Yearly Winter Trip in Truckee
Yearly Winter Trip in Truckee

Without a doubt, our official lodging destination for our yearly winter trip to Truckee is, hands-down, the Truckee Cabin in Truckee. This was our second consecutive year staying at the Truckee cabin and it’s proved to be just as accommodating, cozy and memorable as the first year (Feb 2012). The home is situated in the most peaceful and scenic point in Truckee (in my opinion) with views of beautifully snow covered mountains and the awe-inspiring Truckee River, from both inside and outside of the cabin. It doesn’t get any more relaxing and beautiful than this. The Cabin offers all of the comforts of home and is geared to encourage spending quality time with family and friends and enjoying the outdoors. The indoors offers just as much fun as the outdoors with Direct TV (Premium Channels), free Wi-Fi, DVD, books, board games, and a warm fireplace. You’ll find you won’t be doing much TV watching because the outdoors is very alluring. A few steps from the front-door you'll discover an accessible natural walking trail which makes it ideal to take a nice hike up the mountain and alongside the river. We trekked up the trail in search of Big Foot, and my son and nephew had a fabulous time tracing clues and finding evidence indicating Big Foot existed in these woods ;) The Cabin comfortably accommodated the 8 of us, overall the home is very clean, the 4 bedrooms are spacious, the beds are warm/clean/cozy, bathrooms are clean (bring shampoo), and there’s an abundance of firewood for the fireplace. The décor is reminiscent of coming back home to Mom’s house in the woods with adorable and witty ‘cabiny’ knickknacks that reflect it's warm and 'homie' feel. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to make homemade pizza, enjoy a turkey feast, and/or light up the grill for some delicious BBQ; we ate and drank as if we were hibernating for the winter. The cabin is located right off HWY80, making it especially convenient to take a brief drive to hit the slopes at Northstar/TahoeDonner (about 15-20mins) or head into Downtown Truckee for some shopping. You’ll find you won’t leave the cabin unless you’re heading to the slopes. The owners proved to be very helpful and trustworthy making the rental process easy, convenient and worry-free. There's no doubt we will be back to enjoy another winter on the river, and we are making plans to experience the Cabin in the summer!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

We spent a week this fall enjoying the fishing opportunities, views and observing the wildlife. The house is very comfortable and the deck is well layed out for enjoying food and drink overlooking the Truckee River. Duane and Diane were very accomodating and made sure we were comfortable as well as answering any questions we may have had. We would recommend this house to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors and we will be back the next time we visit California. What a great experience for the 4 of us (2 couples), sitting on the back deck listening to the water race across the rocks on the Truckee River down below with occasional fly fishermen and kayakers. Also early morning wonderful hikes along the Truckee were full of wildlife including Canadian geese, ducks, beaver, and large herds of deer. We loved staying here and hope to return someday soon.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

What a fantastic family Christmas vacation we had at Hirschdale on the Truckee! The description of the property is exactly what we found it to be and having the owners living next door to the property was a bonus. They oriented us to the house and the area upon our arrival and gave us helpful suggestions for grocery stores, restaurants, and nearby ski areas. As we planned to eat most of our meals at the house, having gourmet cookware of almost every size and shape made our meal preparations very easy. The "extras" such as spices, some food staples, dish and laundry detergent, and plenty of linens and blankets made our stay even more pleasant. The views of the mountains and the Truckee River from the kitchen window (that was the length of the kitchen) were spectacular! We watched the sun come up every morning over the nearby mountain - well, some of us did! We found the proximity of the town of Truckee, the Northstar ski area, and the Reno-Tahoe airport very convenient. In spite of our number of people, including two infants, nothing about our stay was a "hassle" because the owners had made sure that the home would be a "home away from home" for their guests. We would highly recommend this property and the Truckee/Lake Tahoe area as an excellent location for family vacations.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

