Cape May house description
Re-live Cape May's golden age in this ocean-front Victorian 'cottage' built in 1881. If you want to know what summer life was like - for a lucky few, this is the place to be. Ocean views and breezes, high ceilings, massive period furniture, large, airy rooms, an expansive, fully fenced garden, off-street parking for four cars - and much more - make this house truly unique.
Double front porches overlook the ocean in front, and double back porches overlook the garden. There are screened porches on the ground floor, front and rear. The elegant living and dining rooms were made for entertaining. Dine in the antique-furnished dining room, the gazebo in the garden, the screened-in dining porch, or the eat-in kitchen.
There are seven bedrooms, including two master bedroom suites, one on the second floor and the other on the third floor. Both have unobstructed ocean views and ensuite bathrooms.
Two more bedrooms face the ocean, and two more face the garden. There are six full baths on all four floors. There is a second-floor sitting room with a satellite-TV/DVD, and on the third floor there is another satellite-TV with a VCR. There is state of the art kitchen, with a Miele 5-burner cook-top, twin GE Monogram ovens, etc., etc., a large table for those who like to eat in the kitchen, and another table in the adjacent, brand-new family-room/playroom.

Cape May Wedding
Cape May Wedding
How can we ever thank you for renting your beautiful home to us in October. The home was wonderful to entertain family and friends for the week. The room sizes and flexibility for entertaining was a tremendous benefit. It is a perfect location with having an event at Congress Hall. The room settings were magnificent in pictures. Of all the planning and events that we hosted, entertaining in this beautiful home was my favorite part. The kitchen was fully equipped and easy access from the back entrance. The master bedroom was a perfect setting for my daughter to get ready as a bride. One of the treasured pictures we have is my daughter dressed as a bride standing in the open doorway of the balcony looking out to the ocean. The long stairwell is the perfect descent for any bride to make her first appearance that takes your breath away. Thanks again for the opportunity to create treasured family memories in your beautiful home.

Franny's Folly is Fabulous!
Franny's Folly is Fabulous!
We just got back from a week-long vacation at this beautiful home. There were 13 of us and we all had plenty of room for time together and time apart. The house is spectacular and furnished beautifully; there is a true feeling of being somewhere special when staying at Franny's Folly...a beautiful piece of Cape May's history. With plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms, we all were very comfortable. The views from the house and especially the deck are spectacular and offered instant relaxation! You could spend all day on the porch overlooking the ocean, however we did find time to get out and explore Cape May, enjoying dolphin tours, parasailing, and time on the beach. The house is a short walk to the beach and an even shorter walk to shopping in Washington Square. The state of the art kitchen made cooking for a crowd enjoyable and easy. Our kids also enjoyed hanging out in the kitchen for late night card games. This is a great place among very friendly and accommodating locals that I highly recommend. The owner and the property manager are a pleasure to deal with!

The Ultimate Cape May Experience!
The Ultimate Cape May Experience!
“Franny’s Folley” was the perfect rental for our group! We had a wedding across the street at Congress Hall and this was a great alternative to all staying in a hotel for the weekend! The place is impressive- full of Victorian character, yet with all the modern amenities. Excellent location! Close to great attractions and restaurants...with spectacular ocean views! Would definitely recommend Franny’s Folly and hope to return some day!

A Perfect Victorian Rental!
A Perfect Victorian Rental!
We stayed here in late July of 2011. There were 10 of us staying at the house, all adults. We've been coming to Cape May for many years and this year decided we wanted to stay in a larger home that gave us the Victorian Cape May feel. "Franny's Folly" as it is called by the owner is a wonderful home, extremely comfortable and provided our family plenty of room to relax! It is very well equipped for cooking in the commercial size kitchen which had all the amenities necessary to cook at the house. Location was fantastic! The beach is 1 block away, the outside mall was 1 block away, the promenade just 1 block away. Uncle Bill's is across the street so breakfast is no problem, and with several resturants close by you also do not need to worry about walking to dinner either. You can literally park your car and leave it parked for the whole week. Many of us enjoyed the ocean views from the various balconies daily after leaving the beach, including one that is screened in! At night you can hear the ocean from the balconies, and with Congress Hall right next door it provides an enjoyable setting to view while sitting outside as well. The owner was very helpful in describing the home on the day we checked in and provided a local "handyman" in case anything went wrong - nothing went wrong, it was a great week! The home is large enough that a big group can still find private areas to sit and relax, we never felt crowded. I'd say it was one of the best stays we have ever had and being able to stay at a home that has so much history. The pictures on the website are excellent references but the home is actually larger than it looks on the web site, we even enjoyed the Gazebo one evening having cocktails and snacks in their courtyard! A great rental for folks who have a larger group or for two families to share!

Year Purchased: 1942
About the owner: I am in my late 60s. I have loved Franny's Folly since I first started coming here as a babe in arms. It has been our family's gathering place since 1942. We think it is the best house in Cape May.
Why the Owner Chose Cape May:
This has been our family's summer home since World War II, because it was one of the few beach resorts that could be reached by train.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location could not be better. The house sits on the highest point in Cape May, and gets breezes from both the Atlantic and Delaware Bay. There are more than 70 windows and 'french' doors to catch every breeze - plus a three-zone air conditioning system if there is no breeze. In addition to being 100 yards from the surf, we are also 100 yards from the Washington Street pedestrian 'mall', with its shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, grocery store, bakery, etc. Our house was designed by one of America's premier architects, Stephen Decatur Button, who inspired Louis Sullivan, who, in turn, taught Frank Lloyd Wright. We are almost completely surrounded by other fine examples of Victorian architecture - plus, of course - the splendid view of the sea. There is a stand of fine old sycamores behind the house that provides homes to a host of song birds. The house has had, essentially, only two families since it was built. We are lucky to have almost all of the furniture and furnishings that were made for the house. We enjoy parking our car(s) in the driveway in back and just leaving them there. Cape May is ideal for walking and bike riding, and we do a lot of both. In short, we have the best of all worlds- terrific location, a great old house, and all the modern conveniences.
