Honu's Hideaway - a Warm, Inviting Tide Pool Just Outside Your Door!
- Minimum stay:3-5 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
HONU'S HIDEAWAY IS ONE OF THOSE HIDDEN GEMS that you appreciate more with every step you take through the house and grounds. Completely remodeled in 2010, the owner spared no expense to make the house comfortable and stylish, always thinking of the guest experience. It's a perfect place to relax with the large living/dining/kitchen area under the high ceilings that are covered in beautiful tropical woods. The home has a contemporary feel with nice appliances, dishes, linens, and the most gorgeous granite countertops we've seen.
Enjoy this short preview.
WHEN YOU'RE NOT SNORKELING OR SWIMMING, you'll find a large flat-screen satellite TV with Dish Satellite, Blu-ray DVD player, IPod/FM stereo system and Wireless Broadband in the back bedrooms for your convenience. Honu's Hideaway has 3 bedrooms, all with classy Hawaiian decor and high-quality firm beds. The large master bedroom has a king bed and en suite bath, the second bedroom has a queen bed, and the third bedroom has twins. Use of all 3 bedrooms will increase the cleaning fee. Both full baths have wide pocket doors for those with limited mobility; one with shower/bath and one with low step in shower.
BUT WAIT! THE BEST PART IS THE POND! This may be the most charming, tranquil and inviting shared tide pool in the area; varying in depth from 2-12 ft. Just one glance and you can visualize yourself immersed in the warm 89 degree water, swimming, snorkeling or floating for hours on one of the rafts thoughtfully provided by the owner. Beautiful palm trees and tropical plants surround the pond.
IF YOU CAN TEAR YOURSELF AWAY FROM THE POND, relax on the outdoor lanai with top-of-the-line wicker furniture, or have a barbecue and dine at the outdoor teak table that seats 4 comfortably. (The BBQ is both gas - supplied - _and_ briquets - BYO). You'll find a large flat-screen TV with Dish Satellite, Blu-ray DVD player, IPod/FM stereo system and Wireless Broadband in the back bedrooms (only) for your convenience.
WHEN YOU'RE READY TO EXPLORE THE AREA, Champagne pond (for snorkeling) is only a 1 minute walk and less than a block away, so you can easily hear the sounds of the ocean from the house. Wai’opae/Kapoho Tide Pools offer great snorkeling and are only a 2 minute drive out the gate.
HONU’S HIDEAWAY ENDEAVORS TO BE A GREEN HOUSE; using green cleaners wherever possible, have installed solar hot water, use fans only not air conditioning, have a clothesline for guests use, encourage guests to conserve electricity, have green shopping bags available for guests use and offer compost and garbage recycling facilities. The house affords privacy as it has a lovely bamboo fence and is located within the lovely walking area of Beach Lots, the gated community. This is NOT a party house, the owner lives just down the street, this is a tasteful well-appointed home and we endeavor to keep it that way, for your enjoyment.
HONU'S HIDEAWAY IS WAITING FOR YOU at an affordable price! Once you stay here and experience the home, pond and grounds, you'll know why we call this place a true hidden gem. If it is booked for your dates, check out the sister property, LUANA HIDEAWAY just two doors down and created by the same decorator!
Year-round rate range is $125 - $255 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Cleaning fee ranges from $125 to $175, also depending upon party size., one-time $35 damage waiver fee.

