Easily accessible, yet away from the mainstream, a visit to Makana Kai in the small Hawaiian Beaches community is an escape to an earlier time. Quaint and private, this new split-level apartment provides quality and comfort and a feel for the real Hawaiian lifestyle. Casual, indoor/outdoor living with open beam ceilings, bamboo and tile flooring and granite countertops accentuate the cozy design.
Pockets of jungle nearby echo the exotic sounds of myna birds, cardinals, finches and coquie frogs, while the open park affords an ocean view of an ever changing skyline and ocean movements. It's balmy breezes mixing scents of surf and flowers captivate the spirit and encourage both exploration and relaxation. . Dark nights display a star-studded universe enjoyable from inside or outside on the deck or private rear yard.
A perfect get-away to escape the stress of modern living or for the more active and adventurous many activities to enjoy ocean and mountains.
NOTE: This is a non-smoking facility
What to do: Life is slower, but ripe with the diversity of the Big Island. One can enjoy rarely traveled jungle roads, creation in the making with new black sand beaches and varying volcano activity, or view the world from Mauna Kea’s Observatories high above around 13, 700 ’elevation.
An island of secluded beaches, tropical forests, and 11 of the earths 13 climate zones offers incredible hiking trails, scenery and viewing of exotic birds and plants found nowhere else. Vintage Hilo Town and Pahoa offer a glimpse of older Hawaii with early century buildings, farmers markets and a strong dose of the Aloha Spirit.
A place of inspiration for artists, writers or spiritual reflection, you can totally relax, soaking in the balmy weather or enjoy any of the 101 activities the island has to offer.

Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Wow! What a delight and a pleasure it was to find this humble abode! Loved the location, and the lay out of the unit-- kitchen downstairs, bedroom upstairs-- and the View! Amazing! The place was even better than the pictures depict---- the warmth and comfort, luxurious bedding, towels, and little touches like soft pillows, memory foam, carpeted stairway, bamboo flooring-- I hope to come back again and just stay and relax!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

This property was exactly as described and photographed. Gary does an excellent job of running a one unit Inn. The location was perfect for me as I am planning to move to the neighborhood upon retirement in a few years. So, this was a great spot to explore the immediate neighborhood from. And, after my three day stay here, I'm quite happy with my decision to buy a lot here two years ago. If I were visiting Puna for sightseeing I would still rate this as a good location - in that it is not far from Pahoa Town and local sights. Mostly though, a visit to the Puna district should be to relax and stay local and slow down. The location of Makana Kai across from Kahakai Park provided a lovely view. The surf on this part of the coast can be quite spectacular both visually and audibly. I was given quite a show while here at the end November. Gary provides a nice binder with information about the property and things to do in the area. I tried Boogie Woogie Pizza (the only pizza in the binder - there are others in town) in Pahoa. It beat anything back home. Pahoa town on Friday night is quite the hopping place - lots of interesting sights and sounds. Because of the stairs to multiple levels I would recommend this property cautiously. My 78 yr old mother would love this place - but for the steps. I look forward to returning.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.

We were very happy with our stay at Makana Kai. The setup is great: kitchen (though note that no hot surface to cook on) on 1st and bed and living space on 2nd floor. Super clean and a lot of room to move. The mattress is way too soft for our taste. The fact that there isn't any AC was not at all a problem, wind and fans do the job fine. While there, we rode the small street Old Govnmt Road to Champagne Pond. Wonderful drive. A must. We went to Lava viewing at Kalapana and walked 2 miles to see lava flow into the ocean. We also went to Volcanoes Park. All within a 1 hour drive. Restaurants in Pahoa were good and at about a 10-15 minute drive. This is a great deal and hosts are super nice and welcoming without being intrusive.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Spend just few days there, owners were friendly and caring. Nice place to stay much longer. Delivered to the promise. The Big Island offers a lot to see and do, and it is not too far anywhere from this place (4WD recommended for nature sighters, some very nice roads are unpaved or pretty steep). Thanks!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Awesome place. The pictures are most accurate. Very clean and nice with great decor. we had breakfast out on the balcony and the sunrise was beautiful. Gary is a wonderful host. This area is not touristy at all...so if you want to experience probably how the true natives live this is the place.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My Fiancee and I stayed at Makana Kai for a wonderful 3 days. The rental was clean and tastefully decorated. The grounds were well maintained and had beautiful native plants and landscaping (true to the pictures). Gary was great and emailed us prior to our visit. He was very accommodating and even allowed to let us check in early since we had an early flight. The location of the rental was very close (a 5 min walk) to a park that had coconut trees and a large area for picnics. It was right on a non swimming beach (however, there were locals fishing) with beautiful cliffs dropping off into the ocean, which was great for pictures. I would recommend this property to everyone. The neighborhood is quiet and pleasant. There are a few sets of stairs, however, that may be difficult for some.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed at Makana Kai for several days in January. It's located a few minutes away from the ocean. You can't swim there, but the view is awesome. Makana Kai is a part of the house with its own entrance and completely private. We felt as if we were at home. Gary and Karen are very considerate hosts - everything we needed was in place, even a flash light! Everything in the house was done with exquisite taste. I also enjoyed the patio, where we had breakfast every morning overlooking a park and the ocean. There are couple of restaurants not far away, and a grocery store, so it was quite convenient. Overall, I really enjoyed staying at Makana Kai and would certainly recommend it to anybody.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We spent one week at Makana Kai on our first ever visit to the Big Island, and staying here was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Gary and Karen were excellent hosts. The driving instructions from Hilo airport were very clear and we had no trouble finding the place. Makana Kai exceeded our expectations; the reality matched or surpassed the pictures and descriptions on the website. We appreciated the wifi and satellite tv. The apartment was spotless, very well maintained. It was the perfect size for a couple. The neighborhood was quiet, good for relaxing after our days spent exploring. Coming from the silence of winter, we found the nighttime chorus of frogs and birds refreshing. Staying in the south-east part of the island was a good choice for us, as Volcano National Park was about a half-hour away (we spent 3 days there), Hilo with all of its attractions about the same distance north, and the fascinating coastal road to Kalapana was right outside our door. We also enjoyed visiting Pahoa, with several good restauants and markets for take out to enjoy at home after a hard day's touring. We will definitely recommend Makana Kai to our friends and relatives, and we look forward to going back ourselves on our next trip to Hawaii. Mahalo Gary & Karen!
