This magnificent, island-style estate truly exceeds all expectations. Located on secluded Pakala Beach on Kauai's west side, this totally serene property borders an orchard and is heavily sprinkled with mature shade trees and a variety of palms.
A long driveway leads guests through a breathtaking panorama to a welcoming portico. The large, southern-style veranda looks out across an expansive landscape and a low, lava rock wall to the Pacific Ocean. This is the perfect vantage point to enjoy spectacular island sunsets.
Step through French doors to a living room lavishly decorated with antique furniture and oriental carpets. The separate dining room is a luxurious amenity perfect for big families. A large, eat-in kitchen opens onto a deck overlooking the beautifully manicured gardens. All bedrooms, are extremely spacious and comfortably furnished. Some are actually suites and several open onto the veranda and the extraordinary vista beyond. Befitting royalty, this impressive home invites families and friends to spend time together yet has acres of space for quiet interludes. A short drive in either direction leads to area restaurants offering a tempting variety of cuisine.
Activities nearby include seasonal swimming, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, shopping, boat tours and helicopter tours. World class surfing right in front at Infinity's (aka Pakala's).
The house technically has 4 bdrms, however, what used to be a dressing room off of the master bdrm has it's own double bed and separate bathroom.

6 of us stayed for 1 week over Christmas 2011 to celebrate my uncle's 60th birthday. We were blown away by the location and beautiful setting. Each day there were surfers out front and whale watching from the lanai. The beaches to the north were undeveloped and we enjoyed daily long walks (bug free!) to explore the flora and fauna. What wonderful water--what sunsets--what privacy! The kitchen had every amenity you could ask for: coffee grinder, electric can opener, 2 ovens, 2 refrigerators, wine glasses, aperitif glasses, fine China, serving platters, dishsoap, paper towels, etc. The portable gas grill was spotlessly clean and right off the kitchen. The rooms were comfortable and had direct outside access to the lanai. This made for additional privacy. We really liked the bedroom to bathroom ratio--no one had to share. This was an easy trip--easy to check in and check out, easy access to Waimea canyon and the ocean. The wireless internet access was a real plus and the laundry room was stocked and roomy with a drying rack for swimwear. We hardly ate out because it was nicer to BBQ and hang out on the lanai to take in the view. We needed to receive and send a few faxes during the trip and the management office was extremely accommodating and helpful, calling when a fax arrived, etc.. Other than some zealous roosters, we have no complaints.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1870
About the owner: We live in Honolulu and have made our family home on Kauai available for vacation rental.
Why the Owner Chose Makaweli:
It is my family home built in 1912 by my grandfather Sinclair Robinson who was the Manager of the Gay & Robinson sugar plantation and patriarch of the Robinson family of Kauai and Niihau.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Tired of crowded beaches? Our huge yard that runs all the way down to secluded Pakala beach. Perfect for kids. One virtually lives on the front veranda watching the surfers directly out front and the mountains to the side. Great for conversations and naps! The sun sets directly out front silhouetting Niihau and Kekaha. Our home sits in the middle of the Robinson family lands, cattle ranch and plantation. The beach is isolated. One can walk two miles west along the beach to ruins of the Russian Fort Elizabeth and the Waimea River. An ancient Hawaiian fish pond is a stone's throw down the beach. Collect abundant drift wood or watch a local fisherman casting his net off the reef.
