  • Lovely week

"We were incredibly impressed with Apple Cottage, from the amazing location and lovely ocean view to the pristine condition of the house. Tucked back in a wooded area, but right near the water, it was quiet and peaceful with easy access to a rocky beach area where my son spent a lot of time happily skipping rocks. The house itself was very well-appointed -- virtually nothing was lacking that we needed for the week -- and nicely furnished. (extremely comfortable, not too crowded with things, and perfect size for a family of four.) Granted, we lucked out with great weather, but would have been happy to hang out longer in the house or on the deck. Moreover, Ann H. was very communicative and helpful throughout the process -- from the time we booked it to the myriad of questions I sent her way about places to hike or things to do. (she always responded quickly, and with good humor.) Her binder of suggested activities, restaurants etc. was a great resource. Southwest Harbor is also just a very nice part of the island, and easily accessible to many lovely walks and restaurants. We cannot wait to come back!"

  • Great location!

"We flew in from Texas and Florida to Boston and drove up to Maine to celebrate our mother's 73rd birthday. The drive up was very easy and worth the savings in the flight price. We rented from Budget Car Rental, which is not our usual place, but the coupon was too good to pass up. The line was 1 1/2 hours - not fun. But we were very happy with the SUV we got. It was very comfortable and got good gas mileage. We stopped in Newburyport for lunch, as a family member recommended we stop there. We were so glad they did, we loved this small town. Lunch was great. This was our first visit to Maine and we had an amazing time. The house was as listed/described. The owner was wonderful to work with. The house was spotless when we arrived and perfect for our group of 8 people. While we were there our kids fished off the dock across the street most every night, we hiked many times in Acadia National Park (a national treasure), visited Bar Harbor, and enjoyed the amazing restaurants. We were happy to be in Southwest Harbor instead of Bar Harbor for a little more quiet stay. The view off of the deck is beautiful and relaxing. We spent a lot of time on the deck catching up. We also had fun playing the family games they had, indoor and outdoor. The kitchen was well stocked to cook with and the grocery stores are great. This is the second house we have rented through VRBO. The first one was in Carmel, CA, and it was perfect. We were there in March 2013. The weather in March was lovely as was the weather in Maine. Sunny every day. Thank you for sharing this house! Mom's birthday was a special one."

  • Adventure to remember

"What a week! The house is located just 13 minutes by car to Bar Harbor, 10 minutes by car to the entrance to Acadia National Park. If you choose to take the bus, the pick up spot is only a short walk away from this roomy, clean, comfortable home. We really liked the home and area! Just down the road from the cape house was a great spot to kayak. We did not bring ours but wish we had. I forgot the name of the harbor / bay area but a fantastic spot for that. There were 5 adults (4 woman and 1 fella) and one small dog that embarked upon this adventure and we never felt cramped in this home. LOVE IT. Hope to go back next year! Thank you for renting us the great home. Its a keeper! Can't say enough about the beauty. If visiting, do yourself a favor and pick up an Acadia Weekly magazine... its free and you can get one at any info center. Its very informative on driving around, the bus routes and has some great activity ideas. We used it every day and because of the magazine we hiked Acadia Mountain, it was AWESOME! I hope all enjoy as much as we did."

  • Close to Nirvana

"It would be difficult to find a better spot for spending a vacation than the Quietside of Mt. Desert, and the Gray Barn experience is part of the fun. The accomodations are modern and in great shape, and the windows both have a great view over upper Bass Harbor and give great air circulation. Access to cellphone and internet coverage is a convenience. The kitchen is very functional, though you'll want to visit the lobster pounds and restaurants in the area. A perfect base for hiking in Acadia National Park. The week we were there was perfect for using the owner's kayaks in the upper harbor and the estuary beyond. We've stayed three different years and will be happy to return."
