Great family holiday in San Gimignano

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Alessandro's villa for 2 weeks in July. It was a great holiday and one we will all remember. We are a family of 9, with older children and friends using the villa as a base. Alessandro was a most welcoming host, provided everything we needed, answered all our questions and offered suggestions on places to visit, etc.

The Villa has 4 great en-suite double bedrooms, with an additional bedroom area with a bed (part of one of the double rooms) - Excellent.

The private pool was a major highlight for all! Great size.

The meal provided by a local cook at the villa was very good.

Given its location, San Gimignano is excellently situated for drives to several cultural cities and towns. Of course, San Gimignano is great itself. Only drawback (particularly for elderly or babies/prams) is that the 1km walk from the villa to San Gimignano is up a steep, rough track - we ended up taking the car on a few occasions, and negotiating San Gimignano's busy car parks - not ideal. This is the only reason I provided 4 stars instead of 5 - which might be a bit harsh. Of course this shouldn't detract from Alessandro's hospitality or the magnificent villa with pool, and fabulous location.

For the older children, exploring wider parts of Italy, the location was great - trains from Poggibonsi were frequent.

Thanks Alessandro...

Amazing property with great views of San Gimignano

  • 5 of 5

Firstly can I say how helpful Alessandro was with helping us book this villa and also with meeting up and suggesting tours and excursions. He really makes the villa what it is!

The villa itself is very well located on a small road about 5/10 mins walk from SG centre. It's easy to pop up to the Co-Op for supplies.

The pool is lovely and sheltered. Witha couple of trees down you'd also extend the great view of SG.

All the rooms have great beds and en-suites. The whole villa is clean and full of all the cooking utensils you need. There's even a cat about (we called him Craig) who lives out the back along with the foxes (who seemed to like eating sandals!)

The seating area has a great little BBQ and a fantastic view of SG. Again, with the removal of a hedge or two you could have a truly panoramic view of the area.

A quick tip, the bins are dropped off at the end of the track after turning left and driving a couple of minutes to the main road.

Quick and reliable WiFi too!

Overall a fantastic Villa, in my memories forever! Thanks so much for all your help Alessandro! Ciao!

Charming quiet house with a fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic charming Tuscany house with plenty of room for 8 persons and the best view to San Gimignano. Combining a quiet rural location and own private pool with walking distance to San Gimignano and short distance to shopping and sightseeing opportunities. All needed facilities and a very friendly and helpsome host.

Spectacular View!

  • 5 of 5

This house is a great home base for exploring Tuscany. Very comfortable and there are 4 large bedrooms with private bathrooms. We were 4 couples traveling together and we never felt crowded. We walked up into San Gimignano many times and there is a great winery just a short walk in the opposite direction that also has a good view. Above all, I can't say enough great things about Alessandro. He really went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable.

We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay immensely at Villa Porticcola! We were amazed at the view of San Gimignano, especially at night! The home is located down a quiet country road, and the driveway is lined with olive trees. Yet, the home is only walking distance from San Gimignano! The house is well represented by the pictures. Yet, when you arrive you are completely in awe of the surrounding views!

Alessandro was so kind, and made us feel very welcome! He sat with us and gave us suggestions for visiting the surrounding area. We followed his suggestions, and found that we had a wonderful vacation experience. I would recommend this rental to anyone! It is what you dream of as a romantic Tuscan experience! Pam & Terry

San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village of the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the 'Via Francigena' the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it. Such prosperity lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. In 1199 it became a free municipality and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Due to internal power struggles it eventually divided into two factions one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines). On the 8th May 1300 Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. In 1348 San Gimignano's population was drastically reduced by the Black Death Plague throwing the city into a serious crisis which eventually led to its submission to Florence in 1353. In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries. The architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Sienese School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.
