Bal Cottage lies on the edge of the Penwith Moors in West Cornwall
Created by combining 2 former miners cottages, adjacent to the once famous Ding Dong Mines, now a World Industrial Heritage Site, Bal Cottage provides a unique base from which to explore the many places of interest and entertainment on the Land's End peninsular and nearby. Signs of the area's industrial past are long gone except for the striking ruined engine houses once used to power the mines, which dug for Copper, Tin and Lead. The location is 700' above sea level, almost the highest point on the Land's End, and overlooks acres of moorland on three sides, with the whole of Mount's Bay to the South, including the picturesque St Michael's Mount, distant Lizard Peninsula and a horizon some 30 miles away. Bal Cottage now forms part of an original row of 4 cottages on Bal Row, (Bal is Cornish for Mine). The owners live next door and are always available for advice or assistance if requested. The cottages are approached by a short track from the nearest lane and are therefore free from passing traffic or other disturbances. It is possible to walk for many miles straight out of the door or make an easy car journey to St Ives, 9 miles, Penzance, 4 miles, Land's End, 15 miles, Porthcurno, 15 miles and Marazion/St Michael's Mount, 8 miles.

We all enjoyed our break in the wilds of West Cornwall. The hosts live next door but we hardly noticed them, the only sounds were birds singing. Jenny was happy to help in any way she could, including lending us large towels as I had forgotten to pack mine.
All 3 generations of my family were happy with the cottage and enjoyed the break.

Cosy secluded Heide-away in rough but grand landscape
Nicely restored old cottage "at the end of the world" with beautiful view of Mount St Michael in the distance; wonderful, friendly, environmentally conscious and helpful hosts, couldn't have been any nicer; comfortable beds, cosy living room upstairs, somewhat slow shower. The location is a bit exposed to winds, but I personally like that and all windows were tight.
Nice walking opportunities, everything else accessible with a 15-25 min drive, be it shopping locations, restaurants, stone-age structures, beaches or absolutely beautiful coastline and cliffs.
Thank you so much, Jenny and Douglas!
Rustic cottage in remote location with wonderful views
Overall we enjoyed our stay - the surroundings of the cottage are beautiful and we enjoyed some long walks in the local area. Even though the next town is only a couple of miles away, it's quite a trip due to the overall conditions of the roads. The cottage is lovely but very rustic and somewhat dated.
Really charming cottage and beautifully located on the remote Penwith Moors. The drive up the extremely narrow roads are worth it for fabulous views across the Moors, punctuated by the mining ruins and a stunning vista over Mounts Bay. Really cosy property and it was almost a shame not to have had colder weather so we could have enjoyed the wood-burner! Fabulous, accommodating, friendly and helpful hosts. We'll look to return again!
Renting this property was an amazing experience for me. Contact with the owner is nice and easy. We have to change the date of our booking and Jenny was so helpful during that process. The cottage was clean and tidy, full of necessary equipment. Check in and out process was super easy. The owners ate friendly and helpful all the time. Strongly recommend this place😀

Fabulous location on the moor- perfect for walking and cycling around the peninsular. The house was comfortable and it was refreshing to have eco friendly products to use.

Thank you Sally and thank you also for taking good care of Bal Cottage during your stay. You have captured exactly our raison d'être: to share a comfortable and homely space with those who also share our love of our environment, locally and further afield.
It's all about the location - an amazing spot on the moors of West Penwith. Cute miners cottages with stunning views from large upstairs living room. Only downside was bedrooms being a bit small and a touch damp.

Thank you Jamie, and thank you also for your appreciative comments in our visitors' book. Location and environment is central to our offering. When we built up the cottage from a ruin, we made a decision to locate the bedrooms downstairs and keep them small in order to create a light and spacious living area upstairs. As they were always intended as guest bedrooms, we thought they did not need to be very big. We must make that clearer in our description.
The photos and description do not do this place justice. The cottage is very spacious with complete cooking facilities, spectacular views, and charming furnishings and decoration. The location is where the magic lies. The surrounding moor is beautiful, mysterious, potentially deadly...everything a moor ought to be! There is at least 3 days worth of great walking straight from your doorstep, and many great SW Coast Path sections are within driving distance. A piece of advice if you dislike driving on the tiny lanes: by going into Penzance (~15 minutes by car) you can access the First Bus network which gives you buses at least every hour to all the walking places. Ding Dong makes an excellent base for exploring everything from St. Ives to Marazion.
