va. This charming house has been kept true to its history, with some added features, such as a back porch and deck, a/c, etc. A long winding gravel road takes you through a working farm and the cows and other animals until you reach this gorgeous house. The house, itself, is well appointed, with just about everything you can think of that you'd need; then there is the artwork and historical certificates and plaques hanging on the walls of all rooms; and the views are amazing. For the more adventurous, there is an 1850 cemetery across the parking area and up the hill, but you have to scale a fence and make your way through the cows to get to it. The location is just about perfect, half way between Natural Bridge and Lexington. Every evening we enjoyed our cocktail hour while sitting on the back porch looking at the birds and animals and the grand vistas. We want to thank the owners and especially, Joyce, who made our stay so welcoming. As another reviewer mentioned, there are notes all over the house, explaining switches and other features to make it easy to stay there. Next time we come to Lexington, we will definitely try to stay here...again, thank you so much for allowing us the privilege of staying here."

  • Peaceful spacious house steps from the Shenandoah River

"My friends and I were looking for a comfy house on the river for a weekend trip and Shenandoah Stars was exactly that. The house is large and comfortable, clean, and modern. Most of our time was spent in the screened back porch, a nice covered space with a table, large grill, and hot tub. We didn't make a fire or use the hot tub. We enjoyed sitting on the stones by the river, watching fireflies in the evening and the view of the stars. We swam in the river during the day. We couldn't get the canoe padlock opened--it was stuck--but our host came right away and unlocked it. Super responsive. The house is close to Luray, which is convenient for an excursion to the caverns."

  • Great place

"Some friends and I booked this house for a gaming weekend get-together. The place is fantastic and the scenery is gorgeous - we went in August and the whole mountain was covered in ferns. Parking was great, there's a market a couple minutes down the road, and everything was very convenient. Clean, comfortable, plenty of hot water. The owner was very responsive and had great information throughout the whole booking experience."

  • Wonderful house, grounds, and location for family!

"My family stayed at this property with another family over July 4th weekend. All in all, we are two couples and four kids six and under. We had an amazing time and really look forward to making this an annual trip. Our kids keep asking to go back so we might need to schedule another visit sooner. The property grounds are fantastic. The vista from the Cottage is breathtaking. The landscaping all around the Cottage, the owners' house, and the rest of the property is lovely. We spent most of our time in the in ground pool and were pleased that pool toys and towels were plentiful. At night, we used the gas grill to BBQ and built a fire (with some difficulty!) in the patio firepit to roast smores. The kids loved roaming the grounds and visiting the various animals. After meals, they would visit the chickens to feed them leftovers, play with the owners' pets, or run around on the grass and catch fireflies. The outdoor layout is perfect for the letting the kids safely run around. There is playground equipment right outside of the Cottage as well as a good size field and chicken coop. Inside the Cottage, the owners' sense of style and thoughtfulness is clear. The house is stocked with toilet paper and soap (bring napkins, paper towels, etc.). The kitchen is stocked with plenty of dishes and basic cooking oils / spices. Everything was spotless. The beds, sheets, and towels were all comfy. As a previous reviewer notes, the Cottage has three bedrooms on one side of the house and a master bedroom (with bath) on the other side of the house. This worked well for our group. I should note that the third bedroom on the larger side of the house has a cut-out in the wall that faces the A/C unit on the stairwell. My three year old daughter slept in that room, which was a little difficult because the room is open to the stairwell (and living room below). We needed to turn off the lights on that side of the house (inside and out) so that my daughter's room would be dark and quiet enough. Small inconvenience only. Other than this, the place is very kid-friendly. The owners have a gaggle of grandkids who clearly spend a lot of time there. Our friends used the pack'-n-pack and we all enjoyed the children's books and game throughout the Cottage. All in all, this was an incredible vacation. The owners are very friendly. Highly recommended."
