Carriage House in Prime Locaton (Quiet, Safe, Walk to Museums)
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This impeccably renovated 1890 carriage house is about twice the width of a typical Capitol Hill row house, allowing for more windows and much better proportioned rooms. Its semi-open floor plan was way ahead of its time.
It is furnished for a family rather than for large groups, by prioritizing space and comfort over the number of beds. For example, the 'Map Room' could have been offered as a third bedroom because it is easily large enough (the previous owners used it as the main bedroom). Yet with it's row of three windows we felt the room would make a great reading spot, so you will find it set up as a study. We will be happy to supply a crib or an air bed for the Map Room upon request.
This house is in the very heart of a bustling and cosmopolitan city, yet is a quiet oasis in a friendly neighborhood. The house is located on a quiet friendly street with a park at each end of our block. We are around the block from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service. We recommend that visitors come without cars, because the most enjoyable way to get around DC is on foot and Metro. Escaping DC traffic is a major advantage of staying on the hill. However, the Yellow House includes a free visitor parking permit in case you arrive by car.
If the Yellow House is unavailable for your dates, you may like our other properties, VRBO #325684 (2 bedrooms) and #325690 (1 bedroom).
How to Book:
We recommend using the 'Book it Now' button, which will confirm availability and provide a detailed quote before you reach the screen on which you are asked to commit. We book with the $120 cleaning fee, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. All payments are self-service, via credit card or e-check using VRBO's secure payments page, and you do not need to provide us credit card information.
Arrival and departure logistics:
Check out time is 11AM, check in time 3PM. This is to allow time for the cleaners if there is a same-day change-over. If either time poses an issue please let us know, as a it is often possible to make alternative arrangements with the cleaners.
We use a keypad lock, so there is no need to mail or drop off keys, and you can arrive at any time of night.

My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Great! The house was exactly as described - beautiful, spacious, comfortable, very clean, quiet, and in an attractive, diverse, and safe neighborhood. The Map Room offered a nice desk-work and reading space, as did the backyard patio area. We liked easy and pleasant walks to nearby Capitol South and Eastern Market metro stations, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library/Theatre, Library of Congress, and the Capitol. A huge variety of good restaurants, cafes, and bars are only a few minutes walks away on Pennsylvania Avenue, near Eastern Market, and on Seventh and Eighth Streets. A nearby parking lot and on-street parking with the guest parking placard are both available. Alec provided extensive information about the house, neighborhood, getting around, general tourist attractions, restaurants, etc. Five stars? You bet!!Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

My father and I stayed in the yellow house for a few days in May. We really enjoyed the location and had a super easy walk from the Metro. We were able to see everything we wanted by walking or taking public transportation. The neighborhood felt very safe as we walked home from a few late dinners, and the neighbors were quiet. I had to do some work on my computer, and the wifi worked great. The house was very clean and well equipped with all of the necessities, including a hair dryer and coffee maker. We were there just as the weather got hot and we had to switch on the air conditioning, which worked great. Communication with the owner was perfection. I would definitely stay at this property again or recommend to friends and family.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed in this nice townhouse in a treelined lane close to capitol Hill . There was a pleasant garden. The house was very good taken care off. Beds in good condition. Bathrooms okay as was the kitchen. Walking to main attractions was easy to do. The floors are still cracking. Without something of a welcome e.g. With flowers or a bottle of wine and a little welcomenote from the owner it gives a little impersonal feelingl. The furnishings and decoration could have some more attention. All in all a good base to visit Washington dc with two couples.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

This is a wonderful home, in a beautiful area. The Location is within walking distance to everything, and I mean everything! There is no need for a car. Great restaurants, local pubs, an incredible outdoor flea market, shops and of course "The Mall" The Cherry blossoms were in full bloom, the squirrels were running around the back yard. Red cardinals were singing, and enjoyed every minute of it. We cooled down with a margarita after getting off the Metro, there is taco shop right across the street from the exit. Then its just a short walk up the street to the house. Everyday was an adventure, meeting new people, talking to future congressmen and senators. Washington DC is truly amazing, We are American Proud, and everyday we visited another reason why we love this country! Take the Segway Tour fun, fun, fun Thank you for a lovely place to stay, we will never forget this vacation.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

This is the place to stay if you want to be extremely close to the Capitol, the National Mall, popular restaurants, Eastern Market (!!!!), and the metro. Safe, cute neighborhood and house was more than accommodating. While parking is at a premium in most of DC, we often had parking places available right in front of the house. Having said that, you will not need a car unless you are leaving the central DC area. We would stay here again.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Overall, the property was very clean, Alec was right on top of things and responded promptly, the kitchen was well-equipped, and the location was near a small grocery store, the Eastern Market, the Metro, and within walking distance to the Capitol. The only reasons for not receiving 5 stars was that he did not have a computer and he could have used some help decorating. The parking certificate is a big plus for anyone driving. The neighborhood is safe with many restaurants nearby. Eastern Market is FABULOUS with fresh fruits and vegetables, fantastic meats and fish, and a bakery. We are big breakfast people, but did not find any breakfast restaurants to rave about - perhaps we just did not look around enough. You will not go wrong with this property - much better than a nondescript hotel!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

This is a very nice house - VERY clean - updated - quiet neighborhood - - - - But the best part is the location. 3 blocks to the nearest Metro station, about 3 blocks to the Capitol Building, 2 blocks to the Eastern Market where you can buy fresh meat and produce. We cooked almost all our evening meals at the house, and all our breakfasts. The only drawback is that the full bath upstairs is small and both bedrooms are upstairs. The downstairs full bath is larger and better. You just have to figure out who will do what where. The kitchen is wonderful, though small, but unless you want to have everyone in there cooking at once, it's not a problem. The back yard is lovely, and if the weather is warm you'll want to have all your meals out there. We have actually already booked for next year's trip. Thanks, Alec!Did you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: In my day job I'm responsible for process improvement of professional services at a major software firm. I apply our cutting edge service practices to my little rental property in my spare time!
Why the Owner Chose Capitol Hill:
Some years ago my wife and I owned a vacation rental in Key Biscayne, Florida. It did very well and we enjoyed interacting with our guests, many of which became repeat visitors. But we had to sell it to move to a larger home with the arrival of a baby. Now we are in a position to re-enter the market, but this time we've done it near home to simplify the logistics. We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having run a vacation rental before and of having lived in this area for close to twenty years.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location! This is a place which is extremely quiet, where you are the shortest possible distance to the major DC attractions, and where you feel safe walking at any hour of night or day. It's a neighborhood that is utterly livable. There is wonderful grocery shopping nearby, restaurants you would visit with the family, bookstores, etc. Metro is right there if you need to go beyond walking range.
