Relax at the Rose ....
'There is something ineffably serene about this house. It is a visual version of a Vivaldi Concerto or Handel’s Water Music. I sit and absorb the soothing impact of pale walls against honeyed woodwork, the abundance of flowing space and the unusual sense of tranquility that one feels here. My eye delights in the detail of the solid mantel-pieces that rest above the eight fireplaces, the perfectly chosen artwork that is redolent of a long-ago, somehow simpler, time and the light…always the glorious abundance of light that fills the house.' ...St Marys Magazine
A 1907 Historic Home located in the heart of the historic district of St. Marys, Ga. A traditional 'foursquare' design, and one of the first homes in the area constructed of an unusual type of block (known as granitoid, rarely seen in South Georgia).
The home has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a formal dining room and comfortable living room. While the home has been modernized (central heating and air conditioning, modern kitchen, and more), one can still appreciate the original details of hardwood floors, large windows, dramatically high ceilings and two large porches - all surrounded by a half acre of camellias, azaleas, roses, magnolia, oak, camphor, cedar and persimmon trees, scuppernong grapes and a variety of other lush plantings.
Saint Marys ....
For those of you who are not familiar with St. Marys, allow me to acquaint you with this wonderful small town. Located on the banks of the St. Marys River, the town is the second oldest in the U.S, following St. Augustine, Florida. It is in the Southeast-most corner of Georgia, nestled just west of Cumberland Island and east of Highway I-95. Jacksonville International Airport is only 30 minutes away. It is centrally located between Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach and Jekyll Island/St. Simon's Island/Sea Island. Once in St. Marys however, it feels a world away. Everyone greets you with a smile, and strangers wave hello. St. Marys was named The Best Small Town in America by Money Magazine, and is the site of the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. It was also recently highlighted in Southern Living Magazine.
The town is small and quiet with moss draped oaks and a charming atmosphere. The house is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. Bikes and golf carts are available to rent. A kayak outfitter offers a variety of trips for all levels of experience. Or try your hand at fishing from the pier or in the river and tidal area. The Rose-Lovell House is just two blocks from the Cumberland Island Ferry and public boat ramp. It is a 45-minute ferry ride to what the Travel Channel has ordained as 'America’s Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach'. Stroll the trails and beaches and catch a glimpse of wild horses, dolphins, white tailed deer, armadillos, wild turkeys and a variety of other birds.
Stop in to the St. Marys Visitor's Center for information regarding activites, restaurants and local history. Meet at the flagpole on the waterfront to join the historic tram tour.
Head 45 minutes west to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Take the guided boat tour and learn about the swamp inhabitants and its fragile ecosystem, or rent a canoe or kayak and see some of the wildlife up close.

A large home with a convenient floorplan
This property was a wonderful fit for our group. The floorplan is set up in a way that encourages socialization. The double porches were wonderful in the evenings. I would choose this property again for a reunion, quilt retreat, or girls weekend. The owner is responsive and the home is well curated.
Awesome Historic Home
We are a small group of lady friends that enjoy fun, nature, and educational trips. All of us had an awesome first-time visit to Saint Marys, GA. We loved the historic Rose-Lovell Home within the historic distinct. It is walking distance to the water-front, restaurants, shops, parks, and museums. The Rose-Lovell is beautiful, well-appointed, spacious, clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on one of the two front porches after a long day of adventure. We suggest to anyone visiting Saint Marys to take the one-hour trolly (golf cart) tour of the historic district. And by all means visit Cumberland Island and take the Lands & Legacies van tour to the north end. Looking forward to my next visit and another stay at the Rose-Lovell house. Thank you, Beth, for graciously helping me with all our arrangements and having us at your lovely house.
Thank you, Marsha, for your kind words and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Please come back to visit St Marys and we welcome you back anytime to the Rose Lovell House!
We loved everything about it
We were a group of10. We enjoyed the stay of two nights there at the fullest. The house was simply amazing and the amenities were more than perfect. Great choice. The owner was prompt in replying the messages. Great great option
Thank you, Sougata, for your kind remarks and we are so happy you enjoyed your stay. We hope you will come back and stay again in the Rose Lovell House when you return to St Marys!
This house is lovely. Great accommodation for our group and great location in St Marys to walk to Cumberland Island ferry and good dinner spots. Very quiet pleasant property.
We are so happy you enjoyed your stay! Please come again and stay when you visit St Marys! You are always welcome.
Such a beautiful historic home!!
This home has all the conveniences you need in the setting of a beautiful historic home! Just two blocks from the waterfront with access to the Cumberland island ferry. Very walkable area and so peaceful
Thank you, Dede! We are so glad you and your family enjoyed your stay at the Rose Lovell House. We hope you will choose to return and stay again when you visit St Marys in the future. And.... congratulations on your wedding success!
Fantastic house in a great location
We stayed in St. Mary's to use it mainly as a base to see Cumberland Island. The house easily hosted our 5 adults and 4 kids (but could have fit a couple more adults or children). It was the perfect size to be cozy but also allow some privacy when needed! The high ceilings, woodwork and historical touches made it such a pleasure to be there. Beds were comfortable, good pillows and towels. Access was from a punch cod on the door and it really took the headache away from keeping track of keys.
It was so great to be able to walk to everywhere we needed on quiet, lovely streets. Very easy to get to Cumberland Island also. There was a lot to see in St. Mary's. Truly a charming small town. Don't miss the country store down by the river front (ice cream, fudge, souvenirs and packed lunches!), the many historical sites or a walk in the park at sunset!
Many thanks, Diana, for sharing the fun time you had in St Marys. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. We welcome you back anytime in the future and hope you will chose to stay at the Rose Lovell house, again!
