Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1942
I am in my late 60s. I have loved Franny's Folly since I first started coming here as a babe in arms. It has been our family's gathering place since 1942. We think it is the best house in Cape May.
Why the Owner Chose Cape May
This has been our family's summer home since World War II, because it was one of the few beach resorts that could be reached by train.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The location could not be better. The house sits on the highest point in Cape May, and gets breezes from both the Atlantic and Delaware Bay. There are more than 70 windows and "french" doors to catch every breeze - plus a three-zone air conditioning system if there is no breeze.
In addition to being 100 yards from the surf, we are also 100 yards from the Washington Street pedestrian "mall", with its shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, grocery store, bakery, etc.
Our house was designed by one of America's premier architects, Stephen Decatur Button, who inspired Louis Sullivan, who, in turn, taught Frank Lloyd Wright. We are almost completely surrounded by other fine examples of Victorian architecture - plus, of course - the splendid view of the sea. There is a stand of fine old sycamores behind the house that provides homes to a host of song birds.
The house has had, essentially, only two families since it was built. We are lucky to have almost all of the furniture and furnishings that were made for the house.
We enjoy parking our car(s) in the driveway in back and just leaving them there. Cape May is ideal for walking and bike riding, and we do a lot of both.
In short, we have the best of all worlds- terrific location, a great old house, and all the modern conveniences.

A Perfect Victorian Rental!
Guest: Family Reunion Renter at Franny's Follie
(Massachusetts)

We stayed here in late July of 2011. There were 10 of us staying at the house, all adults. We've been coming to Cape May for many years and this year decided we wanted to stay in a larger home that gave us the Victorian Cape May feel. "Franny's Folly" as it is called by the owner is a wonderful home, extremely comfortable and provided our family plenty of room to relax! It is very well equipped for cooking in the commercial size kitchen which had all the amenities necessary to cook at the house. Location was fantastic! The beach is 1 block away, the outside mall was 1 block away, the promenade just 1 block away. Uncle Bill's is across the street so breakfast is no problem, and with several resturants close by you also do not need to worry about walking to dinner either. You can literally park your car and leave it parked for the whole week. Many of us enjoyed the ocean views from the various balconies daily after leaving the beach, including one that is screened in! At night you can hear the ocean from the balconies, and with Congress Hall right next door it provides an enjoyable setting to view while sitting outside as well. The owner was very helpful in describing the home on the day we checked in and provided a local "handyman" in case anything went wrong - nothing went wrong, it was a great week! The home is large enough that a big group can still find private areas to sit and relax, we never felt crowded. I'd say it was one of the best stays we have ever had and being able to stay at a home that has so much history. The pictures on the website are excellent references but the home is actually larger than it looks on the web site, we even enjoyed the Gazebo one evening having cocktails and snacks in their courtyard! A great rental for folks who have a larger group or for two families to share!