Rating Details: I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was very happy with the location. The vacation rental was spotless. The property manager was very helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We have stayed here several times and always enjoyed the property. I made suggestions to make it a little more comfy and the owner stepped right up. The only regret I have about my stay here is access to the pond. It is very difficult for those who might bne disabled, older or both to get out of the swimming area. i only swam once as it hurt my knee to crawl back out and I didn't want to reinjure so I couldn't take advantage of the pond. I may have to just look elsewhere for easier access. I hate to do that!I see in the guestbook that others are having the same experience...hope it can be remedied! Rating Details: I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was very happy with the location. The vacation rental was spotless. The property manager was very helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We loved the place. Have stayed in a Kapoho house before and really love the tide pools and general feel of the area. Location is right next to the Champagne pond and also very close to ocean. The house has a nice floor plan and worked very well for our family of 4.I was impressed with how well thought out things were and the nice touches like, water mats, game boards, yoga mats, hangers everywhere to put towels and bathing suits. The only thing that was less pleasant was the construction on the little house across the pond. Workers were not there but the place just doesn't look very nice and there is an unattractive plastic along the road and the side of the pond. Anyways we did like having the pond to ourselves... Thanks for a great stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Walking into the house our breath was taken away! The open floor plan gave a great feeling of space and transitioned effortlessly to the secluded garden patio. The entire house was gracefully appointed with tasteful island art. The location was fantastic for many adventures and fascinating activities, or just hanging out enjoying the peaceful quiet vibe of the property. The pool was lovely, but the neighboring house was being remodeled and was a bit of an eyesore. Of course we understand this is not the fault of the owner. During our stay the neighbors put up floating barriers at the far end of the pool. We phoned the owner and she IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED and found out the barriers were for our protection from falling coconuts. We found the neighbors to be very friendly and welcoming into the pool at all times. A quick 2 minute jaunt takes you to Champagne Pond - a community shared geothermically heated tidal pool filled often with sea turtles and colorful fish. It was a very gentle place to float and snorkle around. We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this outstanding property!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Rating Details: I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was very happy with the location. The vacation rental was spotless. The property manager was very helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The management company was EXCELLENT. Answered all of my questions before I arrived in a timely manner. Very attentive. The home/property is lovely and considerate - anything you may want or need is there. The fresh fruit that greeted us was heavenly and huge - we couldn't finish it all. The pond was heaven on earth. The neighbors were very nice and informative. My only concern is over the access/use of the pond. We saw the property pins and its obvious that the overwhelming majority of the pond rests in the neighbor's yard. Once we knew that we felt like "trespassers" when we used the pond, BUT, the neighbors were there while we were there and they were okay with us using the pond. I think the owner should make it clear to her tenants that she has secured permission of the neighbors for us to use the pond without worry as the pond is the SELLER for the property. =) Manager responded on 3/22/2013: Thank you for your review and suggestion for the notice about the pond. Hawaii law is very clear that ocean waters do not 'belong' to any private person. Swimming may not be restricted by anyone as long as access is legal, which in this case it is, hence no legal requirement for to put guests mind at ease, a notice may be just the ticket :) Mahalo!, Hawaii Holiday ManagementOwner response: Thank you for letting us know your concerns about the legality of using the pond. To address them we have posted this signage at Honus Hideaway: Please enjoy swimming in our shared tidal pond as all TIDAL/OCEAN WATERS are owned by NO private person, only the access to some tidal/ocean waters is privately owned. You are entering the pond on access/steps owned by Honu’s Hideaway , but please be respectful and do not tread on the neighbors land or swim under their coconuts trees as this is very dangerous due to falling coconuts. The neighbors are friendly and share the pond, just as the 3 neighbors across the street share their pond amongst the 3 houses. Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

Rating Details: I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was more than happy with the location. The vacation rental was spotless. The property manager was very helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: hi all I stay a lot of places in the state each year and thought this was a very nice, clean and well managed property. owner and marketing does a great job. A nice location but a little dissapointed with champain pond. access to pond is between houses was a drag A little cenent walkway and no sand? "nice turtle that lives there though!" Champain pond is a great location if you have a jeep and you drive past the light beacon!(didn't swim though rough and windy there but after all it was february. I will say the other area south was great for swimming around and easy access. house was great but owner should really update the wifi router for house "come-on really? only $175 or so for long range router" I do rentals also and people expect good internet connection! wonderful stay and would recomend this property. one other thing was we only had one access key for gate and 2 cars so that was tough too deal with. (i never did ask about a second access key) so that could have been my fault. i can't say enough about the house, clean nicly laid out and very relaxed atmosphere. and of course very warm pool! a very different stay for me becouse I have never stayed on that side of the island before. Mahalo until next time Manager responded on 3/11/2013: Thanks for your nice review! The internet is a big problem that, believe me, if we and the Owner could fix it, we would! Access is very limited in East Hawaii and this just happens to be one of those spots that no service provider can get decent access continue to work on a solution. Internet is accesible in the back bedrooms so guests certainly can keep connected. Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday ManagementDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