We loved our weekend in Truckee/Lake Tahoe and the house made it all perfect. The bedrooms were very spacious, plenty of towels/linens were available, the bathrooms were big and clean and the kitchen was big enough for 3-4 of us to get in there and work together making meals and treats and having fun just being together. Having a washer and dryer was very convenient for washing wet clothes when the kids (and dad and uncle) came in from the river. Duane and Diane even have recycling cans available for us to use! Everything we could think of was right there. The river behind the house was such a treat, the grandkids loved it (almost as much as their dad and uncle, LOL) and spent more time there then I expected. Laying in bed at night listening to the river and the occasional train pass by was so relaxing. During the day the deck was the perfect gathering place for visiting, taking a nap, reading, eating or just enjoying the warm weather and with the gas grill and the large kitchen we were able to make all our meals and save so much money as opposed to going out to eat all the time. Plus, Diane was just a phone call away if we needed anything. But the house was well stocked and fully equipped. The home is about 20 minutes from Tahoe City (northern Lake Tahoe area) and was an easy drive for groceries, site seeing or anything we could have wanted or needed. The privacy of being away from all the tourists and crowds was wonderful. We even bought our own rafts and went up the river near I-80 and rafted down the river to the house!! It took about an hour and was so much fun for everyone!! It's not hard to fall in love with the house, the area and the excitement that goes with being with family and friends together in this home. Do yourself and your family a big favor and come to Lake Tahoe and stay in this house. You will be glad you did.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

This house was located in a beautiful setting on a rushing Truckee River. The deck was a great place to sit and relax and we had a great time. The owners were available for anything we needed and were easy to work with. The train was a little loud at night with the windows open (won't matter in the winter I'd guess), but it was great to watch it go by in the daytime. It was perfect weather and we would return again. This house is really convenient to Reno if you have anyone fly in.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Had a great stay at Hirschdale on the Truckee. The setting was absolutely wonderful. You could view a myriad of wildlife from the deck. The birds species were varied and the frogs croaked advice while I grilled dinner on the deck. We were were visited by two does and their spotted fawns. An osprey flew overhead looking for trout, much like myself. The heavy winter of 2010 and 2011 rendered the river running high due to the extremely heavy snow pack. As such, the fishing was a bit challenging this early in the season (late June). Nonetheless, this home affords the fisherperson wonderful access to stellar stretches of trout water, complete with riffles and pools. I managed to entice a big fella to my fly as I was nymphing. I had him for just a few seconds before he gave me a wink, nod and a smile and broke my tippet, absoconding with my fly. I knew he was a native due to his coloration and girth. If you come, and you should, remember to practice catch and release for future generations, not to mention future renters. The host and hostess are delighful people. Their passion for life and living is displayed in their decoration of this cozy abode. Their attention to detail is to be marveled and the yin and yang of female and male decoration influence is wonderfully balanced. The flowers are beautiful and well cared for. At the same time, several pictures of various types of ducks adorn the walls of the living room. Something for everybody. Hats off to the Hosts. We'll be returning another time for rest, relaxation, and food for the soul.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet get-away on the Truckee River this is the place to stay! After driving in a snow storm, we were warmly greeted by the owners who made every effort to not only give us critical weather updates, but to create a comfortable stay in their well appointed home. We loved the views from the kitchen, dining room and master bedroom! Although it was below freezing outside, we stayed warm and toasty. It was great to be away from the crowds in the evening and yet close to the ski resorts during the day. We look forward to staying here again soon!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, families with young children.

My family found the perfect place for a snow vacation - easy to get to, peaceful and beautiful, a place to just enjoy being together as a family. Though just a few minutes off the I-80 freeway, the location of the property seems to be a world away. Surrounded by snow covered hills and forested mountains, the windows and decks of the house look down on the icy, flowing river below and the trains passing by on the tracks beyond. Everything in the house was clean and in good working order. And even though the outside temperature never got above freezing until the day we left, we were warm and cozy in the house. The master bedroom suite with vaulted ceilings and great views, and the other three bedrooms, are individually and charmingly decorated with comfortable beds, warm quilts and reading lamps. The bathrooms have big tubs/showers, plenty of thick, soft towels and basic bath necessities. The kitchen/dining/living area downstairs gives everyone room to spread out separately, but still be together. My daughters took turns cooking fabulous dinners in the very well-equipped kitchen, and we read, played games and enjoyed videos on the large tv/entertainment system with great speakers. But the most amazing thing to do was just open the blinds and look out at the fresh, white snow surrounding the house, blanketing the decks, the trees, the yard and the hill sloping down to the river. We did manage to spend some time outside in the snow, and hiked along the trail road that winds alongside and just above the river where we had amazing views back to the house. A few minutes drive to the other side of the freeway took us to beautiful Boca Reservoir which has a fabulous hill for saucering and plenty of parking. We had all the privacy and quiet we wanted during this family getaway, but it was good to know the owners were not far off if we needed anything. They have an unbelievably beautiful and peaceful place on the river – we hope to return.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.
