The oldest house in McClellanville was actually built on Echaw Plantation, near Jamestown, SC. In 1861, the house was dismantled, and numbered timbers were floated down the Santee River and up Jeremy Creek to its present location where the house was re-assembled. Numbers are still visible on the timbers. The property on which the house sits was purchased by Dr. John Y. DuPre on 20 May, 1861 from Archibald James McClellan for the purchase price of $200.
