Amaryllis House: Natural Paradise at Caribbean Oceanview Retreat

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 1 loft bedroom + daybeds, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-6)

Originally built as a private artist's atelier in 1994, Amaryllis House is a secluded, idyllic retreat, a place to completely relax, in nature and away from the pressures of urban life.

Built entirely of wood in a traditional tropical style, the house features a high-ceilinged great room with skylight. Verandah doors fold back to create a panoramic view of meadows, forested lands, sea and cliffs. This is a natural living: there is no air conditioning, and you sleep under mosquito nets. Here, you experience from the house the unspoiled beauty of the island, and at the same time get a taste of local village life. Amaryllis House is perfect for the guest wanting to get off the beaten track. And because it is a self-contained cottage rather than a resort, our rates remain affordable.

The house is situated on the Atlantic coast 40 minutes from Grenada's capital St. George's, and 20 minutes south of the second largest town, Grenville, near the village of Crochu.

A bakery, a small grocery store, and night-time street-side BBQ is a short drive away, as is the Cabier Ocean Lodge, which offers restaurant-style meals with notice. Grenadians are among the Caribbean's most welcoming, friendly, helpful and hospitable people and will afford you the friendship and courtesies you show them.

At Amaryllis House, a sleeping loft with a double bed, two daybeds in the great room, and a bed on the verandah sleep six in total (but somewhat tightly), with a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with shower. Take breakfast on the verandah, while watching birds including tiny iridescent humming birds at certain times of year. Fall asleep lulled by the sound of the sea lapping the beach, and awaken to cooling sea breezes, or enjoy a view of the ocean in the loft with champagne-like light dappling through the trees. For the adventurous, come in rainy season (June-September), when daily downpours mean that everything is growing and the mangoes are in season (and insects more plentiful!)

A footpath leads you through a meadow to Mahot Beach, used by local fishermen. One of the most beautiful beaches for safe swimming on the island, Cabier Beach, is a 15 minute walk away. The property features a grove of tropical shrubs and fruit trees: calabash, soursop, papayas, bananas, cinnamon, a variety of mangoes, sapodillas, cashew, and coconut trees, as well as bougainvillea, heliconia, crotons, lemon grass, oleanders, and ixoras.

We are happy to arrange airport transfer, and car rental. Although a car is not necessary -- taxis are available and buses run frequently from the main intersection -- a car will definitely facilitate a fuller appreciation of the island.

About Deborah Root

I live in beautiful Ontario, Canada and try to visit Grenada as often as possible. I love the very different plant and animal life here and the Caribbean. I love the lushness of Grenada, and I especially love mangoes!

Deborah Root purchased this house in 2006

Why Deborah Root chose Grenada

I've traveled a great deal, and I like most places I visit, but right away I knew Grenada was special. I saw Amaryllis House while on a nature walk and contacted the owner. We became friends, and when the time was right, she sold it to me. I've been very happy there.

What makes this house unique

Canada has a long tradition of going to summer cottages on northern lakes. I like the relaxed, low-tech experience of the natural world. Amaryllis House offers the same cottage feeling, except it is in the tropics. I love the sounds and scents...and I don't mind the bugs!

Beautiful Seclusion

  • 5 of 5

Amazingly idyllic spot in a remote part of Grenada. The house itself is gorgeous, and is a real opportunity to go off grid during your stay (there is wifi, so no need to go full Hemmingway). Difficult to navigate without a car, but the facilities are super charming (outdoor shower = 10/10) and Collins, the facilities manager, is supremely helpful.

quiet, secluded and natural

  • 5 of 5

My family, including two toddlers, stayed at Amaryllis house for 6 weeks this year. It was fantastic and truly worth a return. You are surrounded by nature, fruit trees and the sound of the rolling ocean. The ocean breeze keeps the house cool and gardens make for an excellent place to kick up your feet and relax. Hammocks, daybeds and chairs are plenty on the large outdoor deck with many doors to bring the outside in. The home is all wood giving it warmth. The outside shower is a favourite. While the closest beach is more for fishing the cove next door, an easy walk, is lovely to spend the day swimming, castle creating and frolicking in the ocean. Buses are easy to catch, 800 m hike to the main road, which can take you to any of the many beautiful beaches Grenada has to offer. There is a huge bbq which we used frequently. Having an onsite manager was helpful, quickly addressing any of our issues.

If you are looking for a natural retreat where you will feel comfortable and relaxed I strongly recommend Amaryllis house. A great place to stay put, or rent a car/take a bus and use the house as a home base to explore the island.

Remote, private & relaxing spot

  • 4 of 5

I loved staying here, and would return. It's comfortable and spacious. However:

- The photos are dated. It's more weatherbeaten and worn now. (This did not detract from our enjoyment of the place.)

- If you're looking for a good, nearby beach, this is not the place for you. There is a beach just down the path, but not particularly appealing. To get to good beaches, shops or restaurants, you need a car.

This property is on the more remote, windward side of Grenada.

(Again, not a problem for us, we enjoyed the wind and the rain in the greenery.)

- If you are nervous about bats (or mosquitos), this is also not the place for you.

- The path down from the road to the house is quite long and steep.

- The caretaker is great, helpful, friendly - he takes great care of the place and the gardens. (Not an easy job, I'm sure.)

This is a hideaway in the country. Great for writing, reading, hanging out.

Definitely take Deborah up on her offer to have someone meet you on arrival - I can't imagine anyone finding this house on their own!

That being said, it became one of our favorite places to stay in the Caribbean. The moonlight through the loft windows, the lizards in the outdoor shower - excellent.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review! The photos are 2 years old, and I think your comment well illustrates the effect of weather in the tropics. We call it the "sea blast". Metal corrodes in 6 months... One of the most beautiful beaches in Grenada is a 10 minute walk away, so its not absolutely necessary to drive! You're so right about the beach in front of the house, though--the fishermen use it and there is a small hole in the reef, which lets in flotsam , etc. The house really is a hideaway. I'm a writer myself, and I go there to think and be in nature. It's like going to a cottage in the woods here in Canada, except it's in the tropics, with mangoes and papaya.

beautiful, safe and close to nature

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family of four stayed at Amaryllis House for two weeks over Christmas and New Years, and we had a wonderful time. The house is a special place, beautiful and well kept, perfect if you love nature and want to be in a thoughtfully designed place, and we spent many very enjoyable hours out on the porch enjoying the view. I really liked the location, its rural and in the less touristy part of the island, which i find more interesting but there are nice beaches close and the island is also not that big, so you can get anywhere you want. As I said the house is very well kept, and there is a great guy who lives a stonethrow away, who is the ground keeper and is able to help when there are any issues (such as needing to open the coconuts from the garden and lacking a machete :-), also adding to the place feeling very safe, even though its secluded. Deborah, the extremely helpful owner, arranged for a super nice and extremely helpful driver who picked us up at the airport, i recommend doing that. All around I really think we could not have chosen a better house on this fantastic island and if you consider going to Grenada for your vacation i highly recommend Amaryllis House.
