Relax into nature and all of the blessings of Hawaii at PapaLani; a serene 13+ acre organic avocado and macnut farm with an abundance of tropical fruit trees, veggies, herbs, flowers & berries.
Located 30 miles south of Kailua-Kona we have a perfect year-round climate, at 1600 ft. above sea level on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano (the most massive, active volcano on Planet Earth!). Savor the total seclusion and quiet. PapaLani is authentic Hawai'i, unspoiled by crowds and resorts. A great location that gives you many options for experiencing the Big Island's natural diversity. You are just 4 miles from the closest place to jump in the ocean and 15-minutes to Ho'okena Beach State Park for sunbathing and swimming with dolphins. A 20-minute drive brings you to the famous Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historic Park and Kealakekua Bay where you can kayak to Captain Cook's monument and snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles & dolphins. We are only 65 miles from Madame Pele's live action at Volcanos National Park, 12 miles from KulaKai Caverns and Manuka State Park. There is also light hiking on the property where you can enjoy seeing all sorts of Hawaii's wildlife and plants. Feel free to explore the 30+ variety of fruit, nut trees & berries while at PapaLani. The commercial organic veggie garden may have produce available for purchase during your visit as well as fresh eggs and nuts . You can learn how to become more sustainable while you are here by seeing how we implement vermiculture (worms), raising chickens, permaculture, Korean Natural Farming, composting, mulching, solar, catching rainwater from the roofs for all water usage for the property, etc. you are welcome to roam the property and find a nice place to meditate & relax.
The Eco-cottage was just completed Dec 2012. It is mostly outdoor living so it is for the adventurous at heart. This is created to let you enjoy a natural setting ... relax and take in the nature that surrounds you. There are 2 large bedrooms with separate entrances so you can rent one space or both.. one bedroom has a queen bed and the other has a bunk bed with full and twin mattresses. In the winter time it can get cool at this elevation & the home is single wall construction so it is chilly at night (bring your warm snugglies). There is a large lanai with an ocean view, an outdoor kitchen with a full refrig, 2 burner stove, sink, dishes & basics you need for the kitchen as well as an outdoor grill. There is a bamboo walled outdoor shower and bathroom with an outdoor outhouse (see pic). Everything is kept clean and tidy although it is mostly outdoors so there are geckos, creepy crawlers, bugs around (if you are allergic to these things you may want to check into a hotel instead :)). High speed internet and long distance phone services are provided. There is also a full range of discounted spa services available on site for guests. check out www.ahawaiiandayspa for a full list of services. Everything is provided for you to take to the beach like lawn chairs, towels & coolers. Snorkel equipment available for $25/week. Organic fruits & veggies are available for purchase from the gardens & land.
Our water source is 100% rainwater caught from the roof of our home and stored in catchment tanks. County water is made available to you in the kitchen for drinking. We have solar panels which are hooked to the grid right now to provide some of the electric.
Nikki (owner) lives on property part time in the ohana which is about 50 yards away from the cottage. If you'd like, she would be happy to give you a farm tour, let you know about Natural Farming, assist you in things to do, places to go and local happenings. If you prefer to have 100 % privacy that is fine too. The farm is a working organic natural farm with 7 chickens, 2 friendly outdoor cats & large black lab named Bubba, plants, trees & gardens so tending to the farm might be occurring during your stay. Your privacy is fully respected.

This eco-cottage was amazing! It was clean, inviting, and very cozy. Nikki was so friendly and made us feel right at home. Surrounded by lush macadamia nut trees, organic fruits and vegetables, beautiful flowers, and lot's of friendly animals - this was truly a wonderful weekend getaway for us nature-lovers. Added bonus: we had the best night sleep in years! Seriously, the peaceful silence of this nestled Captain Cook property offered us a long lasting serenity (much needed for us Oahu folk). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of Kona.Recommended for: Adventure seekers.

