Few experiences compare to a vacation in the world-renowned Boulders Resort. The Boulders Resort, part of the Waldorf Astoria collection, is ranked year-after-year by Conde Nast Traveler magazine as among the top resorts in the U.S.
It has won numerous other awards from AAA, Bon Appétit, Wine Spectator, and is one of only ten resorts in the U.S. to win Golf magazine’s Platinum Medal. When you rent our villa, the Boulders will allow you to use our membership to the Resort for a nominal fee (about $250/month.) This will allow you to use the Golden Door Spa’s fitness center, stunning outdoor pool, saunas and steam rooms, as well as participate (at no charge) in numerous daily exercise and wellness programs offered at the Spa. Individual spa treatments can be arranged at extra cost.
You also have use of the separate facilities at the members-only Boulders Club, including a large outdoor pool, tennis courts, fitness center, and two restaurants in the Clubhouse. With your visiting membership, golf on The Boulders two championship courses can be arranged at the best available rates. Of the 50+ vacation rentals listed on VRBO in Carefree, many reference The Boulders but typically only a few are actually in the Resort. If you have previously visited the area, you know it is in a class by itself.
The layout of this gated, very secure community positions the resort hotel (actually a series of 160 casitas and 60 villas), the Boulders Clubhouse, and the Golden Door Spa in roughly the center of the community. The two 18 hole golf courses fan out to the north and south with private homes surrounding the courses. Our single story villa home backs to the 4th hole of the north course. The 2600 square foot home with hardwood floors throughout has been recently remodeled and is tastefully furnished.
It features a Great Room with a beautiful southwestern-motif fireplace, a large dining area, 3 bedrooms (1 King, 1 Queen, 1 set of Twins), 3 en-suite baths (including a large Jacuzzi tub in the master), a den with a desk and sitting area, a good sized eat-in kitchen with a Sub Zero refrigerator and other high end appliances, a laundry room, and a 2 car garage. There are 3 flat screen TVs on cable and high speed internet (the house has a desktop PC with printer, or bring your own laptop and use the wireless.) The front patio has a sitting area with bee hive fireplace and nice desert views.
We are fortunate to have no homes behind us. The back patio features unobstructed views looking across the beautiful Sonoran desert and golf course toward the mountains. In the early morning and late afternoon, when the light in the desert is special, the views are memorable. The back yard has an ample-sized swimming pool. Although the backyard pool can be heated for an additional fee (cool nights in the winter impact pool heating costs), there is hardly a need: there’s a large heated neighborhood pool and in-ground spa just a 2 minute walk down at the end of the street (this is in addition to the large pools at the Golden Door and the Boulders Club.)
As you drive or walk around the resort community, be sure to take your camera because you’ll encounter one Kodak moment after another. The famous rock formations are magical, the cactus and desert landscape seem off the cover of the iconic Arizona Highways magazine, and there’s plenty of wildlife to watch…..whether a bobcat napping on somebody’s roof, a coyote or javelina (looks like a wild boar) ambling across the pristine desert, a family of quail running across the road, or a pair of hawks circling overhead.
You’ll find it easy to fill up your days. After a wake-up coffee on the back patio to admire the morning light on the mountains, maybe a 15 minute walk along an uncrowded back street with beautiful desert views to downtown Carefree (pop. 3800) for breakfast on the patio of one of the several cafes. Then perhaps a visit to the Golden Door to use the gym or participate in an exercise class (or maybe just read a book by the pool and soak up the sun and beauty of the desert setting.) In the afternoon one spouse may want to enjoy a private treatment at the Spa while the other plays a round of golf. In addition to the 2 courses at the Boulders, there are also numerous other excellent courses within a 20 minute radius e.g. Troon North (2 courses), Grayhawk (2 courses), Rancho Manana, Wildfire, Legend Trail, and TPC of Scottsdale (home of the PGA tour’s FBR Open.)In late afternoon, meet back at the house for cocktails on the back patio to admire the sunset over Black Mountain just west of the house. Then maybe dinner 5 minutes away in the Old West town of Cave Creek, where you can find everything from fine dining (e.g. award-winning Binkley’s) to colorful, two-steppin’, boot scootin’ cowboy honky-tonks (e.g the Buffalo Chip Saloon.)
The shopping, galleries, fine dining, theater, and other attractions of Old Town Scottsdale are only 40 minutes away and the Phoenix airport is only 45 minutes away. However, chances are you’ll enjoy the atmosphere of The Boulders and the Carefree/Cave Creek vicinity so much that you’ll rarely venture down south into the city. We guarantee your satisfaction. If you aren’t satisfied about something, we’ll make it right. Our goal is for your stay in The Boulders to be one that you’ll want to repeat annually.
