Under the Tuscan Sun
Alessandro was an excellent host. He was extremely easy to communicate with before and during our visit. The villa was a perfect place for our group of four couples with ample space within and out to congregate or be on your own. We had perfect weather that allowed us to spend lots of time outdoors. The view is to die for. Every morning we woke up to the view of the towers of San Gimingano. It is in a perfect location close enough to walk to town and the co-op. Alessandro’s suggestions for restaurants, places to visit and tour guide Dr. Bruno were top notch. Highly recommended for a magical visit.
Great location, perfect place for group of friends or family
We stayed here for 3 nights in October, the place is very close to San Gimignano with a stunning view of rolling hills of vineyard and San Gimignano towers. It's large enough to accommodate 4 couples (although we have only 3) with each having their own private bath. The house is very clean, in a good condition, and has everything you need to feel at home. The owner, Alessandro, is very informative, took time to go over the place, gave us lots of tips of the area, and even arranged a home cook dinner by a local for us, which was relaxing and with lots of fun.
We thoroughly enjoyed the house and will definite come back again.
This is an amazing property with views in all directions. Just a short walk of 10 minutes up the road to town, cafes, bakery and the grocery store. There is outdoor dining in two areas to enjoy the views, as well as an indoor dining table. The owner Alessandro was prompt, responsive and helpful with any needs. He arranged a private cook to prepare a wonderful Tuscan meal for our last night, and a naturalist to take us to a nature preserve and ruins. This property is historic with a colorful history including being a former jail! The kitchen has everything you will need to prepare meals if you choose to. There were 6 of us, feeling there was plenty of room with the 4 bedrooms dm 5 bathrooms. I highly recommend this property. I doubt you will find another villa so close to town, within walking distance, and the views!! We would definately stay here again, would not consider staying anywhere else.
Fabulous villa and host!!
My husband and I stayed in this villa for a week in September with 6 friends and we couldn't have been happier! The booking process went very smoothly from start to finish. Alessandro (the owner) was very helpful during the booking process and answered all my emails very promptly. The villa had plenty of room for everyone and it was very clean. Kitchen quite well equipped for a vacation villa. Alessandro was a perfect host and offered several suggestions for things to do, restaurants to go to, places to see and even arranged for a lady to come in and make us a 4 course meal! (I highly recommend this - she was fabulous!) Our only regret is that we didn't have more time to stay! If we ever have the good fortune to return to San Gimignano I dearly hope this villa will be available! Loved, loved, loved it!! Thank you so much for your gracious hospitality Alessandro.
Great family holiday in San Gimignano
We stayed at Alessandro's villa for 2 weeks in July. It was a great holiday and one we will all remember. We are a family of 9, with older children and friends using the villa as a base. Alessandro was a most welcoming host, provided everything we needed, answered all our questions and offered suggestions on places to visit, etc.
The Villa has 4 great en-suite double bedrooms, with an additional bedroom area with a bed (part of one of the double rooms) - Excellent.
The private pool was a major highlight for all! Great size.
The meal provided by a local cook at the villa was very good.
Given its location, San Gimignano is excellently situated for drives to several cultural cities and towns. Of course, San Gimignano is great itself. Only drawback (particularly for elderly or babies/prams) is that the 1km walk from the villa to San Gimignano is up a steep, rough track - we ended up taking the car on a few occasions, and negotiating San Gimignano's busy car parks - not ideal. This is the only reason I provided 4 stars instead of 5 - which might be a bit harsh. Of course this shouldn't detract from Alessandro's hospitality or the magnificent villa with pool, and fabulous location.
For the older children, exploring wider parts of Italy, the location was great - trains from Poggibonsi were frequent.
Beautiful villa!! Highly recommended. The views are outstanding.
San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village of the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the 'Via Francigena' the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it. Such prosperity lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. In 1199 it became a free municipality and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Due to internal power struggles it eventually divided into two factions one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines). On the 8th May 1300 Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. In 1348 San Gimignano's population was drastically reduced by the Black Death Plague throwing the city into a serious crisis which eventually led to its submission to Florence in 1353. In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries. The architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Sienese School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.