POSITIVES: (1) The management company is excellent. Everyone I dealt with was customer-oriented and responsive. All of my questions were answered in advance. (2) The home is as lovely as pictured on VRBO. It is as if we stepped into the photos on the website. The home is accommodating also. Almost anything you could think of or want is available to you. The home is thoughtfully furnished to enable the most stressed-out person to unwind and relax. (3) Little surprises, such as the fresh fruit on the kitchen counter that greeted us, the book with notes from prior guests, and the card from the cleaning service/massage therapist, were delightful. (4) We happened to stumble across the neighbors on both sides of the home and they were friendly and welcoming. (5) We loved the outdoor shower. (6). The frogs at night were noisy and piercing at times, but, we got used to it. (7) Last, but not least, the semi-private TIDEPOOL/POND is just what we had hoped for and more. It was an "extraordinary experience" to be able to swim and snorkel in it daily. Amazing! SUGGESTION: The only suggestion I have is that the management company or owner may want to make it clear to all guests that they have secured full permission from the neighbor to allow guests to swim in the entirety of the pond because the reason most guests rent this property is for the semi-private TIDEPOOL/POND. We are both attorneys and as we were exploring the property one day we noticed the staking pins on the pond-side of the home and became concerned about the propriety of swimming in the pond when most of it seemed outside of the boundary of the vacation rental. One day, however, the neighbors whose property line encloses the majority of the pond showed up to clean the pond. They are a local couple from Hilo. While they were cleaning the pond we chatted for quite some time and they graciously allowed us to swim in all of the pond. Without their permission we would have felt like trespassers. So unless there are water rights issues we are unaware of, my only suggestion is for the owner or management company to "work it" out with the neighbor so that future guests know that they have full permission to swim in all of the pond. =) OVERALL, we had a PEACEFUL, PRIVATE and WONDERFUL time. MAHALO NUI LOA to the management company and owner for making our stay all that we expected it to be.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Rating Details: I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. I was very happy with the location. The vacation rental was very clean. The property manager was very helpful. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We have stayed here several times enjoyed and would return. These are the things that would make me choose another similar property. 1) The pond i difficult to enter and exit especially for us with aging knees and backs. 2) The maid keeps washing everything down with the same greasy rag evidently. It took me 3 runs at the glass coffee table to get it clean. 3) The shower stall in the mb floods the floor easily. it need a weighted shower curtain. 4) The second bath is Hot all the time as the air does not circulate. needs a fan! 5) The stove top has no fan either and gets uncomfortably hot to use especially in the summer. Last but not least and this is a big one. The owner comes over and in too often. She comes in when we are not there. We have met her and were suprised when this happens. She has a georgous place and we really have enjoyed for the miost part, but I have met others who have stayed and they say the same thing about the pond and the lack of circulation and privacy. By the way, it is my understanding that she does not own the pond area or procured rights to its use. We met the owners this trip and they let us know it was 99% on their property. Luckily they were kind enough to let us use it. I don't know what the future brings, but I think she is advertising this falsely. I will ask before I rent again or refer. Mmost of these are easy, inexpensive fixes..but the pond is a real issue, both its access in the future and difficult ingress, eggres. One more thing. as I said before we have been there several times now (we come at least twice a year and we have never been offered a discount as a repeat client. I also think going from $135.00 to $225.o00 especially for us returners is really disproportionate. Please give this your consideration. Thanks !Owner response: We're glad you decided that your issues with Honu's Hideway were not sufficient to have you choose another property as you had mentioned and Thank You so much for your recent, repeat April booking for which you received a return guest discount. We look forward to seeing you soon…..

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: Hawaii has called me thrice. I first discovered this secret bit of paradise in 2006, on the last leg of a trip from Australia, where I had lived for 24 years. In 2009 it all came back to me, when I decided that I needed to purchase a holiday rental for my own retreats (sanity) from too much work. I love Old Hawaii, the uniqueness of this area and the wonderful year round perfect micro-climate here. When I sold my business in 2011 happily but unexpectedly; it seemed my plans were already laid out for me, with a home here waiting (Honu’s Hideaway) as Hawaii called me again for the third and final time when I moved here permanently. My guests had so enjoyed the house and requests to rent it continued to come in. Frankly I did not yet know how to completely relax, so when my neighbor’s house just 2 doors down came up for sale and now with all the time in the world and a knack for remodeling and some experience, I decided to purchase it and turn it (Luana Hideaway) into the great entertaining and lounging house. Well the best laid plans of mice and men, can and do go astray; when I eventually realized that I was really cut out to be a farm girl with lots of space for gardening and for me and my dogs, as I had been living for the last 12 years. In 2012 I purchased a lush tropical 4 acre farm 10 minutes away, so now I have the best of both worlds; I have my farm lifestyle and when there are check outs or vacancies, I get to come and enjoy relaxing in the warm ponds. I am glad I can share this wonderful experience with you and the bounty of my garden. A hui hou, Kathy Young