What a wonderful place to start our vacation! Our host greeted us warmly and introduced us to the property with a welcoming tour. The property has a wonderful garden where we purchased fresh veggies for the next days meal. Chickens also provided delicious eggs - thank you ladies!! The outdoor toilet and shower had plenty of hot water with beautiful stonework and plenty of privacy. Ample blankets, lighting and security. If you're used to cushy, urban accommodations this is not the place for you. If you're looking for something less main stream with wonderful hospitality and good vibes then stay here! You won't be disappointed.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We loved it. Its got a beautiful outdoor shower, its awesome! And the farm has a dayspa and Nicki offers snorkeling and dolphin swims. We ordered a farm food basket; fresh kale, avocados, papayas, eggs, bananas, and more! Everything you need. The room was very comfortable, we expected it to be rustic, but it was more comfortable than we imagined. For the price, you can't believe how perfect it is!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We enjoyed the EcoCottage so much for 3 days, it was exactly what we were looking for. Comfortable, beautiful scenery, our own private spot, fresh produce, outdoor kitchen so that we could do our own food, and awesome beaches very close to visit! Be sure to take advantage of the snorkel and beach gear that you can rent from Nikki. My favorite parts were the peaceful mornings, avocados from the grove, and the gorgeous outdoor shower. It was a great alternative to busy Kona that allowed us to explore the island, and at a great price. We would definitely come again and I highly recommend it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had a great stay. The outdoor kitchen was well stocked and exactly what we were looking for. This is a great middle ground between camping and luxury. If you're expecting a comprehensive resort, this is not the best choice, but if you're looking for a nice get- away and an attentive host, this is perfect. Close to green and black sand beaches and Volcano National Park. Great for lovers of local foods and eco-conscious travelersDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We enjoyed staying at PapaLani on our recent trip to the Big Island. We were interested in staying on a Permaculture farm away from the resort action. The cottage was clean and simple with a kitchen that was fine for us to prepare simple meals. The outside living areas were comfortable during the day, but chilly during the January evenings and early mornings. We enjoyed going snorkeling at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau which was 20 minutes away and also sea kayaking at Miloli'i Beach. We appreciated all of the effort Nikki put into making our stay comfortable. She was a gracious host and is a lovely person who we hope to meet again. We would recommend PapaLani for those interested in a more eco-friendly way to visit the Big IslandRecommended for: Adventure seekers.

A fresh, close-to-nature place for an out-of-the-ordinary vacation. Fresh air - a large hillside farm, fresh vegetables, fruits straight from the farm, – avocado, macadamia nuts etc. Fresh eggs – seven hens walking around you… The owner is a very helpful person. You get a very detailed instruction to find the place, so even though we arrived in midnight the place was easy to find. An hour drive from the airport. She has a menu for local farm products, massage, and all the information on the island you need. Good access to the national volcano park from the south side of the island. Outdoor shower is really fantastic and its works well. Such a wonderful Eco-cottage!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Due to scheduling conflicts, we stayed first in the Eco cottage and then the main house at Papalani. We adored both! The eco cottage is darling, spotless and cozy. I loved the open air kitchen. Nikki even had some Kona coffee for us! The composting toilet is clean and a real work of art with bamboo siding and beautiful native stone work. Plenty of space for two couples or a family. The grounds of Nikki's place are amazing: Fresh fruit and vegetables right out your front door. We cracked our own Mac nuts, had fresh eggs from the very friendly chickens, papayas and avocados off the trees, organic vegetables and lettuce from the garden. Truly a little bit of Hawaiian heaven! I have already recommended this place to friends. Book early because it fills quickly! If you are looking for an authentic introduction to Hawaiian life, this is the place. Nikki is a delightful, warm, loving and concerned host. She does everything in her power to make your visit with her, and the entire Island, as memorable as possible.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We stayed at three different locations on the island during our stay and this was our hands-down favorite! I even changed our other reservations around to sneak in an extra day here. This cottage is neat and tidy and has everything for simple physical comforts. We loved the outdoor shower especially. The outdoor kitchen is set up with everything you would need to fix your meals. Bed was very comfortable. Nikki, the owner, is accomodating, helpful, and nearby if you need her while also allowing for the cottage to feel quite private too. There are some lovely and uncrowded beaches nearby to explore. Mornings on the lanai with the feathered and furred residents wandering about (chickens, Bubba and Sweet Pea) and the sun filtering through the macnut trees made some precious memories for us to keep with us forever. If you are looking for some true aloha spirit and a peaceful stay, this is the place. I would book the Eco-Cottage again in a heartbeat.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers.

Nikki has done such a nice job with this place. It's really clean, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and well-equipped. It's not a luxury hotel, but personally I'd rather stay here than in a luxury hotel. Beds are comfy, lanai is great, and you can cook up whatever you like in the very pleasant outdoor kitchen. Plus it's nice wandering around the farm and chatting with Nikki (and being able to buy eggs and veggies out of her organic garden). Plus it's close to some great snorkeling!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Aloha I'm Nikki. PapaLani Farm is really Bubba's farm (the big, loveable, handsome black lab in the picture). He was here before i purchased the farm in 2003. He loves people and loves to introduce you to his farm. We also have 2 cats (Sweet Pea and Whitey)and 7 chickens. I have been doing body work since 1990 and have owned and operated spas ever since. If you would like to set up your stay as a retreat/cleanse just let me know in advance and we can make that happen.
Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook:
I purchased this farm because i am interested in creating a sustainable life & peaceful country living. I love to know where my food is coming from and be involved in the process. I like being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the cycles of the moon. The farm is spacious and private and offers endless opportunities.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I enjoy the fruit trees, gardening, herbs, vermiculture, raising chickens, making mulch/compost, creating a beautiful and safe environment for people to explore themselves and their connection with nature.
